I am an amateur historian and can tell you that while there may be some vague similarities the US is in no way on a similar path. To say so is using a cheap trope for one whom you happen to disagree with. One could also say that the Democrats were reminiscent of oppressive communism. Notice how the American left has backed away from the "threat to democracy slogans"....because they were just that, slogans.
Comparing Canadian politicians to Trump is a cheap Liberal stunt. No a huge Pollievre myself but the comparison is silly. Fifteen years ago they compared Harper to Bush, just ridiculous.
My goodness folks, we live in Canada, we have snow, we walk in snow. If the city went to the expense to ensure that every sidewalk and street was plowed to everyone's satisfaction at all times you would be screaming at having to pay for it through increased taxes.
The reality of the situation is two-fold. There is an issue with speeding motorists in Orillia and other communities. Unfortunately the police no longer provide effective traffic enforcement. So the government allows municipalities to use speed cameras. It turns out that they are so effective that they turn into a cash cow for municipal budgets, millions of dollars in Barrie alone. Now they look at it as a "sin tax" and from the comments above, a rather popular one in Orillia. The scary part of it is that the human element is being removed from law enforcement and that should be concerning to us all.
Towns and developers won't be happy until they have destroyed every piece of natural land and squeezed every dollar out of it. Hopefully Severn puts a stop to this insanity.
People seem to get a kick out of antagonizing police officers to get a negative reaction then filming said reaction to get social media attention. Not a huge Ford fan but he is not wrong on this one. As we continue as a society to want to disrespect our institutions we become less civilized.
Thank you for a great read...this has been so difficult for so many families, we are in day 8 without power and water in Severn. One thing that doesn't help our morale is when you see our local MPP, the Emergency Management Minister, posting so many smiley promo photos. It's insensitive to those suffering and almost seems like she is taking advantage of a disaster to promote her own image. Tone deaf to say the least.
Always special when doctors become political activists. Surprised that a physician isn't talking more about healing....SCS do not heal or treat, they just provide a safe place to get high.
Ford may be a clown, but he was commenting on how nice the vet facility was, not suggesting people go there. The opposition makes it sound onerous and the media mimics the opposition. At worst it was a poor choice of words, hardly repulsive. And Ford didn't create the health care crisis, he just hasn't done enough to fix it. All three party leaders need to grow up!
Unfortunately restraints are necessary for violent patients, our health care workers safety and patient safety are paramount. As stated, they are only used when necessary.
I would suggest 10 km over should be the first fine. Anything less than that would be unfair. A police officer would not normally pull a driver over for anything less than 10 over the limit.
Also the province has not funded post secondary properly, colleges compensated by hitting the international student pool...so the Ford government is just as responsible as the feds are, maybe more so.
Canada Post, professionals at turning customers off...and the Orillia location has made an art out of bad service (at least from my experience and those of folks I know)
