Check out downtown Midland. The buildings are all full of shops, unlike the empty storefronts throughout downtown Orillia. What's the difference? Midland offers free daytime parking throughout their downtown core. They encourge people to visit the town centre, rather than buildings impediments to keep them away.
While I appreciate the public safety reasons for the parking restrictions, what ever happened to enforcement through education? A simple warning notice would have been sufficient to educate the motorist. The bylaw officer knew when they issued the fine at that location that they were financially impacting someone who was already in a difficult sitaution.
I support speed cameras in school zones when the reduced 40 km/hr speed limit lights are flashing. What I don't support is the sneaky way council reduced the speed limit to 40 km/hr 24/7 only in these three areas, while leaving the long-standing flashing lights in place. Creating a second standard is confusing and amounts to entrapment for the purpose of generating fines. Orillia now has two conflicting speeds standard when travelling in schools zones forcing drivers to spend more time watching signs and less time to watch traffic or pedestrians. Council needs to clean this mess up and apply consistent procedures.
