What I find funny is the City is still actively trying to promote the downtown core as a safe, friendly environment to do business and shopping in. You want people to go downtown start by being proactive with the homeless. Nobody wants low income housing downtown but what did the city and government of BC do, build low income housing downtown and the city can’t understand why nobody wants to do business there.
I personally have no issue masking up but already I have met so many people angry at being told what to do I find it hilarious that these grown people are acting like spoiled, entitled children.
This is all fine and dandy however I have questions on if and when a plan is chosen1) how much will be offloaded onto the citizens because right now few are happy with increasing taxes year after year due to mostly mismanagement and rising costs that the city seems to be famous for.2) I would love an IMAX theatre here and if the people remember one was almost built several years ago here until costs and concerns that the population base could support it. Now we are close to if not having a population of 100,000 in the city it might be viable now3) lastly and most importantly the city MUST deal with the homeless issue first before any of this is built or it will be all for naught and we all know the city has a history of making bad decisions around this issue.
Knowing that the city council has a history of making blunderous mistakes especially with the visitor centre I fully expect MR. PG to be moved to some obscure part of the city then leaving city council wondering why nobody goes to see it.If you want people to see MR. PG make an intelligent decision and buy a section of the casino parking lot and place the statue there but then again refer to my first sentence.
I never ate there but walked by it whenever I was forced to go downtown and I lost count at how many times I had to step around the homeless many of whom were native and I never felt truly safe even walking with others and I always wondered how the businesses managed to stay open with these vagrants hanging around.Of course the bleeding hearts and citizens who don’t see this daily can’t understand my disgust of the street people and why nobody really likes going downtown. I fully expect a few other businesses to either move or close because of this.
City council and the city managers are going to be under a fine tooth comb over this and while I agree the pool requires repairs and upgrades this is also a bad time for asking for more money especially after we tax payers were hit with large Tax hikes last year.I fully expect the pool to go over budget because of delays and costs going up again and city council will be in the hot seat as we all know they are completely n the dark about realities.
The downfall started 12 yrs ago when the addicts and homeless setup shop at the 7\11. I used to go here regularly for morning coffee as it is relatively close to where I live. The change was gradual but it got to the point that we would help the staff move people who had shot up in the bathroom or decided to OD in the restaurant. It got to be so bad that emergency services was there just about every day. After the 7/11 closed its doors on 20th it was literally overnight that the addicts, dealers and homeless disappeared from 20th but the damage had been done and the writing was on the wall that the A&W was on its way out as it never recovered business that it lost. How many more businesses are we going to lose before somebody gets some balls and deals with the homeless, addicts and dealers.
There are many aspects of the budget I agree with but as a tax payer of the city I still feel like I’ve been raked over the coals and another pound of flesh has been ripped from my body.
There is a lot to be said here from government mismanagement to the forest companies being greedy to the natives wanting their slice of the pie and environmentalists wanting to shut down heavy industry. Nothing is working in the forest industries favour right now and unless a major change happens it will get much worse down the road
It is important that any public office keep everything transparent and above board so having members of the public and media there keeps the process fair. This is especially true when discussing anything around money whether it be collecting, spending or increasing/decreasing fees and so on because we have the legal right to know how public officials are spending or collecting these monies. If you feel uncomfortable with having media there then it sends a message that you don’t want things known.
What I find funny is how nobody is talking about the heatwaves and how most of the bears natural food was either limited or destroyed by heat and other causes leaving them very hungry. Bears also woke up early this year due to early snow melt and many of them I suspect already died to starvation as again limited food resources this spring. I would be very surprised to see a large amount of bears this year in the region.Of course I expect the Disney Princesses to be out in force saying things could have been done differently. Relocation would be ideal but once a bear gets humanized it is near impossible to break them of that trait and eventually leads to the bear being destroyed. Also relocating a bear is costly and there is no garantee of success. I wonder how many people would be willing to shell out to relocate 600 bears a year province wide.
The Petrocans in town always seem to do this every few months where they’ll Jack their prices up and see if anyone follows their lead then after a day or so lower it to their competitors prices.
I wanted to attend but unfortunately I am a shift worker and it fell on my night shift however with that being said I am still happy the meeting was held but with all the attention focused on moccasin flats other needed discussions about the homeless issue were ignored due to time constraints. With that being said more action and less talk is needed when it comes to dealing with the homeless issue and the city needs to stop miring itself IMO in red tape because all the city is doing is upsetting the taxpayers with talk and little action.
It’s a race to see who will destroy the forest industry first The Government, the environmentalists or the natives.Good place not to do business in right now
Another fine example of lack of the city not understanding tourism. Remember the fiasco after they moved from 16/97 to the corner of 15th and Victoria then when that didn’t pan out they moved to 1st Ave and homeless territory. Now they have moved to an area with no parking for RVs, travel trailers or basically anything else in a very congested area.Glad to see my expectations have been lived down to.
The bathroom issue raises its ugly head yet again and yet again the root cause is the homeless and street walkers who will use these facilities as a place to sleep, shoot up and do business in. How about figuring out what to do about the groups of homeless that roam the downtown day and night and maybe then maybe revisit the bathroom issue. Until then this group of people will continue to use and abuse any facility that the city puts up and we taxpayers get to see our money wasted yet again on another fruitless venture.
No matter the century Politicians are all the same…promise us the moon then we wait and wait for something that never comes. The election is less than 4 months away and he like every other politician is looking for votes. Yes we need the surgical tower we needed it 10 years ago when I remember it first being talked about and since then all I’ve heard is empty promises. Colour me unimpressed.
While the way the police were involved was done wrong I do support that they were there. People want to believe meetings are safe and organized but I know from personal experience when emotions get involved common sense goes out the window and tempers flare. Don’t believe me there is ample evidence available on YouTube, social media and news clippings from not only within BC but right across Canada and the world. Green space is a hot button topic in PG. and I’ve seen people on either side of the line lose their temper in public.I personally have no issue with the police being in attendance either in plain clothes or uniform and I’d feel safer with them around.
One of my friends wife got nailed twice in the same day for using an electronic device while driving. Not only did she get nailed with two fines but 8 points on her license, was referred to ICBC for driver re-education and her insurance went up.All said and done with fines and driver re-education she was nailed with close to $4000 in fines and fees and was told if she received another fine for same offence she would lose her license for a set period of time and would have to retake the driver retraining course on her own dime. She is still mad about it because she got caught and felt she was unfairly targeted. She got caught and had to pay the consequences because she won’t obey the rules of th3 road.
