Champlain debate goes national, 'As it should,' says councillor

He studied Indigenous family dynamics and noted in his writings that Indigenous people were far more obedient when separated from their children… That doesn’t exactly sound very “friendly”, now does it?

Friendly reminder; The Mayor of Orillia arguably went against the will of Council after a 6- 3 vote to keep the monument in storage and allow the next elected Council to revisit the issue at a later date. The City of Orillia’s democratic process was fractured right before our eyes with this unilateral decision by the Mayor who was highly aware of the controversy and harm that decision would create. Members of Council, City Staff, Rama First Nation, and the Huron- Wendat Nation were not informed of the decision to relocate the monument to the park for “storage.” Parks Canada still holds the title for the plot of land the monument was placed on and were also not notified of the decision. This was not at all aligned with truth and reconciliation efforts. This was an assault on our democracy at the expense of Indigenous people. This was never just about Champlain or a monument.

Nobody is giving me “special weight” in this issue. There are people however who have been paying attention and know that I explored every other option to open this conversation in a respectful way prior to this act. It was illegal and I welcome the accountability that comes with it, but there are many others involved here who have yet to be held accountable for their actions, the mayor included.
