Im about to go get groceries on my bike in December. Hopefully i dont get hit by a car on my way. Id love if there was proper infrastructure that protects me from distracted drivers. The only thing that would stop me is if there is 6+inches of snow. Id have to wait forever for bike lanes to be plowed vs car lanes that get plowed within hours.
I think its a great heritage piece but at more than double the price of replacement, (and likely much faster) we should just remove it. Save, some pieces like the date at the top and make a plaque with the story of the bridge. And showcase a couple artifacts. This decision should have come 10 years ago. The bridge is too far gone now.
If there was a perfect spot for high density housing. This is it. If they enforce some sort of parking requirement, there will be less housing units and those units will cost more to build and rent. There is access to train and bus stations within minute walking.
Im all for density! We desperately need it. But why are we creating density at the edges of the city? Where literally everyone will need a car to get everywhere. We need to put the density closer to amenities and transit hubs like downtown and the south end commercial areas.
So reducing the speed reduces fatal collisions. That is the point. Eliminating collisions is the goal but it’s impossible to eliminate. So we should make those mistakes less catastrophic.
These people love anecdotal evidence “i don't see them being used”. Well since they put this in ive used them every time i need to ride near this area. Every other road around this is a death trap for cyclists.
Do you have evidence of this? I think the intent is to reduce speed of vehicles. There is a strong correlation between the severity of accidents and the speed of vehicles.
Or… crazy idea. Drive with caution when it is snowing. I dont think the barriers are “dangerous” the driver isn’t getting injured if they hit a barrier.
I support it as long as there is also a grocery store. People in the area need it and it would be walkable to thousands of people. People complaining about traffic are just Nimbys. It will be fine. They would rather see hundreds of kilometres of suburban sprawl than a little area of dense housing. I support this. But they need to bring this density to downtown. Not just the edges of town.
I mean they are working their way down the road replacing underground infrastructure. They are working on different areas each time. Unfortunately construction is slow.
This might be a hot take. But i think the City should put sidewalk clearing of local and collector streets in the responsibility of the private property owners to save money. Every other city in the area does this and honestly the sidewalks that the city plows do are terrible.
I think that on street parking should be paid. But only if the parking garages have a free 2 or hour grace period.People who want to park on street in front of their favourite shop can pay for that privilege. But free parking should be available. This would also limit how much traffic is on the streets circling trying to find a spot.Maybe add a few free 5 minute parking spots for pickups.
