Has anyone else heard that busloads of metro Vancouver homeless folks are being sent to us to help fill the motels purchased at those high prices. Have to think these people are either unemployed or unemployible. Even though compensation will be paid, I can't see anything good coming from this. Confirmation anybody? Press, politicians, civil servants?
I worked holiday relief at Hudson's Bay as a teenager when it was downtown where City Furniture now is. A nice store with big cafeteria. Also downtown was Northern Hardware, Kresge's (with a diner), Eaton's (I think where Bi-Rire is), Sears on 3rd across from 3rd Ave Pharmacy, Woolworth's also on 3rd, McLeod's on 4th, Stedman's in Spruceland (also with a dining area), Woodward's at the original Parkwood Mall had a restaurant and a Food Floor. Always looked forward to the Catalogues from Eaton's and Sears, especially the Christmas ones. This was all before Pine Center was built. My, but things have sure changed, and I'm not sure for the better.
You can add youngsters to the list, as some parents are not comfortable letting the kid(s) take the debit card. Easier to give each of them some cash, especially if they are going with their friends' families to the game. Organize the line-ups better by putting up serpentine-like crowd control stanchions like you see at airport security and customs. There used to be more smaller kiosks selling popcorn, coffee etc and bring back the remote sellers (intermission only) to go up and down the aisles selling goodies. 50/50 sellers were commonplace during intermission wandering through the stands. All this may help. I think when the crowds were much smaller the organazional thinking took a back seat and with the numbers back up there should be some serious thought to alleviate some of the congestion. GO COUGARS!!!
The second fire was at Alward Place, a BC Housing/Northern Health place where everyone was evacuated in the middle of the night without the aid of the elevators. Seniors, some in their 90's, had to assemble outside for about an hour. Something needs to be done.
I could very well be wrong, but, there may be a number of pilfered items visible in many of the photos. Maybe I'm just jumping to conclusions. I guess I shouldn't assume things like that.
So ALL motorized transportation needs insurance and a licensed driver. Let's review. Gasoline, diesel or electric trucks, cars and motorcycles - yes. Regular unicycles, bicycles, tricycles, skateboards, scooters - no. How about electric scooters, e-bikes, electric wheelchairs, powered skateboards, ride-em lawnmowers, golf carts - not sure but there seems to be more and more of them out and about. Oh yeah, and pink Barbie jeeps.
Quit helping people who want to do drugs, do drugs. DON'T DO DRUGS. You could die. They are not safe. Unfortunately too many people, especially young men, are prone to reckless behavior. Be safe. DON'T DO DRUGS!! You could die!! As in dead!! Or maybe you could luck out and cheat death and simply be a bent over zombie. Willing to gamble?
Looking forward to more daylight in the evenings. Those who complain about having to switch their clocks twice a year are most likely just lazy. People cross times zones everyday and I don't hear thousands of stories of car accidents and mental anguish because of it. For us in Central BC better to have light at 10PM than at 3AM in Jun/Jul and in the winter months better to have earlier light for the morning commute and for kids walking to school.
I'm not sure downtown is the right place for the replacement arena. Doubling the capacity will require many more parking spaces and I just don't see the room. Relocating to the lands between 22nd/18th/Ospika/Foothills would seem more logical. Centralized arena equipment, staffing etc. Not having the arena downtown would free up more space for everything else being planned. Money will always be an issue so hopefully the city can somehow find financing through partnerships with others.
Few parking spots. I still think the replacement for Kopar arena may be better situated in the lands around CN Centre and the Kin Centres. Centralized resources for arena staff and equipment and ample parking. Always thought 18th Avenue should have been 4 lanes between Ospika and Foothills to accommodate traffic flows from pool, soccer, exhibition grounds and arenas. Downtown can still be made nicer without the arena.
Here's an 'out of the box thought'. With our streets having varying degrees of snow on them for a number of months each year, why are the road lines painted white? Add to that, by the time the snow flies much of the white has faded making it even harder to see. Conventional ways of doing things can be changed. Which colour to choose?
Thank you to PGFR for being available to respond to medical issues. While I believe PGFR is funded by the City and Paramedics by the Province, this story indicates the City may be getting 'fairly and equitably reimbursed, I assume by the Province. Would have been nice if the story included some numbers. Are we getting properly paid?
We've seen four different Cirque du Soleil shows and they're all very impressive. A bit surprised that Crystal is returning to PG, as that one was already here in April 2018. A good show to take in especialy for those that missed it the first time. We'll pass on this one while waiting for one we haven't seen yet to come to town.
If we all drove close to the speed limit and didn't run red, yellow/red lights, there would be virtually no intersection collisions. What exactly is the rush anyway?
