There should be a statute in the law that allows for strong mayor powers to be rescinded when grossly misused, like happened on the first day our mayor received them.
"McIsaac said he needed strong mayor powers to make decisions quickly..." If this is the kind of quick decision the mayor is making, it is a big mistake to give him this authority.
Why did they get rid of the flashing lights during school hours? I just passed through Newmarket this weekend and the speed limit was 60 normally and 50 during school days. This was a community safety zone and a speed camera area. So the idea that it must be 40km/h 24x7 and can't be variable is hogwash. Severn's community safety zone is 60km/h. Do what you want, city of Orillia. But you don't need to lie about the reasons.
Can't balance because of Sars. Can't balance because of Covid. Can't balance because of Tarriffs. There's always going to be some unforseen world/social/health issue come up. We can't just keep using them as excuses to spend more than we bring in. How big of hole are we able to actually make, debt wise?
It beats me, how there could be such concern about driving cars slowly around the circle: yet nothing is said about boat trailers being reversed across the trail! I mean if the main concern is pedestrian safety, the cars driving frontwards is the least concern!
What bothers me most about this story is the lack of response to her letter writing. It took reaching out to Orilliamatters to get any kind of answer. Whether or not she likes the answer, I think she is entitled to an explanation.
Power failures like this (extended time and widespread areas) used to be extremely rare in Orillia. Even in crazy storms. Now it seems like every time there's a breeze half the city goes out. It's starting to look less and less like these are a mere coincidence with the Hydro One take over.
There was a hiring committee that went through a process and decision. It was voted on and approved by our council. Just because he can does not mean he should just override council's decision. And there was no reason given for this, money or otherwise. There's no reason to believe Sidhu will won't make just as much money through his promotion. He's certainly not going to take additional responsibilities without a pay raise. The wrongful dismissal could cost us even more!
1. Why is an "alternative place" better? (out of sight out of mind?)2. Find the "alternative place" first. Then move the bench. \This isn't finding a solution. it's just pushing the problem somewhere else. People deserve some dignity.
The mayor said he did not want these powers before. So, he now claims he needed strong mayor powers to deal with the emergency. What did firing the duly selected CAO have to do with the emergency?
The cost of everything is up significantly. Not just the cost of officers. Staff in all areas need cost of living increases. Equipment and vehicle prices are up for them too, I'm sure. I don't mean to make excuses for them...but the number is hardly surprising.
