Imaging you worked for years, doing everything society told you that you had to in order to be successful. You went to school, you got the degrees & got the job. Through calamitous circumstances or a few disastrous mistakes, you now need to use the shelter system. There, by the winds of fate go the rest of us. We should show compassion, not contempt.
Can we re-examine full time councilors? I believe that switch was recommended, but, council disagreed. Citing that many of them put in full time hours for this part time gig & reducing the number of councilors would impact the vibes (my paraphrasing) for constituents. I like & respect most of these councilors. I feel that most are honestly trying to do the best they can for us. However, I also feel that having full time councilors would improve outcomes for our community. Attentions would not be split (for those whom have other jobs) & it would attract a different type of community leader.
Having met Corey a few dozen times between 2007 & 2009. I can say he came across as a fiercely loyal, huge scary time-bomb. Ya never knew what would set him off or how big the explosion was going to be. Often embodying everything wrong with policing in North America.
The Province & Feds dereliction of duty is pushing Municipal budgets up & up. Until we elect responsible adults to the other two levels of government, municipalities will continue to bare the burden.
How can the City in good conscience approve a no parking proposal? Council has neglected Transit for decades & now, SkyLine wants to say these tenants will be relying on transit? IF Skyline pumps $$$ into transit to help restore optimal service, then MAYBE. Councilors, please deny & let SkyLine got to the tribunal.
Proof positive that we MUST give people viable public transit options. Adding roads & adding more lanes aren’t a sustainable solution. I would like to see the province cost out what subsidizing Ontario business freight trucking on the 407would cost. Why Ontario business? Support local business owners. Why them over private vehicles? ‘Cause there aren’t other options (like trains) for a large amount of the freight truck traffic. If we invest in more public transit (as my first sentence pleads for, we would have viable options for most people whom now choose to drive.
"It's very unfortunate that that's happening, but we're pouring money into that," Premier Ford said. It’s not unfortunate when you were told this was going to happen & you pushed through any way. Successive Ontario Governments have balanced their books on the backs of our future & here we are, with a crumbling heath care system in all facets. Pure & simple, this is on us. We NEED to demand better of our representatives & not take “it’s complicated” or “we have to juggle multiple priorities” any longer. Quite literally our futures depend on it. Our kids lives depend on it.
A surplus for Guelph Transit would indicate, to me, that the perennial proposed cuts to service or reduction of frequency are ill founded. Invest in your infrastructure council members, help us help you. If we can get around more easily, we can support local business more readily. Then we can all reap the benefits of your leadership. Don’t? & we won’t.
I understand the vitriol expressed in a lot of these comments. I would like to express that Ontario municipalities have had 30+ years of downloading from the Province. It’s no wonder the City must keep increasing taxes. They can’t run deficits, they have VERY limited revenue options. Even fewer since Douggy Fresh started doing favours for his developer friends.
Likely unpopular opinion. Given it’s excellent location & obvious heritage needs, the City & County should co-purchase this building & explore best use. I would love to see a subsidized housing / shared community space style project.
Quick little re-write for you… “Mayor ‘will not hesitate’ to use strong mayor powers for posturing”… there done. Go ahead and use it, free of charge. Building more McMansions & Mailboxes in the sky won’t fix housing in Guelph, Ontario or Canada. We need a strong political will behind true subsidized, affordable & sustainable housing. As well as the political will to address the growing economic gaps within our society. The rich are getting richer & the poor are getting poorer. Three guesses, which group donates to the mayor’s campaigns? I doubt you’ll need the first two guesses.
You’ll have to move out of province, everyone is in this boat. Premiers Harris, Eaves, McGuinty, Wynne & Ford can be thanked for it… or all of us for electing them.
