OPINION: Does Guelph have power issues, the political kind?

You should run for council. We need sober well rounded people in office.

People will complain about anything. This is good news, simple as that.

The City Council continues to peddle a fetishized narrative that downtown will become a hub for economic growth, and idea that passed from possibility to fantasy over three decades ago in most North American cities. Like most politicians these days, their policies are rooted in nostalgia for a past that never existed and respond to the dominant bloc of Guelph voters who are so out of touch with reality they can't understand the difference between their own egos/desires for material things and what is required to make Guelph a prosperous and safe community for everyone who lives there.

Well said. It's a typical defensive response to the City Council's lack of policy and continual need to deflect from their responsibilities.

Great initiatives! This is the types of things we should be funding more of. Children are the future.

You are completely on point here. Most Guelphites are very small minded and out of touch with reality. Much of this issue is related to the "me generation" who think everything is about them and their minor inconveniences (i.e. nostalgia) even though they are incredibly wealthy and privileged compared to other generations. They dominate most important positions in the city and in non-profit and charity world, and don't practice what they preach. They won't retire, they won't step aside, they won't do anything of the environmentally friendly things they will say they'll do, they'll just muck about and yell at the top of their lungs about anything because they are so desperate to be heard, mostly wailing themselves into irrelevance with their daily venting procedures. It's boring now watching them in the comments, so many angry, spoiled people.

This bill will only lead to legal challenges and wasted money on lawyers; the province will lose in court as the bill breaches Charter rights. Spending money on social support and housing is the only way forward for combating poverty. We used to know this in Ontario, but somehow we as citizens have forgotten our own lessons about how to keep people safe and invest in social support. Investing in social support and housing is good for the economy, jobs, and combating poverty. Throwing money at lawyers, police, and courts only exacerbates poverty and homelessness and makes it worse.

littlebill, not sure what made you say something so unkind and unnecessary. People are people and everyone deserves to use public spaces.

Another fluff piece by another out of touch Guelph Councilor. Guelph's government, which has been one of the most wealthy in the province, has consistently lacked foresight or planning and we have seen the results: lack of social spending/support, dithering over important policy reforms/projects, or planning for economic emergencies. It's time to stop blaming the provincial government and take action at a municipal level. If the provincial government won't pay for it, the city should and then sue the province for not fulfilling its mandate. Other cities have done this. There is no time to wait and our current council is content to sit on its hands and do little while Guelph's residents struggle in all aspects of their lives. We can't afford to eat or own homes or rent. Wake up.

It's a very Canadian thing for housing prices dropping being considered a bad thing. Such a weird country we live in where things being unaffordable is a good thing. No wonder we are declining so badly.

You're right, I don't like what you said because it was tone deaf and you may find this hard to believe, but I advocate for all people. This is in line with the Charter of Rights and Freedom. Suggest you read it to understand Canadian values. Social workers, lawyers, doctors, psychologists, and people with real credentials would disagree with you, based on years of service. Being scornful of social workers, who sacrifice alot for our society is shameful and another tone deaf comment on your part.

A quick read for you here on Canadian values and rights and obligations under Canadian law, where we live: https://www.justice.gc.ca/eng/csj-sjc/rfc-dlc/ccrf-ccdl/
Our local Green MPP is really good at complaining and then ducking for cover with a nice photo op and some gladhanding. We need someone with pull and influence. Having a Green MPP sounds nice, but we lack the ability to have real pull at Queen's Park and Guelph has paid the price over and over again with making the mistake of voting in a Green candidate. We need the ability to lobby the cabinet and DF and Mike isn't capable of that.
