Hyprocracy lies with protestors. Creating political ties and solidarity with other universities is one thing, but to attack our banking institutions of their investment portfolios while wearing rubber soled shoes is another. Unbelievable! I hope that none of the protestors are enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce degree. This could be a gamechanger for them.
Wow, 53 jerry cans! I did some research and calculations with respect to the information stated by the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Regulations. The maximum weight to carry gasoline is 150 kg. 1 jerry can (25 L.) = 18.5 kg. Therefore, 150 kg. would be approx. 8 jerry cans. I hope that this individual made it back home to Atikokan without incidence. Also, the retailer could be in a lot of legal issues here. It is nice to be charitable, but safety comes first. I believe that this story will raise a greater presence of law enforcement at this gas bar for the next few weeks, or so.
Trump has done it once again! Not because he has ceased all trade talks, but because he has managed to get our readers to go political. The ceased trade talks simply deals with commerce, but so many are wound uptight about politics that the comments are closely 50/50 for both Liberals and Conservatives. When Trump couldn't find a legitimate reason to cease trade talks, he chose to address a 1987 ad that has little to no relevance to our current trade issues. A scapegoat. What he did succeed to do was to agitate our readers to go political. And that's what his game plan is all about. He is still wedging away at our two major political party supporters to state comments against one another. Trump wants Canada to divide, become weak and try to walk in and make Canada their 51st state. Trump may stoop to wild tantrums, talk with lunacy, distract with courtroom fallacy, but his main goal is to make Canada USA's 51st state. A political divide should not be an option here.
In my earlier years, I used to be a big game hunter. However, in the early 80s, laws have changed drasically when harvesting big game. I gave up hunting and sold my weapons. Also, I took up scubadiving. I purchased a 35 mm. camera for both land and underwater and took hundreds of pictures. Now, I was able to capture nature at its fullest (air, land and water). I consider myself as being a naturalist even though I don't get out as much as I use to before. There was a time when my path crossed with a Conservation Officer. I wore hunting apparel for safety sake. He asked me if I was hunting. I said "yes". He then asked me to show him my weapon and hunting licence. I pulled out my camera and told him that I don't have a hunting licence. At first he was stunned, but then he began to laugh shortly afterwards. Even Conservation Officers have a sense of humour. The best thing about this story is that I never had to pay any fines for unlimited shootings and for not having a hunting licence.
I believe that Administration of the City of Thunder Bay is on the right tract here. Now is the time to educate young and growing minds with our political structures and show how these structures intertwine with decisions of council, Provincial Legislature and Parliament. Perhaps the Ministry of Education could create Political Science - 101 happen starting in Grade 10. Teachers are gifted with teaching skills, and I'm sure that an introduction program can be put together. There are so many issues that can be used as part of the cirriculum - it's limitless. I hope that teachers and the Ministry of Education will follow through with administration's suggestions. Thumbs up for Ms. Powers' and Mr. Walters' efforts to introduce a vital need of our youth's participation in civics.
There maybe another motive for the mine's closure. It is stated that the mine and USW have entered into a 3-yr. contract; only to say that the mine is closing after six months into the contract. Whether it is mismanagement, I do not know. What I do suspect is that this is a union-busting tactic that many mines do to help increase their management strengths when they decide to sell. Only the experienced, younger, family oriented workers will be selected by the new owners. Also, these recalled workers will be working for new management, under a new mine name, and only if they sign a contract stating that they will not support organized labour. The decison-makers at the top know the business all to well, and they manipulate severances of older and not so healthy employees to make their property more appealing for the next perspective buyer. I have seen this union-busting tactic happen for decades now, and our provincial government has never gotten involved to help the displaced workers.
Lately, I had rather unsettling talks with two senior staff postal workers about their strike actions. One member was adamant about withholding pensoners' cheques just so that people could pressure the fed. gov't. I was angered that postal workers would stoop that low as to use people as pawns for their bargaining powers. The worker's main concern was to keep door-to-delivery in urban areas. What was not discussed was how the fed. gov't. would achieve that. Mail would have to be collected, sorted and placed into compartments. To maintain security of mail, a large building or a number of smaller buildings would need to be used. There would be costs for heating, lighting, taxes, etc. for these buildings. In short, would it not be more cost effective to keep door-to- door delivery in larger urban areas than trying to abolish it? Perhaps the feds have not done their homework prior to their choice to cancel this service. Union, don't look at the threat; but see if their goal is feasible.
