Everyone who feels like you should invite your “unhoused neighbours “ to pitch their tents, distribute their stuff and throw their paraphernalia in your backyard. If you all were really supportive as you pretend to be then do something vs just trying to be martyrs. All your talk is simply that - just talk. Time to end these encampments that are destroying our downtown and other areas.

Elite taxpayers? How about ALL taxpayers. Why do you think that everyone who has a job, works hardand pays their fair share is somehow wealthy and the bad guy? Downtown is not “mostly occupied by bars”. Support that with data please.

Which “we” are you speaking of? Not everyone wants a little suburban plot of land. High density is the way forward.

Well soon you’ll have someone new to blame everything on. Guaranteed that people always see the glsss half empty will always find fault. No matter what. Not saying I agree with all decisions but who knows what we will end up with.

I totally understand how difficult it must be for not only this individual but what about all the other people in similar situations? Can anyone who needs a home simply build wherever they please? How is sewage managed? This is City property and squatting is simply not allowed for many good reasons.

sledd, likewise many of us are tired of your endless dialogue but what are you actually doing to help them? I suggest a monthly auto deposit to a fund would be a good start. You can register a charity to do just that. So do something meaningful. And sorry a protest means nothing other than more mess to be cleaned up. You’re correct - it is a PUBLIC space or supposed to be. Sadly not anymore. And the majority I know most definitely don’t support encampments given how the residents treat our PUBLIC property. No worries. I’ve submitted my letter and will be at the meeting.

Why is this all the fault of the mayor or the premier!?? Come on, where is the family or their encampment neighbours? It is sad for sure to see what is happening but putting all the blane on elected officials is ludicrous.

Interesting. We wouldn’t be honouring anyone else who was facing 2 criminal offences for sexual assault no matter what they had done for their community.

You are confusing access to public spaces with living in public spaces. Speaking about the downtown centre specifically, I cannot use it anymore. Even the benches have people sleeping or passed out on them, there are people washing clothes and their bodies in the fountain and there is so much garbage laying around including discarded needles. Homelessness and drug addiction is a serious problem but for those of us who live, work, shop and own businesses it’s not ok to continue status quo.

No matter where you stand on “better than tents”, I think everyone would agree that this has been a giant fiasco. First Guthrie talks it up for who remembers how long even looking for land donors on FB. Then his CAO’s report says “no no we can’t do that “ so we’ll pass the buck off to the County who, while responsible, has never stepped up to the plate. Meanwhile the Tiny Homes Coalition is working hard behind the scenes (the only ones who are) and the grand finale is Wellington county dozing off and speaking with yet more political rhetoric and turning it back again. With 100 percent certainty nothing will happen this winter. I feel badly for those who hoped and believed in our “trusted” officials and truly expected anything to come to fruition. What a disgraceful performance by all involved.

How much was spent to build this lot just a couple of years ago? It has basically no users except police officers who are parked taking a break and is not even open for downtown events or available for GO parking. What a waste!!!

Mayor Guthrie wanted to look like such a hero even posting on FB with his grand ideas and looking to acquire donated property . Oh but he wasn’t serious of course. I’m not supporting or opposing the concept but rather how incredibly ridiculous the mayor, council and city staff look. No due diligence done up front to assess property availability, infrastructure costs, ongoing maintenance and support. Just cheerleading. What a joke.

What a happy story and a good life ahead for Cleo.

The city is also negligent here. They let it go for years and did nothing.

I hope they update the height rules. It is unrealistic to expect to build what is needed for our future population growth and do it with 1950’s style sprawling bungalows. Guelph is no different than other Ontario cities who must change with the times.

Most of us who are over 50 will be dead and gone before a new hospital is built. Given the population growth, the fact that so many don’t have family physicians and therefore turn to the hospital and the aging population who will require more care, it’s incomprehensible that this will be years and years away. Nothing pragmatic or sensible about it.

I don’t think that is a good idea for many reasons.

Why not be happy that these units will be built instead of always looking for something negative!?!
