Details please. What were they doing in the river? Swimming? Why was rescue required? Were they children?

A quota requiring a certain number of councillors be of a specific race is disgustingly racist, pure and simple. As should be the case in any profession, the composition of the elected council should be a pure meritocracy (i,e, the best people for the job). Time to bury the out-of-control EDI nonsense, and bury the shovel along with it.

Marcus, you didn't offer any solutions. In fact, you make this long argument about, in effect, not allowing the "rights" of homeless people to trample the rights of non-homeless people living in their homes and working in their businesses, which (to use your line) intuitively we should ALL hopefully agree with....but your only suggestion is to look at the intercity area instead. There are businesses and residences throughout that part of the city as well. What else you got?

Mr. Wilson, I appreciate you penning this piece. You offer some meaningful numbers. You have centred on the portion of the Mayor’s comments to which he immediately sought to retract and clarify, to substantiate your criticism. Why did you stay clear of offering solutions to the broader problem? Your virtue signalling will not pay the bills for homelessness or mental health. Perhaps you could ‘take a look at what has actually made a difference in other cities, and find out how to apply these strategies’ here in Thunder Bay? Share it here!

This is now a matter of an interim leader who will hopefully hold 20-ish seats in a 2025 election. This will be a person who knows they are going to lose, including their own seat. No significant candidate (Carney, etc) is going to take over the reins before the election. This is a senior, little-to-lose, fall-on-your-(party’s)-sword person! No chance to win. Then allow the party to regroup post-election, have a series of policy-development events that seek to change priorities.Pollievre is no better than O’Toole. In fact, he is probably the worst of the three of O’Toole, Scheer, and him…it’s just a matter of timing. The top-tier candidates for leader will not be in the upcoming leadership race! It will be until at least the next leader, if not the one after that, once the country has seen the disaster the Cons will create, that the top candidates will compete for leader. And the LPC will govern again, not to worry. They are called the “Natural Governing Party” for a reason!

Stupid. The most notable problem with our chosen economic model (capitalism) is the centralization of wealth. We need a massive redistribution of wealth, spread as evenly as possible. With over $4 million we can draw an incredible holiday gift of $1,000 to over 4,000 households! At the same time, if you have hundreds of $ to spend on draws/lottery, you don’t really need the money anyway.

This is the end of a business agreement; happens routinely. It has nothing to do with reconciliation.

It should be open ALL the time! $30 million for an inspection facility? We need a pull off area with an inspector and a clipboard to hold his/her inspection papers. Done! A little shack for a staffer to use the bathroom and have a warm-up during lunch in the winter?…sure. That’s still nowhere near $30 million. And the safest option is to put the cargo on a train and take the truck entirely off the road.

What a joke!

Ms. Gauvin: “transition to what” you ask. Transition to where these individuals are employed and can fund their own housing. The municipal tax base has absolutely no obligation to fund housing for others who choose not to work, choose to spend money on addictions, choose to not be housed…..None!

Really, Marcus? A new leader who goes so far as to call out JT and present, with vigour, a new approach, might (and I stress “might”) save Patty’s seat. But it’s doubtful. For you? - no. Your only remaining credit is that you have been known to sometimes be offside with JT’s woke nonsense; but with your tacit endorsement of it being exclusively his choice to stay on, you’re sealing your own fate. You would be wise to openly be very critical and call for his resignation, like yesterday (as I, and ma y others locally, have told you).More notably, since when does the party not get to decide who the leader is? Why are you towing the false notion that only the leader gets to decide when a new leader is needed? That’s absolutely not the case in the LPC nor in any major federal party. Whether they are governing, and the leader is thus the PM, doesn’t change anything!

Can I (finally) just get a couple ribs from each ribber this time? No I don’t want an entire rack. No I do t want other stuff with it. No I’m not going with a whole bunch of people to split. I just want a rib or two from each ribber and then I might buy a couple more from the one I like best. So maybe $10 all-in to try every one. In other words, much like how Brew Ha is run.

Nope. We, the citizens of Thunder Bay, are seeking a 10% cut in the police budget. Go find it. Karen!

They should be fined and the revenue appropriated across the legitimate post-secondary sector. They are using international students as puppy mills, offering sub-standard, low-cost education while profiting off students hoping for the pipeline to permanent residency. It’s interesting how her comments essentially admit the reality of the private college partnership scam, at least from a financial standpoint. Now there will be less money, but the same garbage education. Good article, Heidi! Now you follow those surplus dollars deferred for “investment in strategic priorities”…report back to us who (what contractor, etc) gets that money. Let us know how much goes into the PC Ford campaign in 2026.

Yikes is right.Did they mention, Collin, that the position is unpaid. We’re in a period of austerity and we’re finding the most gains in those at the top. We thank you for your volunteerism!

I’ve read over a dozen versions of the “human rights approach to homelessness”. Not one of them, in any meaningful way, addresses who and how such an approach is funded. It is therefore an incomplete approach, and should be set aside. It’s pathetic watching some councillors dismiss questions from concerned citizens by simply saying “we take a human rights approach to homelessness”, and saying nothing else, knowing full-well they can’t square their own approach when then hit with the follow-up question many here have already asked - “what about the rights of everyone else?” Oops! It’s not surprising how quickly the “human rights approach” falls apart in any practical context, because it is an utterly tilted, incomplete approach, that seems worthy only in theory; theory constructed by social justice apologists.

We don't need a turf facility. We will just retrofit the James Whalen tug for indoor soccer. All those soccer moms will love hanging out in the Kam River Park waiting for their kids who insist on doing a summer sport in the winter. I'll even throw in a used soccer ball; no charge!

Pay them the same as kindergarten teachers…same benefits, same Teachers pension, registration in OCT. You’ll have those positions filled tomorrow; simple.

Why the purpose to be “quietly relocated”? We had weeks of news articles at even a suggestion that TBPS be relocated or have a new building constructed. This here is a brand new build, so no doubt a costly move, and presumably much more operating cost, facilities-wise, moving forward. Why the secrecy?
