City council approves request for proposals for turf facility

Council swallowed the hook line and sinker when Michael Venezaile president of soccer Northwest told council the facility could be built for under $20 million dollars and that he was going to raise $1 million dollars towards the cost. Now taxpayers are looking at over $52 million when approximately $10 million of interest on a $19 million dollar loan is included in the cost..Is it any wonder the city's debt is over $200 million dollars and the shortfall on maintaining existing infrastructure is over $30 million dollars each year. This irresponsible spending by council is the very reason the City of Thunder Bay has the highest taxes in Northern Ontario and the second highest in the entire province.Where's the plebiscite and what excuse does Michael Venezaille use now to avoid his promise to raise $1 million dollars?

The city has spent over 4 years pursuing an unaffordable $ 55 million dollar indoor soccer facility. This is the city's priority.

The city's high taxes will only put more seniors and others out into the streets.

Good financial decion by both council and administration.

Where is the funding coming from? Why does city administration and some councilors think that taxpayers should be on the hook for this? There is no commitment from any level of government.

I have talked to many of the business owners in the downtown south ward and no one supports this proposed location. Putting a homeless village on Miles Street near Simpson Street makes no sense. With 4 bars and a cannabis store within close proximity this location is unsuitable for the homeless, many who have serious addictions.

Rather purchase some groceries. Our unusually high taxes have already paid for parking there for the next 1000 years. And we can afford $ 52 million for an indoor soccer facility and tens of millions to subsidize an Art Gallery

Thunder Bay, despite its small population continues to have more city employees and more of them on the sunshine list on a per capita basis than most cities in this province and across Canada. The average salary of those on Thunder Bay's is close to $130,000 dollars. Is it any wonder that our city taxes are the highest in Northern Ontario and second highest in the province.

I agree the city should not be building an indoor turf facility fully funded by the taxpayers. More wise decisions needed.

$16 million dollars worth of upgrades and half is supposed to come from fundraising and grants. How much have they raised so far. Nothing! How much will they raise . NothingHow much did Soccer Northwest raise towards the cost of the $52 million dollar indoor turf facility despite promising to raise at least $1 million dollars? Nothing! How much will the taxpayers be expected to pay? Everything! 100%And the city will lose $220,000 a year in lost tax revenue. One question: Where are struggling taxpayers going to get the money to pay for all of this?

The city has no funding in place for this and no commitment from any level of government. Both Grace Pllace and the shelter house are adding more beds this winter. I am sure there are many options and facilities to be found if only administration and council would take the time to look.

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATIONSpend 17.5 million tearing down Victoriaville Mall and open up Victoria Ave.Then build another Victoriaville Mall on Miles St. near Simpson Street.

No one I have talked to supports a plan to build a centralized library. Nor do they want to pay higher taxes to support such an expensive and unnecessary facility. Thanks to administration. Hope this is the beginning of common sense prevailing out of the new city managers office namely John Collin.

The increased parking times and fees will hurt many businesses who already are struggling to make ends meet. Taxpayers will be on the hook to come up with even more money to cover operating expenses for the new Art Gallery which will take a big hit from this money grab. How much will it cost to monitor this? Poor decision.

No more surveys. Tbnewswatch survey (city wide) said it all. About 65 % out of approximately 2 ,000 respondants said no to South Side location.

Sad. Many Businesses are struggling for their very survival. The question is how many will close or be unable to expand and hire more staff. Sad

Thank-you to MP Marcus Powlowsk for speaking up about the proposed locations for 100 housing units in the South Side of the city. It's all about location and he is correct that the two sites being considered by council and administration would be detrimental to the re vitalization of the downtown south core. The city is planning to spend about $17.5 million tearing down Victoriaville Mall and re-opening up Victoria Ave. to vehicular traffic hoping to bring some life back to this area. So would council not be wise to spend a little time trying to find a location that would be suitable for the homeless and one that would not be harmful to the residents and businesses in the south core.

City taxpayers do not have the money to build a new Library. The city still has not torn down Victoriaville Mall after voting to spend $17.5 million dollars last year to do so this year. And where is the city going to get $52 million dollars to build the new soccer plex? The city of Thunder is known as the city with the big heart but at tax time its we have to cut services and raise taxes. Now we are known as the city with the highest taxes in Northern Ontario and second highest in the province.

Destroying a downtown business community is not the answer to the city's homeless problem.
