We do not want a homeless village.Building the homeless village will not stop many of the “homeless” from setting up their tents.Enabling them by providing a home, furniture , heating, air conditioning, meals….with no incentive to improve their situation is not going to fix the problem Providing a room, bed with communal kitchen and counselling in one of the existing building in our city will accommodate the people who are willing to try and change.
They obviously didn’t listen to the taxpayers who will be on the hook for millions. This will be a never ending money pit and we will still have those disgusting garbage dump tent sites
Well said.I would add that the homeless could step up and help themselves too and not expect handouts. Yes some need specialized help but they need to want to improve their life style. Some of them appear to embrace this lifestyle
In the early 60’s school children were vaccinated by the school nurse. We all lined up an we’re vaccinated to protect ourselves and those around us.These programs worked well and glad to see the TBHU taking charge
With all that is going on in Canada, we should be concentrating on the issues with Trump and his tariff threats. JMark Carney is fighting for Canadians.Yes April 28th has been set aside for injured workers but right now there are bigger issues for all Canadian workers..Canadians need to stand together
Maybe to earn the privilege to reside in these new homes they need to give back by volunteering at seniors home, in summer take care of the cities flower beds and work at the Dew Drop Inn and the Underground Gym.
I respect the differences in people and culture and have learned a lot engaging with them. It is heart breaking to hear that people in our city are so ignorant.
I don’t mean to sound cold hearted but the homeless are where they are because many chose to live like that. There are numerous organizations who assist them should they choose to take advantage of the services. There is no incentive for them to change. They are provided tents, supplies, meal opportunities , etc and put up in motels in the winter. Some of these tent sites have expensive bikes parked beside their home of choice. Some do require services like the LPH used to provide before the government closed psych facilities but others simply chose the lifestyle. Living expenses and services provided free of charge. There has to be a better solution as taxpayers will be on the hook forever, more will come and Thunder Bay will be Ontario’s City with a Big Heart and empty bank account
It doesn’t matter where you put the homeless village, it will not solve the problemThey are projected to build only 80 units, where will the other hundreds of homeless go.There will still be tents for those who choose not to go into a monitored encampment.City council needs to find a large empty building and set it up to provide accommodation and addiction counselling and remove the tent cities. This would provide year round shelter and help those who want it. This should be less than $5 million plus.
$2.8 million for 100 units is $28,000 per unitIs this a one time costs or will tax payers being the hook for furnishing, cleaning and maintenance, policing and all other associated costs.Surely empty buildings like the old post office , old court house for example could be refurbished, simple rooms, common washroom facilities and a common kitchen and family room.
