Put Champlain back up on his pedestal. We would not be having this conversation had he never been removed. As for the 5 surrounding figures, negotiate a fair resolution with Rama First Nations, including donating them to RFN.if they wish to have them. This way hopefully everyone gets something out of this and also concedes something. If we cannot resolve this issue at this level, how do we ever expect the world to settle any of the animosity we currently see festering between nations?
It won’t change if people don’t speak out. The highways 17 & 11 are dangerous! The highways are killers! Just around Christmas 2 sets of 3 were killed in separate collisions during bad weather. Too many semis and not enough passing areas are available. 4 lane what can be done Doug, then get the areas needing more intricate infrastructure such as bridges done. Your FORD nation is counting on you for their family’s safety. Git’er done!
4 over is an outright cash grab in my mind, meaning for me the safety aspect of the cameras is a secondary benefit, not the primary benefit. I cannot read the pictured tickets to see if any were issued for speeds close to 4 over. It would also be nice to know what they are charging per km over the limit, and I would suspect the grace speed is also reflected in the speed charged. I was under the impression that speed camera tickets were supposed to show the captured speed in the picture, something I also cannot see in the pictured tickets. If the school lights ARE NOT flashing, the charged speed should be calculated from the normal speed limit. Can the cameras tell the difference? I’d love to know the accident rates in these locations, as I am unaware of these being (speed) accident prone areas. As for not being aware, the cameras were well publicized. X-copper etc are going to have a field day! That said, too many vehicles speed far too often.
A 4 way stop with oversized signs, advanced warning signs and with an overhead 4 way red flashing light would be more than sufficient; as well as significantly cheaper.
It would be really nice to see some reasonably priced Via Rail trips across Canada. Unless you want to sleep in your seat, most seem to cost a King’s ransom.
One smack of the lash would certainly correct a lot of this bad behaviour. I know I would have gotten it at home from my father if I had run afoul if the law; or perhaps parliament needs to add it to what the courts can hand out ……a year in jail or one smack of “the cat o’ 9 tails”. Let the bad guy elect to receive it. Right now criminals are laughing at court releases and sentences. We need Judge Mongomery back ….
I agree with most of your points, save for helping to finance Ukraines defence. If the battlefield was not Ukraine at the moment, I have a great fear it would be Greenland or Canada next. Unless you want to live under King Putin or King Trump, I would suggest you take a second look at your thoughts on the Ukraine war. I think it is the only thing keeping the bear to the north of us, or the psychopath to the south, from considering a grab for our minerals, oil and gas. Kudos to The Ukraine. Financing them is a much better choice than Canada being the front line.
I don’t think you are struggling to get by, if you have 2+ dogs or cats; nor if you smoke or drink. Can’t make my mind up if an EXPENSIVE cell phone package is a necessity of life. And yes, I know that cats, smoking, drinking and expensive cell packages were not in the story.
What makes guesses and estimates about speed, facts? Passing school busses with the red lights flashing, is however a fact, a fact that is very dangerous, not to say illegal. I’m glad the children have a fear of the road. It may prevent them from having a serious involvement with a vehicle. If not already done, please educate them well about road safety. The police cannot just monitor speed at your house. There are far too many roads and speeding complaints to just watch your stretch of the road. Ask the County or the OPP to place the portable speed monitoring sign near your home for a period of time. Your most important defense is education of both drivers, pedestrians & your children. Dog owners beware, if your dog is loose and causes an injury incident, you could be held liable. Keep your dogs from running loose! They, like your children are your responsibility. Though I sympathize with the owners, blame is a 2 way street and the dog should never have been loose.
@What: It is our athletes, politicians with golden pensions and numerous of our CEOs and actors that are overpaid, NOT the police. When was the last time you were held at gunpoint, rushed towards a firearm call or picked up the body of a lifeless child, beloved spouse or anything close to that. Not to include all the carnage they see within our homes and on highways. The PTSD that many officers live with and the sleepless nights endured due to working, being called back to work or getting no days off due to court appearances. Let’s not forget the alimony payments when an officer’s family falls apart because they are never there 4 important dates or Christmas, a birthday an anniversary etc. Walk a foot in their shoes and you will soon realize you/they are well underpaid. Just looking at our Memorial Bridges should make you cringe; but does it? Add more radar trials, interactions, cell pics & SIU and who wud want to be an officer? Maybe you wud want the “overpaid/overstaffed” job!
Children should not have to suffer that kind of pain. I’m glad Dallas’s medical condition seems to be on its way to recovery, and that a full recovery is in sight. Sick Kid’s Hospital saved my life when I was an infant. They can work miracles. Kudos also to the OSMH Pediatrics Unit & the member that initially diagnosed the malady as G-B Syndrome. Good job by all!
You have more police in town than you can shake a tail at. OPP are here as part of 3 officer, count them 3 offices, General HQ, Regional HQ & Deatacment. They come here for training by the car load, officers are always passing through to pick up a new police cruiser, the OPP helicopter unit is here, the TRU team is here. there are upteen other OPP units in Orillia. You will never get that kind of policing with your own police force. On top of this you have the same amount of officers, or more, policing the town, plus officers from 3 other townships that can attend as back up. Sorry, strongly disagree with you. Additionally, the number of OPP officers stationed here, or travelling through here, spend an enormous amount of money which greatly increases your economy. SMH.
Seldom do I ever hear about population/birth control. In my most humble opinion the world’s most pressing environmental issues are caused by this single issue. The “3rd rock from the sun” cannot sustain this world wide population growth. Currently there are about 8.3 billion people on earth, not counting cows, horses & all sorts of other wily mammoth & critters. This has an awful & negative effect on global warming, local & global wars, resource depletion, water consumption, pollution, homelessness, etc. We need to get the world’s maximum population peeled back to about 5 billion to even have a hope of fixing the mess we have made of this planet. At 5 billion, I believe the world has hope. Scientists let’s start looking at the correct solution to our worldly issues, & stop being too subservient to the whims of politicians to speak the unheard truth. Everything else shud then fall into line. Maybe we can support the past generation, not by more births, but by billionaire control.
I understand the circumstances that caused Mr, Damery to think outside the box & create a cozy home for his father-in-law in the bush. Hopefully doing this will not interfere with the rights and safety of other persons who may live in close proximity to this cabin, or cause harm to is father-in-law (I’m mainly thinking of the furnace causing a fire). Methinks government needs to sit down and think out a policy that is satisfactory to society & to people that have absolutely no place to go or turn to. Perhaps it is time to rethink the policy of shutting down all the Regional Health Centres such as The Muskoka Centre in Gravenhurst & Orillia’s Huronia Regional Centre, replacing them with smaller centres, more strictly controlled, focusing on the needs of people like Mr. Damery’s father-in-law who seems to have (almost fatally) slipped between the cracks at all levels of government. Any & all ideas leading to a solution should be evaluated with bipartisan politics a necessity.