Thank you Lise Vaugeois - MPP for Superior North riding. I have finally witnessed a true to heart politician that represents democracy. For some time now, I thought democracy was lost. Giving members of council the authority to remove another member is beyond their authority and skill-sets. Provincial court judges in all provinces have ruled that ever member of council is independent from another member. Whether that member agrees or disagrees with another member, it becomes the democratic choice of the deciding member. What is proposed before the Senate now is the dissolving of democracy, the decay of freedom of speech and the beginning of mobbing. Politics is not a team concept. It's the freedom of choice and expression without thought of punishment or retaliation. Perhaps those members of council who advocate to dismiss another member by majority rule, they be the ones removed from council. My sincere admiration to you MPP Lise Vaugeois. Your voice carries like a true leader.
Everyone is entitled to their personal ethics, but trying to change people to accept their ways of personal ethics certainly damages their own moral compass. Mother Earth has been around since creation, and Mother Earth has done well without any guardians. If fact, when Mother Earth releases her fury, their isn't a guardian in the world who can stop here.
Labour relations must be the most dreaded part of any job position. Whether you are an employee, employer or politician (at any level), if labour issues cannot be resolved in an amicable and timely way, then no one really wins. The sooner the better. If not sooner, then it would be the constituents of any politician that will end up shouldering the losses; one way or the other. That's a given. It's best to try and resolve labour issues that involve public interests at their earliest stage. The CIRB and LRBO are both professionally trained to handle these kinds of issues. Politicians, or any other party, are just trying to help steer employer and empolyee parties in the right direction so that decisions do not become too costly for anyone/everyone in the long run. Time costs money and so does the outcome.
It's good to see our law enforcement working together to take these criminals off the streets. I do have one concern. In the photo, I do not believe that all weapons at the scene of the crime are shown. I do recognize shotgun shells when I see them, but there is no shotgun pictured in the photo. This would suggest that there is another weapon at-large. Perhaps the Crown Attorney can look into this.
Our Canadian laws are very perplexing to say the least. In civil law, more specifically with respect to contract, marriage, divorce, separation, and wills, there is a latin term: "lex loci domicilii" - meaning law that governs the place where a person has established their permenant home or residence. To help fast track our criminal court system, perhaps criminal law could incorporate this expression to help our courts to make timely decisions for better civil purposes. Drug dealers come from southern Ontario, or other districts of Ontario, to conduct their illegal business. When caught, they should be tried in the same jurisdiction as their residence - not where they have committed the crime. It should not be this district's tax burden to cover the expenses of providing counsel, incarceration, courtroom time and court costs for a person who is not living in the same district where a crime has been commited. Some laws need to be changed. I believe this is one of them.
As a frequent visitor to T. Bay, and reading just about every comment posted, there are a couple of comments I would like to make. 1) City Hall conducted the jaywalking survey on Red River Rd. Did anyone from City Hall conduct a public opinion survey about the pedestrian lights? 2) Given fair notice of the gauntlet of traffic lights and pedestrian lights, I think that I will use a different exit from hwy. 11/17 to enter the city. Oliver Rd. can get me to the business section in PA just as easy.

In my previous comment, I stated some facts that took up 1 1/2 lines. These facts help bring perspective to my comment. Never at any time was it meant to be damaging to the reputation of the owners and their staff at K&A Variety. I live far from the city, and I also bring extra jerry cans to be filled and to be brought back home. As many have stated, K&A Variety is the best gas bar in the T. Bay district - price and service. I agree. My comment was based on safety and awareness for everyone. Not to entice frivilous TGD regulations. While I'm at this comment, perhaps the reporter could have done some homework before publishing her story. I'm sure that the Atikokan customer could have been removed from the story. My apologies to K&A Variety owner and staff for any issues that may spill over due to my previous comment.
Mr Powlowski, it is very easy to stand on the sidelines and condemn members of council in a riding that you do not have any jurisdiction in. You can point fingers, accuse people of wrongdoings and provide suggestions so long as issues deal with someone else's problems. If you do not want to help support decisions made by Thunder Bay council, that is your choice; but don't make things more difficult for those who have to make critical decisions in their riding. How dare you do that? If you are so concerned about people living in tents and wish for them to have better living accommodations, then bring your plans to your riding with your wallet opened. I'm sure that the Liberal party will support your decision. The problem here is, will your constituents support you in the next federal election? I doubt it. Please keep your unwelcomed comments to yourself, unless you are willing to take the bull by it's horns.
