Should the city save historic McQuillan’s Bridge or just its arches?

I'm not surprised that it has come to this as the city has a very poor record when it comes to preservation of heritage structures. When Stone Road was widened the plan was just to replace the old bridge but it was retained and money was spent, probably quite a bit, to realign the road as it is today. As it was strong enough to carry traffic at the time I though that we might see some work done on it to preserve its condition and keep it as a pedestrian bridge but it seems it was just allowed to decay. Someone has written "DEMOLITION BY NEGLECT" on the girder visible in the photograph and this seems to be a good description of what has happened. Shame on those responsible.

This is a fine list of people who deserve recognition for their contributions -- except for Don Cherry. His description refers to his "bold broadcasting style". Perhaps this refers to the November 19, 2019 rant about immigrants not wearing poppies that finally got him fired. Or maybe it's the many digs at non-white & Canadian players who didn't play the "right" way.His pandering to those who would agree with his views is one of the reasons that hockey and I parted company long ago. He deserves nothing more than being forgotten.

I always thought that hockey was interesting and exciting enough to be enjoyed without this sort of technological help. I guess it's not.

Wait for the announcement by Doug Ford of Guthrie's being appointed to a great job with the province.

"City Councillors work generally 15-20 hours a week. Sometimes more, oftentimes less."What is your source? I have known a number of councillors over the years and for them, these would be short hours indeed.

Not buying this land would be a missed opportunity. This a special place as there are few other places that one can enjoy the natural river from both sides or walk the trails. For those paddling to Hespeller it is a place to stop and enjoy the river, its surroundings, the wildlife and some peace and quiet.

What do you mean by "one of the only"? Is it one of the few remaining or is it the only one left? It can't be both.

"... the building is one of the only remaining pagoda-like glass structures in North America."What does this mean? Is it the only one or is one of afew?

Bill 5 is truly odious for reasons you have mentioned but also for many more. However, a 48% (watch your math) raise for MPPs is fully justified. The amount is large but spread over the 16 years since their current salary was set, the equivalent annual increase is just 2.6%.There is more however. Had the government had the courage to pay MPPs properly (people whine about this) an MPP who was sitting then and is still sitting would have earned another $50,000 over that period because the pay would have increased each year.I'm surprised that Ford supported this increase. Usually he is more generous with his business friends, think Green Belt and Ontario Place for example, than with those who actually earn money such as nurses.

james561, I think you are mostly right in that any party in power can spend well or badly. In spite of this, many people still think that the Liberals are just pouring money into the Ottawa river never to be seen again while the Conservatives are full of economic virtue. However, at least at the federal level, the experience is quite different. Taken from Statistics Canada's Web site (https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/daily-quotidien/250109/dq250109c-eng.htm), in 1993 the Mulroney government left us a deficit of 12% of GDP, a level not to be seen again until COVID-19 appeared. The Chretien and Martin Liberals turned this into a 3.5% surplus which Harper quickly turned back into a 3.5% deficit in spite of big cuts to the military and programme spending. The Trudeau government kept spending close to the balance point.

Susan Watson forgot to mention the aroma of Ford's friend's spa at Ontario place and the unnecessary shutting down of the science centre. Ford is about as ethical and trustworthy as the tangerine tyrant.

How could this have been published without mentioning that there is a grocery store right across the street. Are they part of the plans? What effect will the new one have?
