This city is a joke, fix it then charge you. Good lord, extremely few cities require a permit for every little thing you do. Windows , roof, deck, fence etc....its a money grab at best. We pay for the cost to build, fix or install, I owe the city nothing to change my roof, windows or build anything, once the city foots the bill then I'll pay for a permit. And for the fact that her neighbors like mine are so petty to call the city is disgusting, apparently no one taught them to mind their own business and worry about them not what anyone else is doing.
Useless, need a new mayor ASAP, prioritizing is key and a port IS NOT IT! Short term job creation is not sustainable. Jobs that create long term employment is the goal. In 4 years this mayor has accomplished nothing at all just as I predicted would happen.
If Caputo wants to talk about throwing away money, how about her demands of speed ticket machines that will only be destroyed within days of having them. That is a waste of money that the tax payers are on the hook for. The Y is a valuable asset in this community and much needed daycare spaces and rec spaces for teens. If the passes were cheaper I'd obtain one but I am definitely for using reserve funds to save the Y. Finally a good move city council made. 1 to add to the short list.
This city is such a scam, permit for this and that, this and that, we are quite literally the only city that scams money out of their citizens for changing windows, having a fire, asphalting their drive way, fixing their roof, build a fence so your neighbors can't steal your stuff that the police don't enforce? Hey spend 10,000$ , up your property value but don't forget that permit! Can't wait to move out of this city
2.3 million dollars for the old hospital, we can afford to deal with homelessness. Fact of the matter is if the federal government or provincial would regulate rent/cap rent, more federal housing, less stigmatizing views on mental health and addictions we wouldn't be in the issue we are in. The city alone brags the surplus they have, can't handle the snow properly, can't plow the roads, sand/salt the roads in a timely manner, however the city can afford to buy the old hospital look at purchasing speed trap cameras, same old city counsel, different peeps involved. Before we can deal with the addiction part, we need to ensure ones basic needs are cared for ie. Housing , food, and this city has zero interest in assisting with that. Good ole shoemaker ran his campaign on false promises and hope, neither have been followed through. If shoemaker knew 1 think about addictions & mental health he would of started there. Don't cry we didn't get invited, or no open application.
Good! Rental prices need to continue to drop, no one can afford these rental prices plus utilities. A family shouldn't have to work 4 jobs to afford rent , utilities plus groceries and still have no extra income to enjoy life.
There is a great solution to this problem!, do snow removal on time, not when the snow is over, begin removing banks early and not when they are overwhleming and a problem. Living in this city for the last 40 years , in 40 years this god forsaken city hasn't learned effective snow removal practices.
I've lived in the west end all my life and the East end was prioritized where the west got zero till the very end, same with two years ago, East end was plowed, sanded and salted, west had 2ft of snow on the ground with multiple accidents.
So just a typical day in the ER waiting countless hours, being held up by minimal issues. ERs are for emergencies only, not for colds, flus , headaches etc...that's why we have walk in clinics, online virtual appointments.
Take the 2 hr parking lots ans turn them in to SS parking, we are in need of more medical building and professionals especially downtown. You need a bus to get to almost any medical place especially the hospital, this makes sense to have a medical building downtown. SS did not need a new building, city hall did not need a face lift, we did not need a downtown mall area, we have much bigger issues to worry about. The city should be prioritizing the homeless population , mental health and addictions supports before they start crying over parking related cost losses, they cant even budget a winter budget correctly. They pay by law officers to pester quiet neighbourhoods instead of tackling real issues. This city is unreal! Priorities not wants and needs. We aren't Toronto here, we are a small city that doesn't need glam. City hall just keeps proving inability to run a city effectively and efficiently. SMH!
@lovethenorth but not everyone elected the counsel we have, so why are we to suffer the consequences of other poor voting? Why should those who didn't vote for shoemaker and co. forced to foot the bill for their poor decision? How can city counsel decide to purchase a building when they can't plow roads and salt on time to prevent accidents? Why are they not taking down snow banks till it becomes too dangerous and numerous accidents occur? Why can city counsel not dedicate money where it belongs? Why do my property taxes go up for a building I did not consent to buying?
Cash grab! Municipalities should be ashamed of themselves, same situation in the Sault, permits, surveys, lumber is expensive enough, cities need to grab their fair share too!
Can this city for the love of God please focus on the bare minimum like fixing the roads, learning proper snow removal, learn to sand/salt all roads, maintain side walks and school zones before they consider anything else in this city
Because landlords are greedy and expect to make big bucks on rentals. No one should have to work 4 jobs to afford rent, utilities, groceries and have a bit spare money for fun events. A 3 bedroom apartment or house is not worth 1900 a month. Plus with the electricity rates, your utilities are up to 1000$ a month especially with the older homes. It's ridiculous
Get a new mayor and city counsel, might not smell so "poopy" why are they wasting our tax dollars on this money, approved almost a million in speed cameras, over 30 million for this ridiculous old hospital that's literally being demolished, and now because city counsel doesn't like the smell of the city let's pump out over 30 million again? When are we going to get properly repaired roads? When is snow removal going to be done on time? When am I going to drive down the road to a stop sign and not slide through at 8am? Even if we had a voice, city counsel wouldn't listen, they don't care what citizens want.
Our hospital should allocate their funding better, have better managers and directors running the units in the hospital. I'm sorry but our hospital is one of the worst around, wait times are horrific, the staff are rude, dismis patients concerns. If the hospital is expected to pick up the slack from the GHC foolishness and fhe provinces failure to retain family doctors then take that money and put it towards more clinics, virtual doctors, invest in more walk in clinics or more clinics where doctors can treat a patient not treat them like they are on a conveyor belt or a number in their agenda.
