With all the negativity that is being thrown America's way since Trump was elected (along with total control of both their House of Representatives and Senate) by the Republican Party, perhaps it's an appropriate time to mention a couple of items that Canadian's might consider.First is that Canada has been hiding under the US's military shield since... forever.. as it's capability to defend itself is highly questionable, considering both the size of it's forces and the condition of it's equipment. Such as there is. Not surprising that first, since Canada, as a member of NATO, is also woefully deficient in paying it's share of the costs that NATO incurs. And, it has thus been so for at least the last 55 years or so. Currently Canada ranks a dismal 25th out of the 29 member nations. One has to wonder how Canadians would respond if NATO determined that they should place the men and material on the front lines in inverse order to their having met their GDP contributions.

Nice dream. But it's likely to remain just that- a dream.Progressive municipalities treat their Seniors and Disabled with far greater concern than the, what appears to me at least, lip-service they get in Guelph.

And, as usual, there will be nowhere near enough parking spaces for the number of cars you can assure yourself WILL come with the new residents.Makes one wonder just who's going to get totally inconvenienced while Council tries to figure out how to deal with the (potentially) catastrophic mess left to them by this current Council and Mayor.

Oh , my! The hysteria of "The planet is".. whatever the current crop of "scientists" say it is. 50 years ago we were about to enter another Ice Age. That didn't happen. Now the 'off-spring' of that group of alarmists have issued their up-dated version of climate catastrophism to "we're burning up". That's not going to happen either. What happened to our so-called 'climatologists' that they don't factor in proven science? Well, at least they were able to convince enough wealthy people that they can get far, far wealthier by throwing in with them and fleece the poorly informed to ride their climate crisis see-saw. Buckle up, folks! As it has for untold Millenia, the pendulum WILL swing back again.

What? Do you mean that City employees did NOT fulfill their responsibility to reply, thus forcing a non-decision after approval wasn’t granted within the legislated 120-day timeframe? What were they doing, playing pickleball?

It's likely not the first time a City employee overstepped their authority causing problems.

It's my thought that that level of increase, borne only by property owners, should be classified as legal theft. Meanwhile, the streets are full of potholes, and I defy you to find a residential street (NOT main or feeders) that has been plowed. Perhaps a voter referendum on reducing staff, council, and Mayor compensation by an equal percentage. To help their employers and constituents manage to eat for a week.

She can talk all she wants, but Guelph isn't an $8 Mil place. Period.

I have a solution for the University to improve their current fiscal "restraint" issue and simultaneously improve the lack of housing the city faces. The University needs to direct all of it's "current development priorities" into using their campus land to construct student housing. That would simultaneously assure them of a steady income stream from rentals to their students and free up rentals their students currently occupy for those who can't find housing.

I just love it when sarcasm makes the point perfectly! We have city streets that are in such poor condition that one would think that the city had majority ownership of all the garages doing wheel alignments and under-carriage repairs on the vehicles of those who use them. All of the preceding comments are, of course, made in jest.

If the facts are as stated, Forum SHOULD lose. But stranger things have and do occur.

Since the University is "exempt" from municipal and fees the city should enact a by-law prohibiting ALL student rentals within city limits. The University, in fact ALL post-secondary schools should be required to provide housing for ALL of their students. Guelph needs to get their act together and start thinking of the residents rather than the academic visitors.

When's the next election? Time to replace the entire group of elected persons who vote to increase property taxes at this obscene level.

They can tax me (for the 'downtown development') but they can't make me spend my money there. What the DBGA and Council decide to do there determines that.Which is why I don't.

They can't win against their birth gender with expectations of high level results so they go where they know they have a distinct and measurable advantage. In short they're losers looking to become winners by taking unfair advantage against their 'opponents'. Instead of trying to steamroll their opponents they should be looking to open a third category of competition: transgender women against other transgender women. I doubt there'd be a desire for transgender men v same. But you never know.

Government is the necessary evil that a civilized society must learn to control or face doom.

As much as it pains me to say it, but IF the City REQUIRED enough off street parking with each build they permit, parking wouldn't be an issue. Especially so when cars are parked on street and in the way of the plows. But they don't.

Separate, but to the issue of vacancies, why is it that the city gives it's blessing to destroy existing buildings for the purpose of building more units on a site, but then allows those sites to sit with nothing done on them, sometimes for years? Perhaps Council might consider passing a useful by-law which fines builders for not promptly beginning construction on these ugly, and potentially dangerous sites?
