I was a paramedic here in the city for forty years and I was shocked by the increase of horrific accidents I attended along 102 and west Arthur in the last few years. I believe this is a good decision for the residents of thunder Bay. We can certainly revisit the decision in five years and see if it is costing lives. Then we can vote to change it. That’s the beauty of living in a liberal democracy. But I believe this decision will save lives. And I congratulate the counsellors for the work they’ve done.
Maybe it’s time to take the volunteer out of the Shuniah Fire Department and begin hiring part-time and full-time firefighters. I believe that the City of Thunder Bay should also adopt a part-time / full time model as well in order to save the taxpayers some money. We will survive.
I will miss Peterson’s Lumber, as I’m sure many will. It was so nice to shop at a place that still had an old-time feel. A business where you could also have a good conversation with the people who worked there. Whether it was advice on a project or just a chat about what was happening in the world. Enjoy your retirement.
I have always supported parity among front line emergency workers. Each job has different stresses but each is essential and extremely demanding. We are losing these people to PTSD and we cannot retain staff because few people want to do a career like this for long. The least the public can do is show them we value all these professionals equally. Past practice is no excuse for underpaying Paramedics.
For the record Johnathan, I was a paramedic who while on duty jumped into the McIntyre in October of 2005 to pull a drowning woman from the river. I then revived her in the back of my ambulance and drove her to the hospital where she was treated and discharged weeks later. Why is it that you feel I deserve less for the work I do?
I have always supported parity for all emergency service workers. Their jobs are different with different expectations and stresses. But if we expect people to do a difficult job as a career and hope to have them stay in that job then their salaries should reflect these equally important professions. Past practice should not prevent Paramedics from obtaining parity now that we rely on them as much as we have always relied on police and fire.
Seems like Hauth is doing everything she can to avoid court. I thought she couldn’t wait for her day in court to have her case heard and clear her name. Let’s see all the facts.
