It is upsetting that people are dying when they don’t need to be. The government funds the reserves to take care of their people, except some of the people end up on the streets in Thunder Bay without the reserve funding. Where does this funding go? Perhaps the funding needs to go directly to the people instead of to the band. The money obviously isn’t making it to the people that need it the most. Maybe the bands should be setting up shelters for their people in Thunder Bay if they don’t want to give it to them directly. There’s a good starting place for Mr. Fiddler to explore.
This is a 5-year plan? So in 5 years the city will be expanding it to 200 new homes. Because these ones will be destroyed by that time and the demand will be more than double (and likely much, much higher). This situation won’t get better by providing housing or shelter. Did it work when the city provided free tents? Nope, the problem just grew bigger. If you build it, they will come. And they will come in numbers from other cities and reserves across the region. And the Thunder Bay tax payers will pay for it.I really hope there is a plan for educating and job training that goes alongside with entrance into this community shelter. And not just wishful thinking that other community agencies will pick up the slack on their dime. Kam River Park is gonna be one scary place that no citizen is going to want to frequent. I also hope the city realizes that they will be on the hook to clean up the waterways as it is likely that this is where the garbage and needles will end up.
Collin said, “there is a need in the south core to provide shelter to a relatively large population of people who are experiencing homelessnessReally? Do you actually believe these homeless people once lived in the south core? Nonsense, they migrated there from other places around the city and most of them from places outside of Thunder Bay. You keep building it, and they will keep coming, whether it’s a shelter or a tent city. The Thunder Bay tax payer is not in the position of taking on Ontario’s drug and homelessness problems. If we are going forward with providing social services, treatment and housing for those struggling with addiction, mental health and homelessness, then the province and the Feds need to pitch in their part so it can be done right. This sloppy bandage solution over a gaping infected wound is not going to remedy anything.
Beautiful piece of property! Is the city going to be responsible to clean the river every year? Because we all know that’s where the garbage and waste is going.
Low number of reports because everyone knows that they’re there. It’s like reporting a mosquito sighting. I can’t believe the MNRF would actually release a statement like that.
Put beds in Victoriaville mall. You don’t have to build anything except for privacy walls. And you can save money tearing down the mall which will save tax payers money. You already have existing heat, plumbing, washrooms, etc…You put a homeless encampment beside two rivers and you can expect deaths and drownings. Not to mention garbage polluted rivers which the tax payer will be on the hook for to dredge and clean the waterways.
Wow! Incredible police work there (please read sarcasm). Tbay Police are busting their buts off dealing with a crime riddled city and this is what you come up with. It’s like going fishing and bragging you caught a 25 cent smelt with 50 cent minnow.
Somethings not right here, last year 15b looked like a major sporting event was about to happen. I’ve never seen so many hunters in the bush. And now they want to put more tags out there. Someone is going to get shot by a stray bullet. I can’t believe the overcrowding!
Guilty of an assault by a far left leaning judge. At this rate a “stern look” at a criminal will send an officer to jail or house arrest. My advise: Holster your weapons (or leave them behind) because all you have left is hope that you won’t get assaulted while doing your job.
Hey we’re down on non-violent crimes! Probably because police are too busy investigating the priority violent crimes. But let’s be optimistic and focus on the non-violent stat. Now that’s strength based writing! Takes the sting out a bit from the stats that really matter.
This is a far better solution for those struggling with homelessness, addiction and mental health versus a “temporary homeless shelter” located somewhere in the city that no one can agree on, with a staffing model no one has talked about.
