OPINION: 'Guelph has become a cold and mean place in recent weeks'

The ONLY time I ever felt unsafe downtown was on St. Patrick's Day when a surge of students in various states of intoxication and undress swarmed from one side of Wyndham to the other on a diagonal headed for the concert theater with no regard for people or traffic.

Being in a park with a property line shared with a school does not mean a person is "beside a school"

Let's go Guelph! Get RCM to the finish line and allow more people the dignity of a safe place to get clean!

Operations - heating, cooling, electricity, water & wastewater, taxes, equipment (fridges, freezers, stoves, washers & dryers), repairs and replacementsCome on Alec, you have a brain, use it well - operations & administration NOT ONLY SALARIES Staff training needs to happen on the regular tooAnd all the items used to keep things clean, plus dishes and computers and bins to store people's stuffHave you ever even gone in to a day shelter to see what goes in to the operating of one? Tables, chairs, things for people to do while there like foozball and puzzles and board games and cardsNot all of us that access services at RCM live rough, most of us pay over 70% of our income for inadequate shelter so this is our community and where we eatMaybe come visit and have a meal with us sometime

@1SPOOK - by removing the plowing of bike lanes, there is NO PLOWING TO THE CURB since those painted lines often run between the live lane of vehicular traffic and the curb. Your argument therefore supports Coun. Gibson's reasoning.

Oh Trevor! So incredibly sorry this has happenedTo Orillia residents, Trevor Lee has been an exceptional DCAO in Guelph and I will as sad to see him leave, sorry you didn't get a chance to benefit from his level of professionalism and dedication.

Hopefully the City will speak with the Lawn Bowling Club as at least one member there would like to see the Club moved across Gordon and have the current building and lands be a start to a Friendship Centre at the confluence of our Two Rivers.

If the Provincial government would stop downloading things to the municipal government then the tax rate would be closer to inflation. When millions of dollars of Development Charges are clawed back so Developers can make more profit, the existing tax base is left to pay for the shortfall and property taxes are the only way municipalities can do that.

Guess your spell check doesn't work? Here ya go - Idioms and PhrasesGLUTTON for punishment - Someone who habitually takes on burdensome or unpleasant tasks or unreasonable amounts of work. For example, Rose agreed to organize the church fair for the third year in a row—she's a glutton for punishment . This expression originated as a glutton for work in the late 1800s, punishment being substituted about a century later.

As a former addiction treatment facility employee who has sat with clients going through the agony of withdrawal, I know both sides of the equation are required. CTS were the start of a good program to help people ready to take the painful journey to being substance free. If this government had added the HART Hubs to the equation, we would have seen progress in helping more people move to a sustainable future. By removing CTS all that will happen is more people will die from poisoned supply.

And that right there is the issue - privilege Driving is a privilege, mobility is a right - transit is about mobility and motility

Agree! And have a very difficult time understanding how this "progressive" model works for individuals with Traumatic Acquired Brain Inury. The noted protocols for dealing with "behaviours" is inadequately explained for this specific group who are incapable of even recognizing when changes in behaviour have happened. Too many of our houseless neighbours live with ABI with no treatment options and no ability to do anything if they experience behavioural challenges. I question how well trained Stepping Stone staff are to deal with the extremely difficult realities for people who live with ABI.

The hub-and-spoke system we have is the issue - too many uni-directional circuitous routes, with many traveling the exact same roads to reach out from the hubs - not everyone needs to go downtown to get where they need to be

Mayor excluded - The three council members in the photos ABSOLUTELY support Royal City Mission and our unhoused neighbours 💜Linda Busutill works to complete tax returns at RCM for anyone who needs it - she and her volunteers work with everyone who asks, be it a simple return or year and years of complicated back taxesErin Caton and her spouse support RCM and YDGF in many ways - Kate Nixon loved Erin and all the work they do for our most marginalised neighboursPhil Allt has always supported RCM and through Breezy Breakfast may be providing even more opportunities to support our downtown service seekers come September @Bonspeil - maybe you want to understand whom you are disparaging before inserting your foot in your mouth

@Soccer Mom, it's only a few of the City Councillors who don't support the Guelpgh Tiny Homes Coalition. If they could direct Staff to "make it so" they would. Wellington County is the Provincially Mandared Service Provider for Social Services and Housing in Guelph, the City of Guelph just hands over a cheque at budget time every year for the County to provide the services. My read from the meeting, Cam Guthrie and Dominique O'Rourke are supportive, Linda Busuttil is reservedly supportive, Cathy Downer is vehemently opposed, County Councillor B-whatever is confused and doesn't get it at all, Warden Lennox needs to be hit over the head with a ahammer to understand that the letter from the City to the Committe was an ENDORSEMENT, and County CAO is not even the tiniest bit supportive of giving an answer to "if not this then what" until September, which is far too late.As a 57 year old homeless person, I can say definitely, I would rather live in a structured encampment than a shelter.

@Susan Watson, unfortunately, good ol' Dougie let the Minister mess with stuff and once the appeals are all done, 18 stories will be the norm downtown, unless it messes with the view corridor of course@Matt likes Guelph - the two dozen people at the walking tour held by the City recently proves you 100% in the wrong on that

Unfortunately, By-Law doesn't have a choice. If a complaint is made, they have to investigate and when then investigate, they have to follow the by-laws. There is discretion for the inspector, and there is opinion that can be questionable (my neighbour had a complaint and the opinions of two different inspectors varied widely), Mary is taking the best route to ensure she never has to face this kind of idiot again. I will be registering to delegate in favour of the application when it comes in front of Committee of Adjustment. If you can be available to delegate by video or phone, please register. If you can't please write a letter!

RENTERS PAY PROPERTY TAX EVERY SINGLE MONTH! All this talk about the "taxpayer" without including every single tenant in the city is missing at least 30% of the Guelph constituents.

Working on helping that change by providing a workshop for everyone who wants to delegate on an issue and doesn't know how or is afraid!

It's HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ... read their mandate to understand what they do to house people. If there are even any businesses left in that old block, there is plenty of space everywhere for businesses to move.
