Please no more Thorn. She wants to hear my hopes and dreams - how about a small town the way it was. How about stop filling the town with empty concrete buildings that have sat empty for the longest time. How about being able to water my lawn without the lawn police coming and leaving door hangers about my water usage. Most importantly, how about giving the town full transparency for how our tax dollars are being spent. Another term with the current woke af mayor makes my stomach turn.
How can the mayor protect what we are when the lines of "what we are" are so muddled and buried beneath unnecessary, multiple construction projects (I'm looking at you, pickle-barn), over-taxation in conjunction with lowered services such as snow removal. This must have been what it felt like to wake up in America and finding out who got "elected" to run that country.
As if the Town actually cares what people think. Tanya and her crew have their own agendas/priorities, and the people of Okotoks have zero say UNLESS it aligns with Tanya's view. And who exactly thought it would be a great time to inundate people with robo-calls to fill out a survey during a federal election when we're already getting badgered by robo-calls for our votes??? Classic. Read the room, Tanya.
I don't understand the point of an open house other than for the town to pat itself on the back. The general consensus "appears" to be that Okotokians do not want more development. Granted, the houses will sell, the apartments will get renters. However, there is very little industry in Okotoks to support jobs that go above minimum wage. There is one bus daily that takes people to downtown Calgary for work and back to Okotoks. If the town insists on "make it bigger then they'll come" ... we'll just end up as an offshoot of Calgary at some point in the very near future with a bunch of empty office space and industrial warehouses.
I voted for change! Unfortunately, too many people couldn't be bothered so thank you to all those apathetic people for contributing to a complete cluster of a town. Let's add a special thank you to our mayor for being so backward-looking. Perhaps it's time for the people of Okotoks to start fighting back. Start by looking into Part 7.1 of the Municipal Government Act and get her recalled. This community deserves transparency and accountability. From questionable wage increases—our CAO being the highest paid among peers in Alberta—to the frequent use of NDAs for employees deemed “not a good fit,” the pattern is concerning. Okotoks should be a model of good governance, not a cautionary tale.
With all these "improvements" taking place, has anyone considered that when a train comes through, the traffic circle will essentially be unusable due to cars waiting to cross the tracks? Where oh where will all those cars go Tanya?
Can someone explain why we’re prioritizing tax dollars for a massive Pickle Barn over essential infrastructure? This project feels like it adds unwanted growth and takes away from the town’s character. We deserve progress that improves quality of life—not just bigger, uglier developments.
This Show & Shine was one of the best events that Okotoks has held. Every nook and cranny along Railway was filled with beautifully restored cars and trucks. There was a great selection of food trucks with something for everyone (albeit a little pricey).
The CAO has to justify giving herself massive wage increases somehow. Why not use tax dollars. BTW, I couldn't agree with you more. People needed to vote to get the Thorn out of our sides to fight the increases, and you saw how that went.
It's absolutely possible to have her recalled. However, it will take time (18 mths after election day) and people have to somehow get around/through the highly over-paid CAO (Elaine Vincent) for the Town, and Minister of Municipal Affairs (Deron Bilous) in order to file a notice of recall. I guess it all depends how badly the Town want this mayor gone.
I wanted to send out a super special thank you to the lady behind the barrier at the Remembrance Day services who allowed her toddler to screech for the entire 2 minutes of silence remembering those who gave their lives for us. I watched you - you made no attempt to remove the screaming child, instead letting us all enjoy your parenting style (if you can call it that). Could you have been more selfish? Shame on you.
That whole area looks so terrible now. Pickleball court looks like a pickleball barn (awful design). And how many people are they expecting to play? It's almost as big as a school. Oh right - they're throwing up another one of those in the area as well. Just wait until they install another three sets of traffic lights on 32nd to further congest that road.
Great. People take stop signs as suggestions. Now they'll load up 338th with traffic lights every 12 feet like they did for all the new construction on Northridge . Cool.
I think we're a bit beyond being a "bedroom community". The growth of Okotoks has pushed us closer to being an actual city. We are definitely no longer a small town, which is sad for those that thought otherwise.
Agreed. Maybe start bringing in planners that aren't fresh out of school, woke af and actually have experience and common sense when making these planning decisions.
