I believe addional accommodation can be found without building a homeless village. I also don't think the city should make Thunder Bay a destination for the out of town homeless. Obviosy the city has a big drug problem and treatment is crucial for those seeking help. The money the city will save by not building and operating a homeless village can be put to better use.
Is administration not listening? The Miles Strert location for a homelless village will due more harm to struggling businesses and many residents who live and pay taxes in thec south core. This is why this location was rejected by council and by the entire downtown business community. If administration wants a homeless village they must find a location that won't harm the business community and cause more businesses to close.
If the city does not build a homeless village they will save $2.7 million dollars ( city's share) and another 1.5 on operational costs. Would this money be better spent on treatment and the facilities that are better qualified to house the homeless?
Many homeowners are already struggling to make ends meet and the increasing costs to operate a home or pay rent make it very difficult for those on fixed and low incomes.
Just when you thought the Mayor was listening to reason and the downtown business community he now states he is going to vote yes. Looks like administration got to him.
Mr Powlowski is correct. The Miles Street location is absolutely the last thing the downdown core needs. Forget about revitilization. The location was and still is terrible. Who would want to move their business anywhere near this site or even open up a new business there?
Support existing faciities . Some agencies with financial support may be able to retrofit existing buildings and accommodate more residents. Look for alternate solutions. Concentrate on treatment. Homeless villages will likely cause more problems than they will ever solve.
Revitalization of the south core now has a good chance of succeeding. It's hard to believe administration recommended the Miles Street location not once but twice. Thanks to the council members who voted for a new location that would not negatively impact the business community.
Shelby Ch' ng stated that the redevelopment of this former industristrial site will pay dividends to the city. It simply is a waste of taxpayers money and something we can't afford or need. The only dividend taxpayers will get is when their next tax bill arrives in the mail showing yet another big tax increase.
After all the businesses and homeowners in the area campained against this location. Buliding this right across the street from a bar and store that sells canabis and within a few blocks of 3 other bars is just one of the many reasons the downtown community rejected this site and said no and council agreed.
This city is getting rid of one mistake by a previous council, namely Victoriaville mall. Why when the business community and nearby residents say NO to the Miles Street location is administration saying YES. The business communiiyy is being treated like second class citizens despite the fact they pay high taxes and contribute greatly to the city's tax base.
We the taxpayers don't need or want this. Many of us are having a hard enough time making ends meet now. No one I have talked to supports this. Just like the library that was going to raise millions and rent space at Intercity Shopping Centre and went nowhere.
