'It's time to move forward' — how council justified arena vote

I 100% disagree with the council on this totally stupid plan. North Bay is a city of seniors now and the young can’t wait to get away from here. Who is going to pay for this debacle, the taxpayers will, who are already paying thru the teeth. The $37,000,000.00 taxpayer share can be better spent on roads that can shake one’s teeth out of their mouth, the infrastructure is a disaster, we are short of housing for all walks of life, etc etc! The taxpayers are already paying for the homeless so they won’t be cold, hungry, etc, etc. This will add hundreds to already struggling and overburdened families, who may have to decide if they pay their taxes or feed and clothe their children, let alone the chosen few who will have the money to pay for hockey fees, equipment, etc. But wait, council may pass subsidizing families who don’t have that money, so more for them. I wonder which council member will have their name attached to this new ice palace!

I have hardly missed the postal workers as I was hardly getting mail other than flyers. The one good thing about the postal strike is that the only remaining bill that I would receive, I have now made paperless. I gave up sending parcels for Christmas because the costs were too high! The post office always strikes around Christmas, so this was no surprise! The only people I feel sorry for are the seniors who are not computer or internet savvy! Otherwise, they can remain on strike.

Another question, why can’t these hockey players use Memorial Gardens or aren’t they good enough! What’s another few hundred added onto this 70 year old taxes who can’t afford to move into a seniors apartment because there aren’t any and I can’t save up the money! But then the council doesn’t listen to their constituents nor do they care. Looking at leaving North Bay after over 60 years of living here and my granddaughter can’t wait to leave next year for university!

We are looking to move OUT of North Bay district so NO MOREof my hard earned money is wasted - so my more than $6,000.00 in taxes can be obtained from someone else! What a useless council, who broke all promises and continues to waste money. At least they will be known as the council that bankrupted the city. Way to go council.

There has been total lack of accountability and transparency by ALL levels of government, including city councillors, deans of schools, etc, for years and until the taxpayers stop paying the ridiculous taxes, the highest in Ontario, this will continue to happen . All taxpayers need to come together to fight for OUR rights, and not let the government run all over us!

The council is very good about guaranteeing things! Not one thing guaranteed has come true!

They are also way too scared to put this on a referendum because they know what the answer would be….a resounding NO! They all lied to us in the election by telling us what we wanted to hear and then going in with their own agenda to push this thru no matter the cost! Useless, back stabbing council who has now bankrupted North Bay for the chosen few!

Canada post is living in the early 1900s when it was the only thing going and they got the monopoly. They always strike around Christmas, but I think getting the taxpayers, who pay big dollars to keep this company going, have lost all trust in it. The internet, social messaging, emails, online bill paying and direct deposits, FaceTime, etc are or have replaced the slow mail of Canada post. About 20 years ago I would send 50 Christmas cards, but this is now 10. the price used to be on stamps, but no longer so prices can go up without the public knowing. I only send one parcel, and no more by Canada post, now courier. Goodbye Canada post, you’ve been dying a slow death.

I am another one of those people who switched to emails, e-cards, instead of sending cards. Bills come online and pay online! I send no more parcels because the costs were too high. Canada post is obsolete and to ask for 24% over 4 years is ridiculous when there are so many people who are unemployed! Haven’t even noticed they were on strike other than receiving no flyers! Agree with northernmama.

Time to throw mailbox out. No flyers from Canada Post! Wasn’t getting anything else anyways!

Addiction and mental health services will take money, building homes will take money, access to immigration services will take money, keeping the homeless warm and fed over the winter will take money. Young people are leaving, I.e. my granddaughter can’t wait to leave for university in a city OTHER than North Bay. Senior homes are being built to assist many seniors here, but are quickly bought/rented by out of town people as they are cheaper than down south. What does that leave here? Seniors stuck in homes trying to make ends meet paying higher and higher taxes so NB councillors can boast of what they did. This is much more complicated to what the mayors know, which is nothing. The federal, provincial, provincial, municipal governments caused this problem to save money and look where that got us. Now the mayors will fix this - what a farce.

I do not think Canada Post is worth the price we pay. They always strike around Christmas hoping the public will pressure the government to settle, but I think that strategy has failed because there is not much in the news or papers about this strike. More of a joke this time! Taxpayers are overburdened with all the increases. Canada Post is a white elephant that wants more money for an obsolete service. I used to send parcels and letters, but with the online ordering where it gets delivered extremely quick, ie Amazon, and emails, Snapchat, etc, direct deposits and paying online, who needs Canada Post. As a senior trying to live in my own home, I cannot afford to pay out more money!
I never used Shell in the first place. Big companies, monopolies steal! Go with the little guy
I agree
