No matter how many bike lanes you rip out, it won't fix congestion. Car traffic will continue to get worse as Guelph grows. It has been categorically proven that more lanes induces demand for more cars and produces more traffic. The only proven solution is improving our streets to enable viable alternatives that people can choose such as transit and bikes which takes cars off the road so drivers have less traffic on their commutes.C'mon, people. How many cities must this be proven in before people stop treating cyclists as a punching bag when they're stuck in traffic.
You're telling me that nobody uses the bike lanes but also there is a sinister lobby, more powerful than all automobile of companies... for bicycles. Which you claim only students use. There is so much conspiratorial thinking in these comments over something as small as a bike lane. People need to take a break from the internet and go for a walk.
That person clearly took the turn too fast if they couldn't safely turn onto a 40km/h street. In no way is somebody "forced" to drive into oncoming traffic at a turn with plenty of space for a vehicle.
Hello, fellow Canadians. I also think that Canada is bad and Trump is good. This is a 100% real comment by a Canadian human and not an example of astroturfing.
Since I often see pushback on these kinds of decisions, I'd like to mention that lowering speed limits has little to no impact on trip time while having large impacts on survival rates in crashes. It seems counter-intuitive but it works. The survival rates of pedestrians being hit by a car:30 km/h - 90%40 km/h - 70%50 km/h - 15%60 km/h - 5%Heavier vehicles have worse rates as well.Changing the speed limit from 50 to 40 only changes a 10km trip by 3min with no intersections. But with waiting at stop lights, they end up being roughly the same amount of time. This results in a whopping 55% increase in survival rates if someone is hit!Source: https://guelph.ca/living/getting-around/vision-zero/
Traffic calming is not the primary motive for adding bike lanes but they absolutely do help with this."The most comprehensive study of bicycle and road safety to date finds that building safe facilities for cyclists is one of the biggest factors in road safety for everyone. Bicycling infrastructure -- specifically, separated and protected bike lanes -- leads to fewer fatalities and better road-safety outcomes for all road users."https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/05/190529113036.htm
Saying he wants it but not where he can see it downtown because seeing unhoused people gives him and a few businesses downtown the ick is textbook NIMBYISM.
Do you expect people to just walk there from downtown? Keep in mind, many cannot even afford a bus fare and certainly not a car, cab, or bike. Access to the location matters.
I can't believe I have to say this but I hope this development has sidewalks. It's shocking how many communities are built where you can't even safely go for a walk. Do it right the first time with a protected bike path too.
Mayor Guthrie gaslighting not one but 4 AAC committee members and lying to a journalist is not a good look. I can't see why all 4 disability advisors would possibly all resign without a very good reason.
The CTS treats addiction and there is 0 evidence that this healthcare centre is causing addiction in schools. With the CTS closure, there is no longer a safe place for people to consume substances and access treatment under supervision of healthcare professionals. Their only option now is to consume publicly and they will be more likely to do it outside and in view of schools. This will also cause more deaths, including in view of schools. All-around, closing CTS is a terrible idea.We now have a closed CTS and no HART Hub half-measure to replace it which is a tremendous healthcare failure.
It only takes a few people using a diesel bus for it to have lower emissions than a gas car. It's better to have more buses and better frequency than less, electric buses. Better for the environment, for bus ridership, and for decreasing car traffic. Yes, all electric is ideal but the city neglects transit so much while that the budget has to be stretched thin. The sizes are perfectly fine and we are not a special, unique city when it comes to transit. The city needs to fix the core, obvious issues behind why it is less convenient than automobiles and the buses will fill up. Ironically, if the city bought a bunch of smaller buses, then they'd be able to increase frequency and quality of service, so more people would take the bus and we'd wish we bought full length in the first place.
Erin Caton is the least problematic city councilor. Anybody who knows the horribly bigoted and hate-promoting man who is being referred to knows that Erin is being mild and even kind in describing him. This is a waste of time.Investigate Cam Guthrie bullying constituents and advisory committee members instead.
