Truly disappointing to see the opposition this site drew, and not at all surprised by the people who hid behind "we're losing greenspace" in a city with twice the national average, surrounded by forest and lakes. I'll concede there's some legitimate opposition here. However, by and large, judging from the comments I've seen discussed here and elsewhere online, for many this never had anything to do with the use of the greenspace. This city has a long history of deciding who gets to feel welcome here, and it's well past time we said so out loud.

It's more likely people will die of exposure without being provided tents, food and fuel. What even is the argument here? The city is working on a solution to the problem. Regardless of how you feel about that solution, it is the one that is being executed and it takes time. This entire letter reads like someone who cares less about what happens to the homeless in "direct view of numerous residents", and more like someone who is upset he has to look at them in the first place.

Go ahead and apply next time the job comes open, and please, do it for 50-80k. Better yet, run for mayor and do it for free. Easy enough to sit here and call someone a $250k/yr ribbon cutter without actually doing the job. You want to attract talented and dedicated people to put their whole effort into something, then pay them what they're worth.

Budget increase is fine, but I don't know if I can abide his choice of NFL team.

This is the most braindead comment I have seen here, and that is saying a lot. Please, wake up and get yourself disconnected from whatever propaganda you have been consuming, and maybe go outside and get some fresh air.

@dave3 ah so being well educated and having experience running a multinational company is a bad thing and elitist? What is a wallstreet "elite"? I'd rather have someone who knows what they're doing leading our country, than a career politician who's best work is in sloganeering. @medow - Being an economic advisor does not mean he enacted legislation, only that he gave his professional opinion. Do you happen to know how much of what he advised was enacted? Can you provide a source for your argument? Or did you see a post from Pierre Poilievre this week saying Carney is "Just like Justin" and left the rest of your ability to critically think at the door?

I see you have a limited understanding of how politics works in our country. Might be time to go do some homework. If Carney doesn't call an election by Oct 10, then by all means, screech away. Until then, you should wait and see what happens instead of eating up the slop talking points you're being served on Facebook and Instagram by the conservative "leader".

Also can you explain to me why you think that the city having a good credit rating means you should pay less taxes? You do understand that by keeping the debt burden low, and maintaining a good credit rating it just means the city likely has access to cheaper interest rates on its debt? This keeps the interest costs down meaning that you save already because the city is in a strong financial position. The city is not here to hand out tax revenue as "part of the pie", you pay taxes in order to access services like clean water, special events, infrastructure, roads, etc. Its part of the cost we all pay collectively as part of a community.

What do you think is the actual solution? I am genuinely curious.

What recognition? Having to hear the constant whining from NIMBYs who want council and the city to perform miracle of lowering taxes while opposing anything that might grow the cities revenue opportunities? It is rare to see anywhere in these comments or elsewhere on the internet people praising the job of their city council. I don't think anyone is doing this job for recognition or prestige. It sounds like miserable work, and they should be paid appropriately to do it, god knows I wouldn't want to.

Maybe if the public protests didn't involve driving across the country to the capital, setting up hot tubs and honking at 4 in the morning and occupying downtown Ottawa they would be allowed.

When you have a heart attack from being outraged about homeless people in the city, can I choose not to foot your health care bill? If you spent your life addicted to cigarettes, or booze, can I choose to have the funds that would go towards saving/sustaining your quality of life refunded to me and the 13M other Ontarians in the province? Or do we only complain about those you deem beneath you?

Because it is. Its based on sound science, you don't have to duck and cover.

@mark they never can. People like this say a bunch of uninformed inflammatory nonsense, and then when pressed for any actual evidence of it, they can't provide any. Gas prices are higher as a result of a breakdown of OPEC this past week, along with the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. O&G prices go up because suddenly (relatively speaking) 1/5th of the worlds supply of it cannot make it to market. Since demand for oil and gas is pretty inelastic (people need it regardless of price, at least in the short term) the countries around the world are struggling to source it, and are now trying to pay for 80% of the supply capacity that there was 3 months ago. Additionally, O&G prices impact pretty much everything since it factors into cost to transport goods, then of course the price of consumer goods goes up. If you want to blame someone, blame the administration south of us who decided to kick off a war in the middle east at the end of February.

So he cancelled something that was deeply unpopular, recognizing that it was a poor decision to enact that legislation, and you're still mad? Also why are you trying to make "Carney the Clown" a thing? Its as childish and annoying as when politicians do it to each other. Its not clever, it just makes you look like a sheep for following them.

@Foghorn Do you have a source for your claim that granite rock is not a safe storage base for radioactive material? I would like you to provide an article title rather than just telling people to go look it up on google scholar, especially when a quick 5 minute google search says otherwise. This same method of storage is already being used in Finland and Sweden. Additionally, there have been extensive studies done on the containers that will be used to truck the waste to the DGR to ensure that they can survive any catastrophic event. Nobody is content with just dumping spent rods on the side of the road. This isn't someone just digging a hole and throwing in waste. Nuclear energy has had almost 100 years of study, and we've had reactors online in the world since 1954. Stop trying to fear monger.
