4 over is an outright cash grab in my mind, meaning for me the safety aspect of the cameras is a secondary benefit, not the primary benefit. I cannot read the pictured tickets to see if any were issued for speeds close to 4 over. It would also be nice to know what they are charging per km over the limit, and I would suspect the grace speed is also reflected in the speed charged. I was under the impression that speed camera tickets were supposed to show the captured speed in the picture, something I also cannot see in the pictured tickets. If the school lights ARE NOT flashing, the charged speed should be calculated from the normal speed limit. Can the cameras tell the difference? I’d love to know the accident rates in these locations, as I am unaware of these being (speed) accident prone areas. As for not being aware, the cameras were well publicized. X-copper etc are going to have a field day! That said, too many vehicles speed far too often.
It would be really nice to see some reasonably priced Via Rail trips across Canada. Unless you want to sleep in your seat, most seem to cost a King’s ransom.
One smack of the lash would certainly correct a lot of this bad behaviour. I know I would have gotten it at home from my father if I had run afoul if the law; or perhaps parliament needs to add it to what the courts can hand out ……a year in jail or one smack of “the cat o’ 9 tails”. Let the bad guy elect to receive it. Right now criminals are laughing at court releases and sentences. We need Judge Mongomery back ….
I don’t think you are struggling to get by, if you have 2+ dogs or cats; nor if you smoke or drink. Can’t make my mind up if an EXPENSIVE cell phone package is a necessity of life. And yes, I know that cats, smoking, drinking and expensive cell packages were not in the story.
@What: It is our athletes, politicians with golden pensions and numerous of our CEOs and actors that are overpaid, NOT the police. When was the last time you were held at gunpoint, rushed towards a firearm call or picked up the body of a lifeless child, beloved spouse or anything close to that. Not to include all the carnage they see within our homes and on highways. The PTSD that many officers live with and the sleepless nights endured due to working, being called back to work or getting no days off due to court appearances. Let’s not forget the alimony payments when an officer’s family falls apart because they are never there 4 important dates or Christmas, a birthday an anniversary etc. Walk a foot in their shoes and you will soon realize you/they are well underpaid. Just looking at our Memorial Bridges should make you cringe; but does it? Add more radar trials, interactions, cell pics & SIU and who wud want to be an officer? Maybe you wud want the “overpaid/overstaffed” job!
Children should not have to suffer that kind of pain. I’m glad Dallas’s medical condition seems to be on its way to recovery, and that a full recovery is in sight. Sick Kid’s Hospital saved my life when I was an infant. They can work miracles. Kudos also to the OSMH Pediatrics Unit & the member that initially diagnosed the malady as G-B Syndrome. Good job by all!
You have more police in town than you can shake a tail at. OPP are here as part of 3 officer, count them 3 offices, General HQ, Regional HQ & Deatacment. They come here for training by the car load, officers are always passing through to pick up a new police cruiser, the OPP helicopter unit is here, the TRU team is here. there are upteen other OPP units in Orillia. You will never get that kind of policing with your own police force. On top of this you have the same amount of officers, or more, policing the town, plus officers from 3 other townships that can attend as back up. Sorry, strongly disagree with you. Additionally, the number of OPP officers stationed here, or travelling through here, spend an enormous amount of money which greatly increases your economy. SMH.
I understand the circumstances that caused Mr, Damery to think outside the box & create a cozy home for his father-in-law in the bush. Hopefully doing this will not interfere with the rights and safety of other persons who may live in close proximity to this cabin, or cause harm to is father-in-law (I’m mainly thinking of the furnace causing a fire). Methinks government needs to sit down and think out a policy that is satisfactory to society & to people that have absolutely no place to go or turn to. Perhaps it is time to rethink the policy of shutting down all the Regional Health Centres such as The Muskoka Centre in Gravenhurst & Orillia’s Huronia Regional Centre, replacing them with smaller centres, more strictly controlled, focusing on the needs of people like Mr. Damery’s father-in-law who seems to have (almost fatally) slipped between the cracks at all levels of government. Any & all ideas leading to a solution should be evaluated with bipartisan politics a necessity.
I guess this would be called fighting city hall. If there was a 1960s bylaw assuming the road, I would fight Ramara in court, telling Ramara up front that you will be seeking “all” costs shud you win. If there was a lawyer who handled the purchase of the land is still around, ask him if the road was assumed or unassumed. I assume that is one of his responsibilities at the time of the transaction. At the very least Ramara shud have warned you and your lawyer that the road was not assumed and had you sign an acknowledgement. I have built 2 homes in separate municipalities and both times the municipality was less than forthcoming with inspections or communications. Are you able to establish if Ramara has been taxing you for year round road maintenance?
Perhaps charging all the bicycle and electric scooters for their wrong doings could be the city’s new cash cow. Heaven knows there are enough violations by them to make the cash cow moo. The city is sure making Orwell’s 1984 applicable to the 2020s.
I had a severe heart issue a couple of weeks ago. An ambulance was requested for me and arrived within 10 minutes or so, and I live out in the sticks, not in town. The ambulance attendants were professional & thorough. I have nothing but praise for the way my situation was handled, from A to Z; so much so that I wrote an e-mail of commendation to the ambulance service. I have to agree with everything MG920’ said. Having said that, I am very sorry you had to experience the amount of pain you did & I am glad that everything worked out for you.
The very easiest, least stressful way to get to Toronto General is with the Go Train & you can park free for up to 48 hours at your departure Go Station, Allandale Waterfront in Barrie. With a Go Train Presto Pass you can do the trip for less than the cost of parking in Toronto & if you are a senior the round trip price, including TTC Subway which is free with a Go Train trip, is <$15. I know, because I do it often. Take Allandale Waterfront Go to Downsview Park (cheaper than going to Union Station). Take the Subway from Downsview Pk to Queens Park Stn, then take the s/w exit from QP Stn and U are almost at TGH which is slightly to the south when you exit. No subway costs, no traffic/parking hassles, relaxing and if you plan to use the train only (no Go busses) the total one way trip takes about 2 hours.Believe me, it is well worth it, monetarily, mentally and time wise! Check the direct train trips on Go Transit site. The Presto pass is free and can be obtained at any Shoppers D.M.
We all have to live within our means. Once an urban jurisdiction has laid out its boundaries, it should have to abide by them. No municipality should be allowed or required to poach from a township land it does not already own. There is a reason people move out to a township, and one of those reasons IS NOT to be sucked back into an urban setting. It is just plain wrong for the urban centres or Doug Ford to expect that municipalities can go poaching for land into adjacent townships, robbing the townships of their best land and tax bases. I feel for those people who have been poached into a municipality against their will. The poaching municipality should have to re-settle those people at fair market price.
I have to think that smaller busses might accommodate most, if not all, of the Orillia routes and that smaller busses would be more economical in price, and on fuel, parts, & repairs and be less vulnerable to having collisions. Every time I see a bus go by I do a head count with the numbers being mostly far less than 10 riders, often between 0 & 5. These numbers have been consistent throughout the years; big busses driving mostly empty. So, why the need for the current big city behemoths spewing a lot of fuel fumes when smaller might be better and more economical?
@GMetz Practically everyone goes to Canadian Tire, and now there is a Shoppers Drug Mart, to go along with Dollarama, Sports Chek & Mark’s. Sorry, but I disagree with you. Severn people buy big ticket items like cars, trucks, swimming pools etc in the city. What is wrong with some city people shopping for some things in the township? Sad that you don’t want to share the wealth! I guess you don’t go to CTC.
