Son in Law is sketchy and thinks rules don’t apply to him. I wouldn’t hire him as a contractor. He brought it upon himself by going to the media in the first place to tell everyone. There would have been notice given well before the demolition and a solution was presented even if not the solution they wanted.
It wasn’t about removing the tents. It was an attempt to force people into treatment against their will. That’s the humane rights violation. That’s the big red line that councillors feel has been crossed.
Guelph has grown. It takes less time for me to drive to Fergus than to drive to either movie theatre. Being car-less might be a virtue signal to those living in the inner core, but is not realistic for people in the suburbs. Nothing to do with nostalgia. Common sense and practicality. Older folks with mobility challenges maybe don’t want to be walking to catch a bus. Younger folks with kids and their paraphernalia in tow, maybe don’t want to be constrained by bus space and schedules. Maybe some do. Nobody is saying bring back the giant overhead crown in St George’s Square to keep cars off the streets. That would be true nostalgia that predates 1990s.
Terrible tragedy. Neither the family, nor the driver will ever be the same. That parking lot, though, is an accident waiting to happen. I was just there the other day and watched a man slowly back into one of the handicapped spots. He was trying to be careful. Meanwhile a yahoo in a big pickup truck kept honking at the poor man to hurry up. I remember thinking that if something like this happened while the driver was trying to leave on the day of the tragedy, it would have distracted anyone trying to get in or out of there. I don’t agree it should be blamed on age. The driver had passed his recent test. I'm sure his family would say he was a good person too. I am sorry for the family’s loss and I understand they are angry. It’s not going to bring their beloved back or ease the bereavement process or change the court verdict by launching an American style law suit on the man who has clearly expressed responsibility. All drivers, not just aged ones need to be more mindful and patient.
Drive through south Guelph or east Georgetown along Guelph St and they are a pretty similar series of commercial strip malls. I suspect both sets of residents also commute to the GTA. So, there appears to be lots in common.
You can make butter from cream. My guess is last year’s butter thieves have reemerged in time for holiday baking. Watch, it will Brampton and KW next like last year.
