Housing is a privilege, and with it comes the responsibility to pay rent on time and follow the rules. When rent is not paid, and apartments are abused requiring expensive often extensive repairs operational costs go up for landlords and they have no option but to raise rents to cover costs. There are also a lot of tenants who abuse rent inclusive services such as free heating, and water by running the water excessively running up the water bill and also the gas bill by turning up the heating with windows open, leaving landlords with no option but to raise rents. Then we hear about sob stories on the news of sky rocketing rents, and labeling landlords as the bad players. I'd like to hear more about what is like for landlords dealing with these situations.
Patty enjoys sunning herself in front of the cameras stating feel good messages and other niceties. How about going home and dealing with the constituents on the issues facing her riding that are far from sustainable, but are getting worse as time goes by.
There is nothing wrong with the health care system south of the border for those who opt to make their payments on time. In fact their health care is superior with cutting edge procedures not found here. There are many Canadians who seek out surgical procedures willing to pay out of pocket that they cannot get here or because they face long waiting times to save their lives and or improve their quality of life.
Both Trudeau and Biden have done nothing for the average person but make life more difficult. The economy on both sides of the border have done poorly, while energy prices have surged, and with that the cost of food, housing and just about everything else. Taxes have gone up while job opportunities have gone down along with the standard of living. Homeless encampments are sprouting up like mushrooms throughout both countries. While Trump is not popular by many, he is still seen as the best of the worst, when he was officially elected markets surged. People are looking for change, they are tired of economic stagnation, rising taxes and a lack of meaningful employment. On the international front Biden and Trudeau did nothing while the wars are raging on and China continues to build up its military might. The electorate sees Trump as the right president at this time and many here are leaning towards the right in the polls now. People want change.
'The jewel of the city's waterfront'. Jewelry does not come cheap, and it will be the taxpayer's who will be responsible for making the payments. The gallery's board has unrealistic expectations and dreams and are completely out of touch with the financial situation the city is in. Next up the Soccerplex; who knows how far the construction cost overruns will be, but the art center gives us some insight of what to expect. Fiscal responsibility is not part of the equation, but unrealistic dreams are.
I frequent the area roads that Aiello has listed and in all the decades driving through the area I have never seen any heavy trucks other than the ones that pull into County Fair mall off of East avenue. The only trucks I have seen were gravel trucks delivering loads locally on Onion lake rd and Melborne. City councilors are looking for any excuse to ram this bylaw through.
Its time that that Kakabeca organizes to push back on this dangerous proposal put out by the city to garner a few extra votes or whatever it is they expect to gain by pushing traffic through the city instead of using 102. The city never collaborated with areas being affected or take into consideration their concerns, but rather ignored them to ram this through no matter what or how. This new bylaw is unfair to everyone who not only lives in Kakabeca, but for all of the residents living in Thunder Bay who use the expressway, including those living near by it for all the expected noise, congestion, air pollution and the anticipated accidents to come.
The comments made by city council reflecting the management of the arts center spells the truth about this project. The real damage has been done by the management of the arts center with unrealistic plans for a community of this size. If the building was scaled back in size or better yet located in an existing building, one with historical significance like the museum on Donald st. which we have many, then perhaps the project wouldn't be in the financial state it is in now.
City council has a habit of rushing every project conceived without fully thinking things through, Lets not rush this, but study it further. It appears to be a hasty decision, that could end the lives for many and maim moree with increased accident rates place upon the expressway which is just an arterial road at this point. The expressway in its present form is not safe, and adding more truck traffic is a recipe for disaster. Diverting traffic from Dawson rd, into other communities, is not the answer. The only answer to this problem is a brand new city bypass around Thunder Bay, this new project is simply a bandage over a bigger problem.
Its nice to have all these facilities, but no thought has been made about paying for them. The figures look good on paper, but do not take into consideration cost overruns during construction and their ongoing maintenance going forward. We have a lot of aging infrastructure being ignored, when it fails council scrambles to find the monies for repairs. The annual tax increases become unmanageable for many, neighborhoods decline, along with business unwilling to make the investments to set up in the city due to costs. The decline continues to snowball with the need to spend more monies on temporary villages putting further burdens on the social services and police. This pattern of spending is unsustainable.
There was no busing in my day, we never missed a day from school without a good written reason like a sick note. There were incentives in place to motivate everyone to attend school on a timely bases and we never complained, it was just a part of day to day life.
This makes no sense when there has been a push both federally and provincially to create more housing, not everyone wants to live in cities, and it would alleviate some of the pressure placed upon urban areas for new housing.
The people who are footing the bill for this proposed project should have the final say. If we are to have a true democracy put the question on a plebiscite.
If there are two approved sites for the burial of this waste it only makes sense to choose the one that is closest to the reactors producing this waste. Its both unnecessary to move the waste long distances when the alternative is closer by, but ultimately the cost to haul the waste will end up on hydro bills.
I voted only once in my life for the liberals, and that was for David Peterson who led the Ontario liberals. One of their mandates was to increase the gas tax. I learned my lesson because they had nothing to offer to make life easier, I never voted liberal or NDP ever again federally or provincially.
When Collin stated that “We're not done yet asking for other people's money to help with what we consider to be a very important initiative for this city,”. It sounds more like a demand than a plea.
