Is administration not listening? The Miles Strert location for a homelless village will due more harm to struggling businesses and many residents who live and pay taxes in thec south core. This is why this location was rejected by council and by the entire downtown business community. If administration wants a homeless village they must find a location that won't harm the business community and cause more businesses to close.
Many homeowners are already struggling to make ends meet and the increasing costs to operate a home or pay rent make it very difficult for those on fixed and low incomes.
Mr Powlowski is correct. The Miles Street location is absolutely the last thing the downdown core needs. Forget about revitilization. The location was and still is terrible. Who would want to move their business anywhere near this site or even open up a new business there?
After all the businesses and homeowners in the area campained against this location. Buliding this right across the street from a bar and store that sells canabis and within a few blocks of 3 other bars is just one of the many reasons the downtown community rejected this site and said no and council agreed.
And you wonder why our taxes are so high. And a year wasted discussing the size of council and then doing nothing. No wonder this city is in such a mess.
Nohing has changed. This location is detrimental to residents and businesses in the area who contribute greatly to the city's fragile economy. Helping the homeless should not be at the expense of those who live and work in this downtown location. That is why this location was voted down by council. They heard loud and clear from these taxpayers who are just trying to live and earn a living in this area and contribute to the city's well being.'
Council swallowed the hook line and sinker when Michael Venezaile president of soccer Northwest told council the facility could be built for under $20 million dollars and that he was going to raise $1 million dollars towards the cost. Now taxpayers are looking at over $52 million when approximately $10 million of interest on a $19 million dollar loan is included in the cost..Is it any wonder the city's debt is over $200 million dollars and the shortfall on maintaining existing infrastructure is over $30 million dollars each year. This irresponsible spending by council is the very reason the City of Thunder Bay has the highest taxes in Northern Ontario and the second highest in the entire province.Where's the plebiscite and what excuse does Michael Venezaille use now to avoid his promise to raise $1 million dollars?
Edmonton - largest indoor soccer facility in Canada cost $7 million dollars. Thunder Bay's proposed soccer facility cost over 50 million dollars. Thunder Bay's debt one of the highest per capita in Canada.
