That’s relatively simple to answer because it’s not a report card on the past council, but what needs to be paid to encourage a new council to come in. It had nothing to do with their past performance.

It’s amazing how much the way a story is written can shape the reaction, isn’t it?Just to be clear about what actually happened: we did not vote on the current council’s compensation. Our role was strictly to review data and recommend what the next council—elected in 2026—should be paid. Many people don’t seem to fully understand that important distinction. All we agreed on was this: the current council can decide for themselves what level of pay will attract strong candidates in the next election. That’s their debate, not ours. And even then, we advised only that moving compensation up to the LOWER end of the provincial average would be reasonable for a city our size. We didn’t hand out raises, we didn’t set salaries, and no one on this committee benefits from the recommendation. If we want high-quality people to run for office, the compensation can’t sit at the bottom of the list forever. That’s all we said—and the rest is just how the story was told.
