Can’t prove it, but in my estimation there is an uptick in disrespectful conduct towards public officials in recent years. Not sure why, but I attribute some of it to “Trumpification.”Disrespect of legitimate media (“fake news”), disrespect of medical officials who simply follow science, name-calling of political opponents, promotion of weird ideas, etc filters down to everyday to some people who just simply can’t stand to follow direction to which they disagree with. Instead of rational debate or polite conversation some feel the need to constantly be angry, have an upside down Canadian flag while yelling freedom & driving an “F” Trudeau vehicle. Always so indignant (like Poilievre). Manners & politeness while maintaining impulse control seem to be a foreign concept to many. Think many of these types are not well travelled-they don’t know how good they have it in Canada. Yes, there are issues, but keep it together will ya?
To test a PC party member one needs to ask about rainbow crosswalks, puberty blockers, abortion, vaccines, gun control & climate change. If member gets worked up over any of those issues then it’s time to move on. If the member can maintain their composure then it might be worth listening to that PC member on other issues. Figure the number odds are about 50%. “Whadda mean I shouldn’t be able to a wide selection of automatic assault rifles?! Freedom!”Painful I know.
Feel fortunate to live in a society where health authorities promote healthy living. Wonderful that vaccines are easily available. Dr Bonnie & all people that do what they can promote healthy living are amazing. Thanks all!
Sit back & pontificate about PG downtown. Whine about the left wing cabal that runs the world. How about this approach instead: people dial back their social media, obsession with sports & vehicles, gambling, etc by a mere 10% & volunteer with the homeless, the drug addicted, recently released inmates, at-risk youth, etc. Perhaps initiate a meeting where people can come up with volunteer ideas that helps downtown PG. Heck, go pick up some litter. Yes, gov’t should be critiqued & possibly change approaches. But the real solution is for people to get off their duff & help as well. Unrealistic? I don’t think so. I’ve seen major changes occur in society. Start by looking in the mirror to see where those changes can begin.
Suspect many of the people who often leave sarcastic unproductive comments have never taken a law course, spent time in observing first appearance court(you’re allowed to watch court; it’s eye opening) or read a book on criminal sentencing. Nonetheless, they offer their expertise. Thank you. Here’s a thought: if people reduced the time they spent watching tv, gambling, gaming, social media, etc by a mere 10% & instead volunteered with a victim’s rights group, or maybe spending time with a released offender (talk to the John Howard Society) or spent time with at-risk youth I would suggest there would be a myriad of positive connections made including less crime. But hey, it’s much easier to complain about the gov’t & politicians than to look in the mirror.
Some people always angry: don’t like city employees, Northern Health, criminal justice system, politicians, firefighters, & on & on. What’s it like to be continually mad at the world? Do you like anyone? Oh, Trump seems to be admired by the angry crowd. I ask PG municipal employees behave in good faith (a foreign concept for many conservatives). Might not agree 100% with the decision or outcome, but if good faith is practiced I can live with it. The grumpy old man vibe in the comments section is bizarre. Lighten up.
Always find it interesting that some people who complain about the carbon tax / fuel prices drive gas guzzling pick ups for non work reasons & often drive in a fuel inefficient manner. Hard to take their whining seriously.
Pierre Poilievre is running an election without a travelling press corps so without seasoned reporters. Unheard of in recent history. Afraid of a lengthy sit down with media who may ask difficult questions. Yes, more local city & rural reporters will be heard from which is a good thing, but also more of the “same old thing” at the numerous pit stops. Poilievre good at slogans, press scrums, nicknames & the quick give & take. Too bad he is scared of real debate & in depth questioning. An embarrassment to democracy.
Don’t think the average Joe has a clue to running the economy, but it’s rather obvious Poilievre a distant second to Carney when it comes to running our economy. And Conservatives attract the lunatic fringe. Whether it’s anti vax or wrapping their heads around climate change Conservatives attract the anti science crowd. Recall a Conservative saying he consults the bible before discussing / passing a budget. Seriously? And Conservatives get wound up over rainbow crosswalks, puberty blockers, abortion, trans library readings, etc. > the sort of intellectual midgets one simply wants to avoid & hope they never hold any political office.
There would be a lot more $$ for problems in the medical system & less $$ being spent by NH if people ate healthy, exercised, quit smoking, avoided drugs & liquor along with getting the vaccines & screenings available. People love to blame gov’t agencies without ever shouldering any of the blame. Good luck to China Cup.
Sounds reasonable. Every neighbourhood should be part of the solution in a proportional manner. Hopefully the “think of the children” RWNJ will not cause too much of a headache.
“NDP’s soft on crime approach.” Unfortunately, conservative types ongoing hue & cry is eaten up by right wingers. Drug use & all its complications are completely blown out of proportion. Science & evidence ignored. Maybe the Conservative Party should have serious look at alcohol and how that is more of a factor in our criminal justice & medical systems. Heck, suspect JimPattinson is more complicit than drug dealers when it comes to serious issues with our medical system considering some of his business revolves around selling liquor, tobacco & vaping products along with junk food, fast food, etc. Yes, some drugs are a problem, but please realize it’s not the boogeyman the right continually harps on about. Exhausting.
“The majority. . . due to the toxicity of UNREGULATED drugs.” Let’s protect people with the legalize, regulate & educate model. But no, the uptight right won’t allow it. And the rights self-worth appears to be measured by cheap shots at the homeless. Also, it’s ok for “safe” alcohol & tobacco, which have caused millions of lives to end prematurely, to be legal and readily accessible. But society won’t allow other drugs to be legal & regulated & therefore reduce harm? Sad.
Nice to see. Hopefully Andrew’s product continues to be successful. I get tired of the constant p.r. positive spin the liquor industry push with their cancer causing product. Society needs more people like Andrew pushing non-alcohol product. Best wishes Andrew. I’ll be looking for Peak.
The yowl of “tough on crime” by the tinfoil hat brigade is overblown. Send dealers away for life? Good luck with that. It’s been shown in many areas that just leads to the most hardcore dangerous criminals taking over therefore creating a more dangerous society. The market (drug users) never goes away so there will always be dealers. Can not arrest & imprison your way to nirvana. Society needs to volunteer with victim right groups, spend time with the recently released inmates, spend time with at-risk youth, etc. Spend less time on social media, gambling, sports watching, gaming etc. Don’t expect right wingers or RWNJ to do any of that however as they prefer to post sarcastic barbs aimed at politicians & alike. Sad & pathetic.
Perhaps people who have issues with the tax increase could ensure they get on council since they appear to have all the solutions. Also find it odd that people who often have contrarian viewpoints with gov’t spending will voluntarily give the government more money when purchasing lottery tickets.
Judges should be elected? That leads to increased chance of political interference & listening to the loudest barking dog. A judge’s job is not to be popular. Lots to improve in justice system, but electing judges is a laughable suggestion.
