Two issues here. The site is surrounded by water. There’s enough of a problem with marginalized people drowning in our waterways. We don’t need to make the problem worse. Next, it is a fact that several marginalized people have substance abuse issues. The LCBO is just across the river. The store is already the most dangerous liquor store to shop at in the city with high rates of theft and violence against staff. Placing a high volume of people with substance addiction so close will result in a significant increase in violent crime at the LCBO itself.
This is clearly a situation where identifying the evicted individual would protect the community and other landlords. The safety of the community is not protected when individuals like this aren’t identified.
There are already several American based retailers that operate Canadian divisions in Thunder Bay such as Best Buy, Home Depot, and a large percentage of franchise restaurants. The market will decide if they are to survive. Costco, with Canadian operations based in BC will have done considerable market studies when the day comes that they decide to open in this city. I would love to see Costco here. However, I’m already imagining the list of those who will loudly oppose this: Shane Judge because he doesn’t want anything new in this city; The Power Centre because it might impact their profits and prevent their local ownership from spending local revenue on weekend trips to concerts in the USA; the Chamber of Commerce which rightly wants to protect local small businesses, but also ignores the economic imprint of Costco in the form of income paid to hundreds of workers and taxes paid to the city. It’s a battle that’s been ongoing against Costco going back to the 1990’s. NIMBY!!
Although I’m not a gambler, I don’t understand how this can happen when I’ve always heard the odds favour the house. There must be some gross mismanagement happening somewhere. Makes me think this is how they open the door to mob financing and involvement.
Nice to be able to take your drink to your seat, but allowing sales until 30-minutes before the end of the show just encourages fans to get up and climb across a row of others to get to the bar during the performance. Allow the drink at the seat but suspend service during the performance.
In general the public never felt safe using the Marina Park pedestrian cross over. They never felt safe using the pedestrian bridge on Brown St., nor the subway at Cherry’s Corner. I can’t see this proposed bridge being anymore safe or popular. So just skip developing the trail in this area. Direct pedestrians to follow existing street routes to get around the area in question and save a ton of money. Please!
It would be decent if you identified the business in this situation. Otherwise, I’m inclined to believe the crook was ripping off the LCBO. Sounds like a typical incident at that location. I’m
So, the whole purpose of this drone show and luring people to the waterfront was to essentially play a fancy commercial about the airport??? Pretty scuzzy.
We really need this program here. But I have doubts that students will return to this area after finishing the last two years of the program in Guelph. The entire four years needs to be done here, or switch it around so the last two years are done here.
The city will need to redesign the entrance/exit to Innova to handle the increased truck traffic and customers. When Costco built their North Kildonan store in Winnipeg, they were required to cover the cost of redesigning and rebuilding the streets around their location, which they did without any noticeable objections. The city needs to get an agreement on this before allowing any construction to begin.
How upset will these same residents be when their school is closed due to low enrollment. I feel their issues are more to do with culture and class than anything else.
Instead of taking away green space, use vacant property acquired through tax seizures, or use some of the many empty/derelict properties on Simpson Street and elsewhere in the city.
“Has Been Fest!” When was the last time any of these acts charted? Some don’t even include their original singers (Trooper). I guess it’s reflective of our older demographic, but some of us old timers also enjoy more current acts that are also likely affordable. Not motivated to spend $150 - $300 on this line up.
Political leaders who visit the city on a Friday, especially in the afternoon/evening, never make major new announcements because it won’t get network attention heading into a weekend. Even when they do visit Thunder Bay earlier in the week , they’re usually just re-announcing previous announcements. It’s nice they visit, and we can’t say they don’t visit, but their visits are usually yawners that are more about attending party fundraisers than surprising us with exciting new funding for local projects. There. Just wrote your story for you. Save your time and report on something more meaningful.
He is a one issue talker who was part of a climate change denying government under Harper, who continues to be a climate change denier; was part of Harper’s method of not allowing government ministries to have their own communications teams as was the tradition pre-Harper, and who continues to gag his party members from speaking or voting their own minds. Totally lacking in transparency. Will the real Poilievre please show himself - the original, authentgeeky looking guy that existed when he was elected party leader? Or the character created dince then who has completely changed his appearance snd created a fake personality hoping to woo more MAGA type voters. Just can’t trust this guy. His record and time served under Harper proves it. What do they say? A leopard can’t change its spots. Or…a wolf in sheep’s clothing. A few months into a Poilivre term and most people will be demanding chsnge…again.
We went Saturday afternoon and the place was essentially dead. The two ribbers each had three sets of grills, but traffic was so light, they were each only using one grill. No lines at most of the local food booths. Watched one local food vendor and in the half hour plus we were there , not even one person approached their booth. Could outline several more issues, but I’ll leave that for others. Just saying…turnout was very poor.
Thunder Bay has one of the largest police forces, per capita, in the entire country. Yet it’s police model has never worked. Having lived in larger cities including Calgary, I noticed the difference between Crime Prevention and Law Enforcement as soon as I moved back here. Calgary largely programs its police to conduct Crime Prevention. This includes aggressive proactive tactics like targeted blitzes that may vary from cracking down on public intoxication, to enforcing jay walking, and themed traffic enforcement blitzes. They have cops walking the beat which allows them to interact with anyone on the street. This helps with intelligence gathering. Our police respond to crimes (some of the time) after they’ve already happened. This forces our officers to be the bad guys in the eyes of the criminal element, and their poor response times takes away any public confidence or respect that should exist. Bring in leadership with major city experience.
