Did you have a problem with the media reporting on that petition for referendum for Alberta to continue indefinitely as Canada's colony and on banning all referendums because, you know, we the plebes should have no right to speak freely? Media reports, or rather supposed to report on what's happening. At least the Western Wheel continues that classic tradition of reporting without partisan bias attached. It should be respected.
Thousands, Robert. Thousands, not hundreds. I and my family spent about 20 min waiting and at that time just under one hundred people were there. It's certainly not scientific, but it allows us to assume that on Friday probably about 5,000 people signed. Maybe even more people will come to sign on Saturday. The actual registering and signing took about 2 minutes. I guess on Monday we will learn the approximate number of people who signed here in Okotoks exercising their, our, constitutional right.
We are done being victims, that's why we want to separate. Danielle Smith enables direct democracy, referendums are tools of direct democracy. Smith simplified access to referendums on all matters of importance, for all Albertans, not only on independence. Of course Alberta can separate. It's perfectly legal, constitutional. But the signing today and tomorrow is not about separation per se. It's about people's right to referendum, about people's right to have their voices heard. You may be against separation, but calling your neighbours "traitors" is unfair to say the least. Be respectful, civil, if you want others to be respectful, civil towards you. Because the alternative is ... ugly.
Preserve Okotoks and Foothills as traditionally western! No mosques, it's proven beyond doubt they breed and attract trouble. No cancerous growth through large developments. We don't want to become Calgary or Edmonton same way they don't want to become Vancouver or Toronto. Preserve and protect Alberta we know and love!
Not too many of us get 12% raise over four years. Tell your leadership to take the deal. Also, 30 kids per classroom is not overcrowding. My class was the same in size, decades ago.
At least four trans students at Foothills Composite? Really? And why this non-issue is newsworthy anyway? Nothing else to write about in Okotoks and around? How many people at Foothills are concerned about this nonsense? A whopping dozen or so? Sick.
All this "affordable housing" rhetoric is nothing but virtue signalling nonsense. Because building 40 or 50 "affordable" units in over 30,000 (and growing) town won't make a dent but, sure, it allows ones involved to "feel good" about themselves and make "progressive" nonsensical speeches. Also, why building these barracks in Okotoks? We already know they won't make a dent in the affordability problem, we also know that nobody wants to live in these shoeboxes, and they make our beautiful town look like formerly nice East Germany's towns defaced with Soviet era barracks that look as ugly as our "affordable housing" barracks.
Your logic is no different from a logic of early 20th century Brit living on Canada who believed that Canada did not need Parliament and Prime Minister of her own and must always be a colony of the Great Britain. And why would we go to Montana? Our home us right here in Alberta. Maybe you should consider going to Ottawa instead?
I have noticed that folks who outright reject the idea of independence for Alberta have no knowledge of history and sport that nauseatingly obsolete imperialist mentality. Such type of people wanted Canada to continue forever as a simple colony of the Great Britain without her own Parliament and Prime Minister. Such type of people wanted Ukraine to always belong to Russia. You know, such type of people.
Canada does not train family doctors any more? They have too many doctors in the UK, India and Ni geria? How many Okotokians dream about a family doctor from India or Ni geria? Just curious.
The only way to have water security in Okotoks is to curb greed driven unsustainable growth which our environment here just does not support. Growth is not always good and progressive. Growth can be cancerous to towns like ours because of bringing along both environmental and social pressures that tend to destroy communities like ours or at least make them much less pleasant to live in.
Everybody knows why these girls participate in events like that: they hope to land a lucrative modelling career. That's all. No other reason. Or should we continue pretending it's about those "platforms" that "raise awareness" about issues everybody is well aware of or "foster acceptance" of what has long ago been accepted?
Before commenting, I would advise Albertans across our great province to visit Alberta Prosperity Project website, read and think. Don't dismiss the idea outright. Educate yourself on the subject before speaking up. It always helps to read and think first, to do your own research second, to think again and only then speak. It's an advise our teachers and parents gave us when we were kids. It is still valid. And please remain civil. Don't be hateful towards your neighbours. Try to understand where they come from, why the support this idea. Discuss, respectfully. Don't call your neighbours ugly names, because this is how civil wars start.
According to CBC, it's between 35% and 45% at the time circa Trudeau resignation, even more among our young people. With Carney, many hit the pause, but seeing now how the federal government behaves, looking at that fake meeting with an anti-development foreign funded NGO with misleading name that makes people think they represent indigenous... More and more Albertans say "I had hopes, but it helpless. I gave Carney a chance, but it does not go anywhere. This marriage does not work. It's abusive and toxic. We want freedom."
You sound like British imperialists who used to say "I don't want to be Canadian unless I am also British". These were people who thought Canada should always be a colony without our own parliament and prime minister, without our own voice, without ability to make decisions for ourselves. Now the same imperialist federalist types oppose the idea of independence, and not just oppose it but calling their fellow Albertans traitors. Listen. Read. Do your own research and analysis. Think using your own brain. Discuss. But don't call your neighbors traitors. It's unfair and ugly.
One cannot possibly compare Finland to Canada. Finland is a highest trust, cohesive, homogeneous racially, ethnically, culturally society. Canada is increasingly the opposite of it, a country of strangers who have less and less in common. Finland can be compared to a large family. Canada of today can only be compared to a transit area of a large international airport. Families are known for helping each other. Strangers usually feel no impulse to help other strangers. Thus, whatever they do in Finland to solve their problems cannot be transferred to Canada because it simply won't work here naturally.
No. We don't want Okotoks to become a mini Mumbai. Growth does not bring prosperity, except to the council with their questionable decisions. Growth brings cancerous problems we do not want here.
