How on earth could we possibly be over budget? It basically did NOT snow last winter. We got a couple decent snowfalls in December and November, but nothing even remotely significant. It's absolutely mind boggling. I've lived here my entire life, and it only seems to be the last few years where I see plows out with no snow, scraping up sparks, guzzling fuel and man hours when it serves no purpose. I don't remember this being a regular occurrence 5+ years ago.
BGeez, what an assenine comment from someone with absolutely no clue. My wife fits into that category of younger nurses. She constantly works 7 or 8 days straight with a couple days off to catch her breath. She's not required to, but picks up shifts regularly because there is absolutely no one else to cover shifts. She and her coworkers almost never work full strength, there's not enough nurses or care aides to do so. She's regularly berated by patients and their families, and has been physically assaulted in several occasions. I can't believe someone would believe that our front line health care workers are lazy and unwilling to work. Ignorance at its finest. Remember BGeez, these are the people that will be taking care of you one day (soon, I'm assuming. You're sounding a bit senile).
Look up all the disastrous examples in the States when data centers build near communities. Other than short term construction jobs (almost never local companies) these centers are a massive strain on power grids, pump out emissions that would put mills to shame, and are an absolute blight on the landscape. They lie to get approval, make promises that never come to fruition. They are not a solution to struggling economies.
The idea is fantastic and much needed, but I don't hear anyone talking about staffing. Who is going to work here? Every single health care facility in this region is brutally understaffed with doctors, nurses and care aides. These don't just appear, increases need to be planned years in advance. My wife works in long term care, and has for almost 15 years. 95 percent of her shifts are have been short staffed. Many doctors don't want patients in long term care, so a small number carry the burden. Our health authority already completely relies on travel nurses from around Canada that get paid almost 1000.00 a day, and foreign nurses, but even these workers can't fill all the gaps. If Northern Health manages to staff it enough to even open, it will be by pulling nurses and care aides from other facilities/emergency rooms in our health authority or others, which just force closures in other communities. This is just so short sighted to imagine staff magically appear.
How on earth could anyone be surprised by this? Have you been to the Bay lately? Odds are you would be one of three customers on the same floor and you'd be hard pressed to find an employee. Deals were scarce, and I've been in there lots of times looking at an item when I figure I'll just pull up Amazon to see what they sell the same item for. Every time, significantly less, be here in 2 days. Am I supposed to pay 50.00 more to be a patriotic Canadian?! It's a ridiculous thought, but it seemed like the Bay relied on that kind of thinking. Their final nail in the coffin was their pathetic attempt to cash in on Zellers nostalgia. Not by having a pop up store that offered different brands at more affordable prices, but by selling Zellers branded shirts for 40.00 and Zeddy bears for 30.00. This is completely self inflicted. I hate that this is happening to the staff, but the writing's been on the wall for a decade
Why on Earth wouldn't we at least try it here? We have useless managers on the city's payroll making as much as a GP. Why not hire a doctor as a municipal employee who will actually make a positive impact on the community, rather than just collecting a paycheque. Send a couple redundant clerks to train as medical office assistants to run the clinic and we're there. But, I'm sure they'll say no. They'll say it's a provincial responsibility, which may be true, but the province is failing so spectacularly, we can't do any worse.
