'It's time to move forward' — how council justified arena vote

I 100% disagree with the council on this totally stupid plan. North Bay is a city of seniors now and the young can’t wait to get away from here. Who is going to pay for this debacle, the taxpayers will, who are already paying thru the teeth. The $37,000,000.00 taxpayer share can be better spent on roads that can shake one’s teeth out of their mouth, the infrastructure is a disaster, we are short of housing for all walks of life, etc etc! The taxpayers are already paying for the homeless so they won’t be cold, hungry, etc, etc. This will add hundreds to already struggling and overburdened families, who may have to decide if they pay their taxes or feed and clothe their children, let alone the chosen few who will have the money to pay for hockey fees, equipment, etc. But wait, council may pass subsidizing families who don’t have that money, so more for them. I wonder which council member will have their name attached to this new ice palace!

I have hardly missed the postal workers as I was hardly getting mail other than flyers. The one good thing about the postal strike is that the only remaining bill that I would receive, I have now made paperless. I gave up sending parcels for Christmas because the costs were too high! The post office always strikes around Christmas, so this was no surprise! The only people I feel sorry for are the seniors who are not computer or internet savvy! Otherwise, they can remain on strike.

Another question, why can’t these hockey players use Memorial Gardens or aren’t they good enough! What’s another few hundred added onto this 70 year old taxes who can’t afford to move into a seniors apartment because there aren’t any and I can’t save up the money! But then the council doesn’t listen to their constituents nor do they care. Looking at leaving North Bay after over 60 years of living here and my granddaughter can’t wait to leave next year for university!

I would rather support police, fire, nurses, doctors for increases than the useless ice palace. My question is, how much more will the taxpayer have to pay to support everyone, including all on ODSP, homeless, etc etc, etc? My pockets are not bottomless!

Move the homeless to the areas that got funding since we didn’t!

North Bay will go bankrupt! It’s all due to this council listening to the chosen few, and making our great, great grandchildren pay for this nonsense! Built in swamp! It’s no wonder North Bay has the highest taxes in Ontario!

We are looking to move OUT of North Bay district so NO MOREof my hard earned money is wasted - so my more than $6,000.00 in taxes can be obtained from someone else! What a useless council, who broke all promises and continues to waste money. At least they will be known as the council that bankrupted the city. Way to go council.

You like it so much, move there.

It will never ever be only $63,000,000.00! Never in my 70 years has anything the council bid on and decided on been on budget! Try 100 million dollars by the time it’s done! The council has lied to its citizens again and again. Only the chosen few will use this but it will cost my great grandchildren money to pay off.

I guess the teachers and bus drivers wanted an early start to a long weekend. Kids spend more time at home then at school. Morning classes should have been given.

Digging into history, The last time I heard the word annexation was when Hitler annexed Austria using the same rhetoric and hatred that I’m hearing now! We are a free country and what happened in 1938 will hopefully not happen now! If we forget history, it’s bound to happen again. Let’s hope not, for my grandchildren’s sake, because we have a safer country now.

There has been total lack of accountability and transparency by ALL levels of government, including city councillors, deans of schools, etc, for years and until the taxpayers stop paying the ridiculous taxes, the highest in Ontario, this will continue to happen . All taxpayers need to come together to fight for OUR rights, and not let the government run all over us!

I would like to say that it’s great that North Bay has hit this milestone, however I am no longer proud of the city. I wish I could save money to move elsewhere, but most of my pension money goes to the extraordinary high taxes, one of the highest in Ontario! Buy a house in Milton Ontario for 1 million dollars and pay around 3,000.00 in taxes, double here. North Bay was great once, not anymore

The asphalt they use is ridiculous as it disappears after a few days and then the work has to be redone! Too many holes and deep ruts on our roads to begin with!

The council is very good about guaranteeing things! Not one thing guaranteed has come true!

They are also way too scared to put this on a referendum because they know what the answer would be….a resounding NO! They all lied to us in the election by telling us what we wanted to hear and then going in with their own agenda to push this thru no matter the cost! Useless, back stabbing council who has now bankrupted North Bay for the chosen few!

Surprise, surprise! Declining enrolment, surprise! Families are leaving for jobs that are not here, which means kids are leaving! There is NOTHING to keep families here - just look at all the empty stores! North Bay is a senior citizen town, not a bustling centre! School boards and council hemorrhaging money with no end in sight! Comedy show!

Who gives you the right to censor what I say if it doesn’t agree with you. If it’s said in a nice way, no swearing, no cursing! Big brother is watching!
