GuelphToday 9This bylaw quite possibly will discourage the planting of trees. I have four or five qualifying trees on my property which I planted myself. We all have enjoyed the benefit of those trees over the years. I have no need nor desire to remove them but this bylaw makes them a potential liability in that it seeks to punish me for planting them in the first place should I choose to no longer have them.While I appreciate the intent of the bylaw I also see it as government overreach. City council should ask if there is a present problem with excessive private tree removal. I suggest that there isn’t, in which case this is a restrictive bylaw seeking to address a problem that doesn’t exist. We were almost exactly here when the current bylaw was passed and the answer at that time was that no such problem existed.
