My sense is that crimes against small business simply go unreported. Why bother? Nothing happens to the criminals. We’ve been abandoned. We’re on our own.

“Crown prosecutor Stephanie Bowick sought a 30-day jail sentence and one-year probation, based on Golar’s criminal record. Bowick said he had breached 25 orders, undertakings and probation and was convicted five previous times for theft. His last time in jail was 2017, a 120-day sentence for assault causing bodily harm.“

Very sad, yet understandable.

Sadly, we cannot rely on the police or the government to protect us. We’re on our own.

Very lucky nobody has died. I suspect, sadly, it’s only a matter of time. Why no new treatment beds?

Our city’s population has been stagnant for 3-decades. The forest industry is getting creamed. Major industry is shrinking. Good paying, private sector jobs are on the endangered-species list and city staff is proposing an increase in FTEs and a tax increase 3x the rate of inflation. Really?

This is a great idea. Just a thought, but rather than the city buying all the cameras, why doesn’t the city offer 5-year interest free loans to business owners downtown? The annual payment could be folded into their annual tax bills. Much less cost to the city and the (likely) high uptake will get more cameras operational, sooner.

Currently, inflation is 1.8%. A 7.13% increase in taxes is nothing to be proud of.

Well done Mrs. Mahoney. Good for you. A trip of a lifetime for these young people. You’re a terrific teacher. Keep up the good work.

Not mentioned in the article - a sure fire way to not get killed from bad drugs is to “not do drugs”. If you need help getting clean please get help as soon as possible.

The RCMP Auxiliary can play a useful role in supporting the full-time RCMP members. Considering the manpower challenges facing the RCMP, I’m not sure this it’s a good idea to say “no” to more uniformed support.
