Herr Drump's delusions of grandeur are just one more indication of how fried his brain is Plating everything in fake gold is another. Canada will not bend.
Ah, there is nothing quite like trying to start a business and increase the number of people spending money in a small town. Then comes the cries of "Why doesn't anybody want to move here/do business her???" when nothing gets done and nobody moves there and some people leave.
This is just one more example of the city and council not giving equal attention to its rural obligations as it does to core "fluff" projects. Reading what is being paid in municipal taxes really highlights how they are not getting value for money. We pay less in the middle of the city and have pretty decent maintenance and services. To me it looks like the city is using the rural tax money to subsidize city projects and maintenance. Seriously council and city staff, play fair!! Put on of those fluff projects on hold and FIX A NECESSITY!!!
Andrew Koski, the Soo is not Toronto, it's not even Sudbury. Sephora is a luxury brand. The majority of people in the Soo struggle to afford the necessities of life. Even Bath and Body Works merchandise is out of the reach for many. I just don't see how Sephora will have enough buyers to turn a profit.
I can guarantee that if the city had the personnel and equipment to meet what many citizens expect/demand those same citizens would be screaming bloody murder over what it would do to their taxes. I do have one suggestion for the city to consider....in the years when we have an easy winter, any money that was saved from what was budgeted should be put in a "slush fund" specifically for use in the crazy snow years rather than using it for some " wouldn't it be nice to have" fluff project.
Awhile back, the city issued an outline of their full list of the timing of various forms of road maintenance that was posted on Soo today. I laughed. Their time frames might be OK in a different climate but it certainly isn't for Northern Ontario. The plan certainly hasn't kept pace with developments over the years. The amount of $$ budgeted for roads is way too low. Between inadequate maintenance budget and a liability structure that is majorly skewed in the ciy' s favour, the Soo's motorists are S.O.L.
The short-sightedness of this beyond infuriating. We have seen what happens when public functions are handed over to private for-profit companies. Putting the health and safety of Ontarians in private hands is a recipe for disaster. But, hey, what's a few more sick people or dead people?
We already have issues with thefts of this kind of products....given what I read in other "Village" venues, it will only amp y up even more with a Sephora outlet here!!
I firmly believe that another thing that has to change is the ridiculous timeline expectations put on drivers by the goods shipper and recipient and the trucking company. It puts pressure on the driver to skirt the laws and regulations.
Thank you for this amazing Remembrance flag flying proudly on the Soo's skyline. Your Canadian flag is visible from so many areas of both Soo's....this one will be too and appreciated. Patriotism is alive and well.Karen Grant
It will take years/decades to improve Highways 11 and 17. What to do in the meantime??? My suggestion is to have more law enforcement and ministry officers on the roads 24/7. Too many truckers are just plain dangerous....but part of the blame has to be placed at the ridiculous schedules they have to keep and insufficient training. Idiot truckers have always been in the system. But since our rail system has dumped all those goods they used to carry onto the highway system, the danger for average citizens has grown exponentially . I've come I-I close more than once of being a statistic because truckers were being idiots......and their bosses were partially to blame . Between insufficient training, ridiculous schedules, not enough enforcement and inadequate roads and a provincial government that makes anything past Sudbury an afterthought, NOTHING will change.
You couldn't pay me enough to go to the USA, especially to Florida. It is not a question of safety although it is a cause of concern. It IS a question of monetarily supporting a country threatening Canada and a state that whole-heartedly supports Trump and has a governor who has similar aspirations and beliefs. I am disappointed that Crime Stoppers chose this as one of the prize destinations.
I don't know why anybody would be surprised by this. The days of executives sharing in the pain are long gone.....one only has to read the business pages to know that. There are many descriptive words for executive compensation......obscene and immoral being two of the many.
It truly boggles the mind that Northern Ontario highways 17 and 11 are still so bad. 50 years ago we moved to Saskatoon for my husband's work. At that time I had never been further west than Montreal River. We crossed into Manitoba and it wasn't just the terrain that changed dramatically. 30 years later we went out west via the USA and camo home on our side. Crossing into Ontario I was once again startled by the difference in the quality of the highway. If I was a member of the Ontario government, I would be mortified that our part of the Trans-Canada highway is so sub-par.
This is definitely the worst I have seen our roads, whether they be main roads or side streets. The cheap poorer quality filler they are using to patch is garbage and most fixes are knocked out by the next day. We are paying for years of subpar maintenance that is done on the cheap and is poorly executed. ...I haven't seen hardly any patches that last more than i or 2 days. And, finally, the schedule for street maintenance and replacement is a joke...it might be ok if better materials were used and we lived in a different climate.
We fondly call the snow dump on the old Downey site on Bruce St. " Mount Bruce." I've seen some pretty impressive mounds over the years but this time it is truly epic!!
Non-local property owners have no incentive to maintain their properties. The outfits hired for "property management" have no incentives to maintain the apartments. They get their money regardless....and I sometimes suspect they get a bonus for how much they don't spend. Are there bad tenants? Yes. Are all tenants bad tenants? No. The Landlord/tenant act needs more bite and more enforcement. If buildings aren't properly maintained , both the owner and property management get penalized. The division of the ministry should have the authority to send in repair crews after a specified period of non-compliance and the cost added to the owners/property managements tax bill. Are there bad tenants? Absolutely. But I know too many good people subjected to this nonsense with the owner/property manager painting tenants as the cause of the deterioration. The ministry and the city need to step up. And, oh yeah, when/ why did public health step back from health inspections?;
The powers that be who hold the purse-strings-i.e. provincial governments have a LOOOOONG history of ignoring/playing hardball with female-dominated professions. Teachers didn't see improvements until men started entering the profession in larger numbers. Chronic underfunding and lack of manageable nurse/patient ratios will not improve until the men in power get their heads on straight. I became a nurse just as the profession started organizing and demanding better pay. I was in Saskatoon when the nurses went on strike (it only took 2 days)....because of connections in the media I learned that the whole increase we were fighting for was in the preliminary budget-the minister told the negotiators to stall to see if the nurses would actually strike. He got a surprise. It is very sad 50+ years on, it is still happening.
This made my day. As a later student at SCI with some of the same teachers still there, I can easily picture everything he talks about. Thank you for sharing it again!!
The whole cabinet is hand-picked by Herr Drumpf devotees...the GOP control the the senate, the house, the supreme court. NOT ONE PERSON has the ethics and bravery to do anything. The big orange is dangerous because he has no moral boundaries, acts on impulse and is uneducated and dumb as a stump. If anybody actually believes that he would stop making threats if we caved and agreed to his present demands, they are gravely mistaken !!! It would be a never ending round of more demands that would totally favour the USA.
