I'd say empowering them to be independent enough to take public transit at a young age is setting them up on a path of responsibility. We just returned from a trip to Asia and kids as young as 6 and 7 were independently taking public transit to and from school. Age doesn't make someone responsible and just because something is a "rule" doesn't mean it should be blindly obeyed and never questioned. That's how societies end up in trouble.You can't continue to complain about kids not having a sense of responsibility with the ever present "kids these days" attitude while simultaneously cutting them off at the knees when they're empowered to do so.
