"largely by a sharp drop in non-violent crime"? So, basically our crime rate has been "declining" since open drug use in the streets got decriminalized and just became the norm?
So, instead of giving it to the seniors now (well a few weeks away after all the unnecessary bureaucratic red tape.) We are now spending $5000 of it, to host yet another useless PR event were photo OP Sampson can look like he cares about seniors? This was one of few motions Mayor Yu put forward that would actually make a difference here and now. It should go without saying that they look for ways to support the seniors centers down the road and long term and not require a $5000 expense of money they could be using now, instead for refreshments and photo OPs and possibly yet another committee to discuss the various possibilities of helping the seniors centers? Vote accordingly next year people....
Regardless of your party affiliation, Bob Zimmer has not done anything for Prince George or the north. He coasts on his parties name collecting a pay cheque because of the lack of any competition here. Todd Doherty I have seen at least out in the community or at events and seems like a decent guy. The most I've ever seen or heard of Bob Zimmer is the ads he has in the citizen.
I drive down 3rd where it turns into 5th heading towards central, everyone rushing to get home doing 70+ like there aren't 4 cross walks in sequence. No one slows down or even looks for people crossing. It's getting ridiculous, and I get honked at and almost rear ended for stopping for the nice lady who always waves at traffic when she's waiting to cross with her walker.
I hate to say it but there is no incentive to stay in B.C or to come to B.C. as a medical professional, specifically a doctor. They're at a point where they have free reign of choice to go where they please. Not to mention if we knew this crisis was coming and all the boomer era doctors were going to retire eventually we should have taken more action to replace them and to promote schooling and funding for those with a passion in the medical field. Looking at it now, no one wants to take on upwards of 200 thousand dollars of debt and 6-10 years of their life pursue a career as a doctor when you can do a lot less intensive and time consuming schooling and make more. I'm only in my 30s if someone came up to me and told me my living expenses and schooling were paid for if I signed an agreement to stay local for X amount of years after completion, if I passed successfully, or had to pay it all back if I dropped out or couldn't hack it.
Curious as to why Kyle Sampson voted both to not have visibility to the taxpayers on where THEIR money is going, and to have the meeting about SOFI behind closed doors. Reasons why the city of Prince George was voted the most secretive. "MotionsCoun. Brian Skakun proposed a motion calling on city directors to report their expenses to council and the public twice a year. It passed six to three, with councillors Polillo, Ramsay and Sampson voting against.Coun. Kyle Sampson proposed a motion to bring the SOFI to a closed council meeting for discussion later this summer. It passed, with only Coun. Brian Skakun voting against."
We are just going to play whack-a-mole when the camp is shut down. They will be looking for new places to set up permanently and in the mean time be more agitated on the streets of PG. A lot of these people are sad to say but beyond help, working with a lot of multi barrier clients, it does feel good when they overcome their addictions and get back to being productive members of society. But some of them are just ....too far gone, years of drug abuse have left them incoherent and unable to be productive members of society. My issue is the kids, they still have a chance, but the system is failing them and I see more and more CHILDREN ending up in these bad circles because they feel like their is no where else to turn, much from broken home lives but also a lot from bullying and lack of known resources. Shame to the predators getting these teens addicted to drugs so they can have an army of zombies to steal for them.
I do agree, Dave, that the way a story is written can shape a narrative. However, I feel like both sides are missing key information. When comparing salaries across different regions of B.C., I would like to see factors such as other councils’ approval ratings and the economic climate of major local industries. For example, we just saw Brink announce it is laying everyone off until the new year. Many constituents are already feeling the strain of the rising cost of living and anxiety around job security. The last thing they want is to see councilors—who many feel already let them down with recent financial decisions—receive higher compensation while typical local wages and benefits are being cut, and food bank usage is at an all-time high.I do appreciate you coming into the comments section to explain your position and acknowledge that you were simply doing the job you were hired to do
As much as I agree, It just doesn't seem sustainable with such a tiny airport. You'd pretty much be always operating at loss, most airport restaurants get their revenue when people are on layovers killing time. People are just quickly in and out in the PG airport, and unless the food ended up being exceptional, most people who are not flying won't go out of their way to go to the airport for a meal.
I'm glad they're actually analyzing and assessing the needs of the kids. Back in the day going to school here in good ol' PG there were a lot of kids who clearly had mental/developmental issues but they either A. just gave them drugs like Ritalin or B. held them back and or abused them because they did not know how to handle them, most of whom I knew, are not doing well now. I think it's better to be pro-active and giving the children the unique support they need at this young age.
Well deserved! This is a woman who spent her entire career advocating for the people of Prince George and the North. She was always happy to make time to listen to her constituents.
As someone who works for an job placement/ hunting agency, corrections centers are heavily understaffed and have a hard time keeping and retaining employees. I always assumed that had something to do with the "catch and release policies" as it seems like no one wants to work in a prison.
Two things I very much agree with in this article. One "maybe they should move their camp shelters to the grass lawn in front of city hall and start camping there and then somebody might come up with a better solution." If this was the case the issue could have been addressed before it snowballed out of control like it has when it was out of sight out of mind until it was too large of an issue. But the biggest issue brought up in this article is the notice of children on the streets and living in MF. In my line of work I have seen our over burdened system fail kids 14-18 who never had a chance due to absentee or substance abusing parents who needed to recover from trauma and the system failed them and so they get preyed upon by local drug dealers who come after vulnerable young kids and turn them into addicts so they will commit theft and crime to to get their hands on their next fix.
Always remember how our elected councilors react/respond/vote when things arise and in this instance think about what happens to that money when they're withholding it "incase some sort of emergency comes up." Personally I think either property tax shouldn't increase this year, or that money can be invested into one of the community projects like funding the downtown security projects they've proposed like "city cameras, to help downtown businesses deal with theft and security." or the additional downtown patrols they proposed. I think it was going to be a mix of extra police and bylaw patrols? I don't like the idea of a taxpayer surplus being held in trust by the city council that was rated the most shady.
@Bob Robertson You're right. I used to see all these critics complaining calling her "Photo Op Bond" but even talking to her, she always said the least she could do was show up for her constituents. In my opinion she did much more than just show up for the north. I have seen and talked to Kiel Giddens at many events since the election, he has been out and about, not so much for Shirley's replacement though. She does have some big shoes to fill.
"We can build more jails. We have the technology. We can find people to staff them." We can certainly build more. Staffing them however is its own separate issue. The entire BC corrections department is struggling with staff retention, turnover, and other issues like stress leaves and HR complaints. They are desperate for workers, and most people they do get in move on to RCMP as soon as they can or take something lax like private security.
