Carney announces that Canada is dropping many retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods

I would have hoped Pierre P would have adopted a "Team Canada" approach rather than take potshots at Carney, whom in my opinion, has done a good job considering who he has to deal with. Pierre P seems to be following the Trump/MAGA handbook. Unfortunately he is not a billionaire who has the support of the parliament/senate etc, just a career politician who is back in the mix thanks to the elected MP who stepped aside. You would think he would be a little more humble. patriotic, and respectful.

So we have an Integrity Commissioner? Since 2018? Does anyone know her job description?, her qualifications?, her remuneration?Kinach's comments dont seem out of line at all.And again this our tax dollars at work?I thought our councillors are elected to have a backbone, question things if they dont seem right, and stand by what they say and do and not be subject to bullying and criticism etc. or subject to speculation and discipline by an "Integrity Commissioner" who, again I hope someone to explain who she is, her job details and her qualifications.Does the "Integrity Commissioner" have anyone to answer to? Anyone overseeing her?

Does anybody out there think that Pierre P would be a better PM negotiating with Donald Trump? in these Extraordinary times? truly negotiating with the Trump people? Carney still seems the lesser of two evils and by far has the experience in business, etc to look after our great country.

So for the most part law abiding citizens will again help to pay other problems that is none of their doing? We the taxpayers, vehicle owners, could be charged, fined, and are these extra monies to go to the drug, homeless, police, corrections, front line health care, that we pay for already?

Did Ms Rennie take her concerns to the Board of Works directly? or just put it out to the masses via social media? I represent a group of concerned neighbour on our small section of a large street and any time we have had an issue about anything I/we have gone directly to PWT and they have always been prompt, courteous and quick to act. I/we cannot thank them enough. I'm not sure bypassing this course of communication and putting your concerns directly to social media and now mainstream media is the best way unless you have no other choice.

We are in our 60s, in good health, been here all our lives but no longer feel comfortable in going downtown at all. Not walking Queen St, or Boardwalk, shopping and dining, not touring the Station Mall, not even to Mill Market or Downtown plaza.

My question to some commentors who criticize Ford and label him as the wrong politiian, then who is the right one? Liberals? NDP? Or is it more "the devil you know"?

I am 63 years old and embarassed to live here. I loved living here for so long but to see where city councils have taken us recently with frivalous adventures and poor investments it is sad. And now I drive by open drug use everyday in the Wellington/East Streets area to and from work downtown. The downtown they have and continue to want to improve? How can they be that out of touch? And continue to ruin this once proud city and vibrant downtown.

Lets see what this transition produces. Whether we like it or not we are a one horse town and that horse is in as bad a shape as I have seen in....ever. They employ 2500 + contractors (either for regular maintenance or special/capital projects), + suppliers (employees and investment in property etc) . We are looking at losing approx 5000 good paying jobs and that doesnt include collateral damage, in a town that cannot afford to lose that number. We need to support Algoma Steel and hope for the future with them still operating or pray for our community without them.

Why would "non permanent residents" count? Students who are only here for 2-4 years? I dont believe they should be included in population count. So what is the count of permanent residents?

Plain and simple, there are/were 3500 people working there. They wii layoff 1000 in March 2026.The people affected have known for at least six months or more. The number was always 1000 or so, but there is a small addition due to US tariffs affecting the DSPC and Cold Mill. The expedited dates for the closing of Ironmaking, Cokemaking in approx four months is mostly due to tariffs. With no tariffs, the above mentioned departments would have probably closed in a year and four months.Carbon tax is absolutey irrelavant, only adds at most is $20 ton which they sell for at least $500 or more. All the best to all people affected, directly and indirectly as it will be substantial.

THIS IS NOT THE EAF. For gods sake. I work in Electrical there. No power outages, no flickering lights. The EAFs whether we like it or not is the saving grace for Algoma Steel, therefore for Sault Ste. Marie. You think it is bad with 1000 laid off there, just think if the rest of us are gone. The city will face hardships like it has never seen and the armchair critics will have to find something new to criticize as many of us have to pack up and seek work elsewhere. Be thankful for what you have as it could very easily be worse, much worse.

I am a landlord and am sitting on vacant units. It seems few commentors, if any, are landlords. I have worked hard to be a good landlord for over twnty years, but it isnt easy. The Tenant Protection says it all in its title. There are definitely unscrupulous landlords, but there are unscrupulous tenants as well. As well, there is very little understanding for us landlords who try to help the housing situation. We try to find good tenants and until you truly find one, we leave units vacant, rather than rent to a problem tenants and suffer all the consequences, non payment of rent, damage, unnecessary noise, etc. Then we are left spending a lot of time and money to evict. I suppose we are a minority, but we still count. Doug Fords idea seems to be a step in the right direction.

Sorry for their troubles, but why the upheaval in management and staff? It doesnt appeae it is working well?

Its a shame what has happened to downtown. My wife enjoys shopping for clothing and the city used to offer a lot as I am aware and I have been told, lol. My wife stated and this is supported by many, that SSM was the women's clothing center of the North. That women actually traveled here from Sudbury (no Costco) to shop mostly Queen St and the Station Mall offerings of womens clothing. And now the majority are closed or closing. Queen St is still looking fair along with Norths Bay Main St and both are ahead of Sudburys downtown, but our other issue is too many malls. Sudbury and North Bay literally have one each and we have three. Way to go Market Mall. Have hope Station Mall and poor Cambrian Mall.
