Downtown merchants may want to look at creating and paying into a fund throughout the year to cover the costs of the downtown parking for the months of November and/or December as a way to draw in more customers. However, asking tax payers to absorb the cost associated with your private business is ridiculous and not a good business model
Why would we spend our taxpayers money, on a certification when some of our community members don't even make that living wage? Very out of touch and gives a virtue signaling impression
Krampus, that is a fair point but it is also the point being made in the article. When the parking is made free its not always used by paying customers and benefitting the stores. I appreciate that rent/taxes are higher for commercially owned locations, but its still unacceptable to expect tax payers to absorb a businesses expenses. Would you find it acceptable for tax payer dollars to go towards the mall or walmarts parking? I know I am not okay with it
They have been operating since 1976 and They bid on the contract. This is not a bleeding heart situation where we need to give them time. My yard is now full of snow and recycling that will make a mess while it sits out there all week for them to pick it up.
Oh we are so sorry! We didn't realize we were supporting a social service that required a soft transition and a buddy system in order for them to successfully complete the job They Bid On
I hope the bins have animal locking devices and that the trucks will fit into the townhouse complexes all around town. People wont be pulling massive bins that are 4' tall out to the main roads
They are being removed across Orillia. My community lost over 20 trees last summer, having to be cut down due to Emerald Ash Borer. A simple google search could provide more details on how it destroys trees and spreads.
Do you often make up scenarios to justify your opinion? Political leanings and parties had nothing to do with people being held accountable for their speeding. The cameras and the speeds were posted well in advance, city employees who generate speeding tickets will be held accountable through their employer, the same as anyone caught speeding in a work vehicle.
I am not sure what you want the municipality to do on private property? I feel bad for these households but the power resides with them to sell and move, or have their homes raised and new footings installed. The municipality and tax payers are not responsible for fixing this.
San, we are already being tracked by AI. Have a cellphone? Fitbit/smart watch? Your being tracked and all stats are being gathered. I appreciate your concern, but its a day late and a dollar short in 2025. Warnings about the cameras were posted well in advance and many believe that people need to pay the piper when they break our community and societal rules.
You are absolutely correct, it is easy to say obey the law. Laws exist for a reason. Should they follow your advice and keep those areas at 40, at all times, you can rest assured some people will still speed, breaking the law. If you don't like the cameras either drive on another road or drive the speed limit
Oh great idea, I am sure the standard vehicles struggling to get up Westmount, fittons, coldwater and west streets in the snow should be great. Perhaps the council should keep their concerns directed at road and winter maintenance instead of trying to impose retirement speeds to those of us going to work and keeping the economy going in this city.
Yes, it is far worse than previous occurences. Climate change is something our entire country is dealing with and warnings have gone out for at least the last 20 years. It won't get better for the people in that area, so either sell and move or be prepared for worse to come.
@MG920 not sure why you believe that the those in the city paying to take the bus to work, facing the same economy as everyone else should some how subsidize others. Especially those on social assistance, they are already receiving assistance off the backs of the working class. The bus is my only source of transportation to go to work, grocery shopping and doctor appointments so I guess in your estimation some fictional benefactor should pay for my pass too.
As I stated in a previous comment, the company is not new it's been doing this since 1976 and it BID on this contract meaning it knew what it was getting into, the routes and tonnage being processed.
@Brad Mathews: Do you ride the bus? Do you commute back and forth to school, daycare and work every day?@Shakeyw: Those are arterial roads, specifically built to accomodate the current speeds and traffic load. There are major shopping centers, grocery stores, restraunts, manufacturing plants and tandem axel vehicles on those roads and there is absolutely no reason for a lowered speed limit.
NoMore, Unfortunately I do not know of any parking revenue program meant to help create more spaces, but I think that would be a great idea. What I do know is that the the bus going up to the mall is a shared cost. What I do know is that on Wednesday, March 06, 2019 the City of Orillia postes the breakdown: "The total cost of running transit service to the mall is $47,500, which was historically paid by the mall annually, and will now be divided between the mall ($15,000), the Township of Severn ($15,000) and the City of Orillia ($17,500)." This was done in order to retain employment opportunities for our community and to ensure that our seniors were able to safely make it to the grocery store, as it is a geographical food desert. As a tax payer I am not happy we are subsidizing it, but the outcomes seem to warrant it. Just one persons opinion though
Wow, this place just keep falling apart. Not to mention how it slowly spreads Legionella bacteria. Hope someone took a really good look at those responsible for all contracts in building and maintaining this property, instead of just dipping into tax payer reserves to gloss over the issues.
