OPINION: 'Guelph has become a cold and mean place in recent weeks'

The ONLY time I ever felt unsafe downtown was on St. Patrick's Day when a surge of students in various states of intoxication and undress swarmed from one side of Wyndham to the other on a diagonal headed for the concert theater with no regard for people or traffic.

Hopefully the City will speak with the Lawn Bowling Club as at least one member there would like to see the Club moved across Gordon and have the current building and lands be a start to a Friendship Centre at the confluence of our Two Rivers.

If the Provincial government would stop downloading things to the municipal government then the tax rate would be closer to inflation. When millions of dollars of Development Charges are clawed back so Developers can make more profit, the existing tax base is left to pay for the shortfall and property taxes are the only way municipalities can do that.

Guess your spell check doesn't work? Here ya go - Idioms and PhrasesGLUTTON for punishment - Someone who habitually takes on burdensome or unpleasant tasks or unreasonable amounts of work. For example, Rose agreed to organize the church fair for the third year in a row—she's a glutton for punishment . This expression originated as a glutton for work in the late 1800s, punishment being substituted about a century later.

As a former addiction treatment facility employee who has sat with clients going through the agony of withdrawal, I know both sides of the equation are required. CTS were the start of a good program to help people ready to take the painful journey to being substance free. If this government had added the HART Hubs to the equation, we would have seen progress in helping more people move to a sustainable future. By removing CTS all that will happen is more people will die from poisoned supply.

@Susan Watson, unfortunately, good ol' Dougie let the Minister mess with stuff and once the appeals are all done, 18 stories will be the norm downtown, unless it messes with the view corridor of course@Matt likes Guelph - the two dozen people at the walking tour held by the City recently proves you 100% in the wrong on that

Unfortunately, By-Law doesn't have a choice. If a complaint is made, they have to investigate and when then investigate, they have to follow the by-laws. There is discretion for the inspector, and there is opinion that can be questionable (my neighbour had a complaint and the opinions of two different inspectors varied widely), Mary is taking the best route to ensure she never has to face this kind of idiot again. I will be registering to delegate in favour of the application when it comes in front of Committee of Adjustment. If you can be available to delegate by video or phone, please register. If you can't please write a letter!

@Soccer Mom, it's only a few of the City Councillors who don't support the Guelpgh Tiny Homes Coalition. If they could direct Staff to "make it so" they would. Wellington County is the Provincially Mandared Service Provider for Social Services and Housing in Guelph, the City of Guelph just hands over a cheque at budget time every year for the County to provide the services. My read from the meeting, Cam Guthrie and Dominique O'Rourke are supportive, Linda Busuttil is reservedly supportive, Cathy Downer is vehemently opposed, County Councillor B-whatever is confused and doesn't get it at all, Warden Lennox needs to be hit over the head with a ahammer to understand that the letter from the City to the Committe was an ENDORSEMENT, and County CAO is not even the tiniest bit supportive of giving an answer to "if not this then what" until September, which is far too late.As a 57 year old homeless person, I can say definitely, I would rather live in a structured encampment than a shelter.

Working on helping that change by providing a workshop for everyone who wants to delegate on an issue and doesn't know how or is afraid!

RENTERS PAY PROPERTY TAX EVERY SINGLE MONTH! All this talk about the "taxpayer" without including every single tenant in the city is missing at least 30% of the Guelph constituents.

Most transit users are taxpayers, or are you only counting property owners and discounting the fact that renters pay a higher mill rate than single family dwellings? Riders pay real user fees at $3.25/rideUniversity students have fares subsidized by the university, high school students recently started receiving city subsidy to travel on transit and children under 5 have always been free to my knowledgeHow do you feel about the state of the roads in the city? Do you realize that the more personal vehicles are on the road, the greater the frequency of repair? This is the exact reason that the Alberta government requires the vast majority of people to take busses from Fort McMurray out to the fields - more vehicles equals more deterioration of infrastructure and more frequent repairs. We need MORE FREE TRANSIT

It's HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ... read their mandate to understand what they do to house people. If there are even any businesses left in that old block, there is plenty of space everywhere for businesses to move.

When the province is involved things take longer ... in 1974, when my parents were looking to buy in Burlington, one place they loved in the north was not chosen because they were told the 403 extension was going in "soon" ... I had finished highschool and moved out on my own before the "407" was built ... I started grade 3 in Burlington How long have they been promising the new Hwy 7?

You are confusing the Citu Council and the County ... the majority of Guelph City Councillors support the Guelph Tiny Homes Coalition initiative. Due to the Provincially Mandated position of Wellington County as the Social Services and Housing Provider for Guelph, City Council is literally NOT ALLOWED to bring this initiatives to reality.

Do you mean the City should divulge that they are offering? The commitment comment was from Mr. O'Brien "“The City remains committed to the collective bargaining process. We have appreciated the discussions we’ve had with ATU over the last few months," said Stephen O’Brien, the City’s acting-general manager of human resources, in an emailed statement to GuelphToday. "Our focus is on continuing productive discussions toward a successfully bargained collective agreement.”"

Mattamy can eat the loss ... Heritage is more important than the ridiculous profits they would rake in on the 200 to 500 new MARKET RATE HOMES ... there is nothing AFFORDABLE in the Mattamy profit plan

The contract can be renewed without any lawsuit. If you had actually bothered to read the Staff Recommendations or the contract, both of which were published for anyone to access, your fallacious comments would be unnecessary
