Good Lord, the brain trust has been talking about revitalization for as long as I’ve lived here (2006) & probably before that. We’ve seen our taxes & fees increase while our leaders have spent millions with little to no result. No one from the burbs will go downtown when it’s festering with living zombies affected by the well intentioned & poorly executed drug addiction policies. Who wants to go & drop $1-200 on a meal & come out & find a window busted out & their car rummaged through? Who wants to take their kids to a farmers market & see someone leaving a deuce on the side of a building? Or walk over a used needle? Or see one of these lost souls sleeping in a doorway? Not to mention we have a LOT of critical infrastructure (plumbing) that needs to be dealt with before we look to spend $ on a vanity project.
20+ years + untold millions of dollars for downtown revitalization & downtown PG reminds me of Resident Evil. How many people have to be threatened, assaulted or blown up before the CYA bureaucrats at City Hall (including the mayor & council) actually do something to clean up streets? Do we have wait for someone to get killed? I wonder if these characters started hanging out in Yu's, Babicz's, Sampson's or Bennett's neighbourhoods, how fast would the problem be dealt with?
Well since we are looking at "nice to have's" like moving Mr PG downtown to the tune of 100's of thousands of dollars, that must mean that the parkade debacle has been paid for, our sewer and fresh water pipes must all be replaced and working fine, and the mess at the LPBE has been solved. Awesome! Oh wait...It's not??? Well then what in the world are we doing looking at what can only be described as a make work vanity project? Does anyone really think that putting Mr PG downtown will magically solve the issues in the downtown core? Give me a break!
Good Lord. For this the city follows the letter of the law, but for a building blowing up & almost killing one of their staff? A city manager ok's a $22million dollar over run without telling anyone & gets a golden parachute? A city councilor posts pics of him wearing police gear after being told not to? A mayor can't keep his budgets in line? But cats.......why are we paying for this sort of nonsense? Ok fine, lets deal with cats. I'm sure everything will fall into line once we fine Garfield for stalking lasagna outdoors without proper ID.
Good Lord above. We haven't paid for the $22million dollar over run on the parkade, we have a large nut to crack in the Canfor pool & now this well intentioned advocacy group wants to increase our taxes once again for bear proof garbage cans. We have to draw the line somewhere. We have to divide our purchases into "need to haves" & "nice to haves," & sorry to say, bear proof garbage cans are not a need to have. Lots of people I know store their trash in a shed until trash day because that's the price we pay for living up north. Now I can hear people saying "not everyone has a shed," and that's true, but if you're asking all of us to increase our taxes once again because some aren't able to secure their trash, I'm sorry, that dog won't hunt. People need to take responsibility for their trash. I've seen some who don't have a shed drop about $30 on ratchet straps and they haven't had their trash invaded by bears. If you can secure a bicycle, you can secure a trash can.
This has been an issue known for years & finally it's getting some attention. We have pipes that need replacing, and like it or not, we are looking at another tax increase. Time for City Hall to tighten their belts. No more raises, no more nice new buildings, no more junkets, no more lunch budgets, no more worrying about the needs of the few down & outers & no more $22 million dollar parkades until we take care of the infrastructure we have now. Water in our taps & flushing toilets are an absolute necessity. Sorry City staff, you may have to look at layoffs. The horror! It's time for some hard decisions. Question is, will the current Mayor & council finally grow up and make these hard & sure to be unpopular decisions or will they be more focused on their political careers & distract us with Cariboo Rocks the North?
Talk about closing the gate after the horses have escaped. This mayor & council have sat on their thumbs for 4 years while people in the downtown core have had to become adept at avoiding used needles, feces, blood and vomit. Now that we are about 6 months away from civic elections, we are all supposed to forget the last four years of increasing crime, ballooning expenses and even discussions about a 35% raise, because of a letter? How dumb does Yu et al think we are?
Interesting. I wonder which company will be willing to invest millions into a plant in a city with crumbling water and electrical infrastructure, a downtown core that resembles Resident Evil & an increasingly bloated bureaucracy at City Hall where the councilors apparently feel it appropriate to get a 37% raise because people are mean to them on Facebook & the staff don't actually have to worry about results for the taxpayer. Freeport? Eagle? Pacific? Profab? Modulaire?
Businesses look to Mayor & council, who mostly cannot be bothered to show up & those that do blame others & nothing gets done. The talking heads on social media, who for the most part aren't homeowners & are using PG as a stop gap to their next step up the bureaucratic ladder closer to the City, insult those that actually want change, calling them all sorts of vile names. The taxpayers elect a new batch to council who pay lip service, call for more studies which costs more time & money, on and on it goes. How many businesses need to be razed and/or city workers needs to nearly killed before we actually do something? The frustration is building & its only a matter of time before some vigilante(s) get their load on & does(do) something stupid. What will be the reaction from our absent Mayor and mostly absent council be then? Chances are they will have pulled a Green/Soltis move & leave in the middle of the night.
Both the provincial & federal governments are in full damage control due to their galactically stupid idea of supplying opiates to addicts & now are turning teachers, administrators & potentially other students into makeshift paramedics. I wonder what is the source of the opiates that these students are taking & I also wonder who is supplying these kits to the provincial government? I also wonder how much furor that would result if Bibles were made available for free on these campuses?
An economic “full court press” based on 60+ year old infrastructure. Another shining example of incompetence of the elected boobs we call Mayor & Council.
So naloxone kits will be available in all schools. I cannot imagine how to explain to a 6 year old why they need a naloxone kit in their schools. I wonder what the reaction would be if say condoms were made readily available to all students.....or a Bible...
Wow. Burn down a business, put 50 people out of work, $1.8mil in damages & max sentence is 14 years. I will take the under on a 8 year sentence for this guy.
