Carrie Tanti she stood up to him only after finding out he was going to replace her. She would have continued supporting his policies had that not happened. Top priority is for Canada to fix the broken economic problems that were created by JT and Freeland. These will become worse with the new US tariffs. Her background is in journalism. Carney is in economics. He is recognized around the world as one of the best. He may have been an advisor to JT but that doesn’t mean JT took his advice.
Let’s place blame where it belongs. It’s the university. Clearly they do not respect the residents of this city. While we are on this topic, they should pay for policing when their students decide to throw parties in the street. It shouldn’t be funded by tax payers!
No, the city shouldn’t purchase this property. We don’t need them to get involved with another heritage project. Just look at what they did with The Old Drill Hall. They spent millions to stabilize it and it has sat empty for 8 or 9 years costing us $125,000 annually to maintain.
It’s not just an impact on our housing supply. The University’s decision to increase enrolment also puts a strain on our health care system which we all know is at a breaking point. The university needs to give up a slice of all the land they own and build accommodations to match student enrolment!
So after our 27% tax increases, instead of balancing the budget with those tax dollars he wants another increase that exceeds the rate of inflation. When will the city finally start to look at efficiencies and living within its means? Deferring projects for a year will only last until the election. His words of compassion for us during these tough times is meaningless without action.
It’s just a matter of time before someone on council decides the frogs need their own paved lanes on the side of the road, intersection lights and water stations. Let’s also reduce the speed limit and turn off all lights. Seriously though, if the city has money to spend on frog crossings, I want my 9%+ tax increase for 2024 refunded!!!!!
I also live in ward 5 and frankly I’m tired of hearing about Leanne Caron’s constant push to have the city control the rights of property owners. I live in total darkness due to the tree canopy over my house. I spend thousands of dollars on maintaining the trees for future generations but if I want to cut one down I don’t have that right unless I pay or beg! I’m not a wealthy person and live on a modest pension which is being eroded by City taxes and new/increased fees. Counsellor Caron, please stop thinking we need you to be the front person for every issue that comes to mind and start asking your constituents what is important to them. We voted for you to represent us yet I see no serious attempt to gather quality/verifiable feedback from constituents before you vote on our behalf. It seems you only have the ear of special interest groups.
Add to that the 18 million dollar budget increase for the downtown streetscaping project they approved last fall (just before delivering their whopping tax increase for 2025).
Coun. Leanne Caron exclaims “households are struggling” and at the same time she brings forward her request to add back $905,000 to the budget for the 200th anniversary party. I don’t care about anniversary parties if I can’t afford food on the table! I’m sick of the Mayor and I’m sick of the councillors who think raising taxes above the rate of inflation is okay. At 6.08% they aren’t even close to the 4% the big Mayor wanted yet he states “I think we’ve landed in a balanced, good place”. Weasle! If anyone is interested in running for Mayor so Cam can go back to selling insurance, let me know as I’m prepared to volunteer my time to help you!
He’s not working full time as Mayor so his pay and benefits should be reduced. The tax payers should also not be paying for the new position he created - Communication Manager to the Mayor. If he was working full time he wouldn't need to hire an assistant.
Take a look at the Mayor’s Facebook post. He’s gone to great lengths to take credit. “ I first raised this issue”, “I was made aware of the issue by a tenant”, “I was hearing from a few others in the community”….,I, I, I, I. Someone needs to tell him a good leader uses WE.
@scottR they not only gave themselves a raise, they are hiring an “Assistant” next year. That’s on top of the new “Communication Manager to Mayor’s Office”. None of this would be necessary if council made better use of their time by properly vetting projects before work is started. My Counciller’s, have the ability to easily reach out to their constituents on Facebook for feedback or even tell us what they are working on but never do. If these positions were turned into full time we would get the exact same low quality output as part time hours.
If the Mayor and Council cancel the 18 million they foolishly decided to spend on the downtown project for “extras” last year, I would support the idea. I’m absolutely against the idea if they are going to increase our taxes even more to pay for it. There is no money left in my household after their 33% tax increases.
In the fall council approved an additional $18 MILLION for the downtown infrastructure project in order to take the design from “good” to “better” and we end up with a concrete jungle with a playground. Taxpayers feel helpless while Council spends and taxes us to death for these pet projects. They say they have concerns about the plan not having a “wow” factor. That better not translate into another increase in spending. Enough is enough!
Why not consider selling the Old Drill Hall that has been sitting empty for 8 or 9 years. An enormous amount of tax money was spent to stabilize the building. We pay $125,000 a year in maintenance and security while Council ignores city staff recommendations to sell the building which has no viable use. Think of how much we could have done with that wasted money. I’m not sure the city has the required expertise to create effective affordable housing solutions.
Please, someone else take him, Guelph can’t take much more. He has proven time and time again he can’t be trusted to spend our tax dollars wisely. He never takes accountability for anything and likes to blame others. That’s not the type of person anyone should vote for! He can’t post anything on social media without hearing our outrage. The newly created role of communication advisor isn’t going to fix his problem.
Isn’t this survey being done a bit backwards? The city has already spent millions changing street signs to lower speeds. They have also spent 38 million for bike lanes on three roads to improve safety. Are we going to continue spending money we don’t have? Cut further spending on this from the budget and reduce our tax increases. A 40% increase over 4 years is shameful. Tax payers of Guelph, you should expect better from your Mayor and Councillors.
