It's conservative thinkers like you who in time, would never be happy no matter who is in power. Forget the political stripe and avoid going the way of our southern neighbors who are spreading hate throughout the world.

It is a shame that the City has become so greedy to take what little amount the average person can earn in a situation such as this through their explanation of "Licensing," when we all know it is taxation and extreme at that!Surely limits and rules could be set by the City relating to income and size so that a little extra income people earn could be acceptable before it became subject to such heavy taxation.

Open your eyes and get with the growth of the city...and be thankful we are getting a new hospital...and stop complaining.

Ontario Regulation 239/02 (MMS), needs an amendment to include an accessible daily Publicly advertised warning upon any pot holes the City becomes aware of in the City. This way, drivers can check regularly, or report, pot holes the City must repair within their responsibilities. I feel the City is avoiding it's duties to protect the motoring public by relying on legislation that allows them to avoid their moral responsibilities, regardless of responsibility.

I have been in Orillia for over 30 years and I have not yet experienced a winter where this City has been efficient at clearing snow from its streets. It is obvious that saving costs are more important as little salt is used, snow ruts are left after initial plowing and there is obviously not enough employees to do a proper job. Proof of this is where Provincial roads join Orillia roads, you see bare pavement managed by the Province, but snow and rut covered by the City. Why are we paying such high taxes for such a second class service?

If you did your homework before asking your question you would see that the flashing lights were only active in certain hours. To change to the permanent limit of 40km, those flashing lights must be eliminated to avoid misunderstanding of the new law. So, your complaint is just sour grapes! Obey the law and we will all be safer.

Well said Pat. History is not only informative but is educational data for a basis to make better decisions. The history of a city should be preserved for the benefit of its future citizens and therefore is a major responsibility of the city itself. Over time, many volunteers assist with the preservation of its history through information and donations, but the city should not be risking losing the ability to keep such a valuable museum of information, through monetary pressure. I am aware that the history of the Masonic Order in Orillia since 1867, at the time when Orillia was established as a village, is recorded at OMAH. Many of the important business men of the years gone by were members contributing to the success and good of our city. Therefore, through the administration of the city I believe preserving our history is the responsibility of the city and should continue as in the past, otherwise we will end up with a more serious debate, akin to the statue in the park.

This type of enforcement is just the beginning because too many drivers speed. It was inevitable and will get worse unless we all obey the limits and eliminate the penalties issued for this. Then it will become too expensive to install useless cameras!By the way, a cash grab is the same as a tax...you pay without any option. This is not a tax grab, it's a fine for breaking the law..because you have been given a choice. Obey the limit, no fine! Simple.

Laws are not written to make money! They are put in place for the protection of everyone within a society where population is steadily increasing using our roadways; therefore legislating penalties if drivers won't obey those laws voluntarily to protect our children. Any driver of a vehicle that breaks the speed limit laws, intentional or not, deserves to pay the penalties. Our Mayor is absolutely correct in his comments. None of us are "privileged" when it comes to operating a vehicle on the road! Change driving bad habits or pay the consequences.Remember it is not about you, it is about protecting our kids in safety zones.

Sorry, I can't believe you were issued a ticket at 4km over the limit. Without a 10km buffer, as the Mayor has stated, less than that could open a lot of court challenges because of technical issues by cameras or speedometers in vehicles, and that is not want any City or community wants. Therefore it is only common sense to have that buffer so there is no excuse on the part of any driver from actually speeding.

Replace the Monument as it was and respectfully ignore the objectors unless they can establish a majority agreement ( 51%), from the public in a given amount of time. It is time we got back to majority rulings to properly govern most issues. No matter what, you will never please everyone.

I am afraid that City Council is losing site of why taxes were established....to pay City expenses such as garbage disposal. Now it seems we are paying increases on garbage disposal separately while taxes continue to increase as well. Likely because our Councillors dare not raise the taboo of taxes, so the solution is just add another tax for a so called different reason. A note to Councillors: Your not fooling anyone and it will end up costing you.

Canada Post should be privatized so they can charge for the service what customers demand. That way, they could negotiate with fairness as they would like to. They are not likely to criticize the Government for all the restrictions placed on their operation to keep the public happy.Government makes a mess of every business they try and run. If Canada Post is worth having....it is worth paying for!

It is very obvious that Orillia does not have an adequate number of employees to properly maintain the clearing of snow from its roads. All the talk about salt, sand, or previous costs means nothing when the city is facing a ridiculous lessening of adequate snow removal. You cannot staff for the lowest amount of snow that might be expected. The staff MUST be there to cover the very worst that can happen when the snow falls. People would adjust to higher taxes for better service. It will not likely happen because everyone knows, all councils consider raising taxes political suicide in getting re-elected. History shows constant cutbacks can do the same thing over time.

It seems obvious that when budget deliberations came to a 1% increase, Mr Lauer created an amendment to get extra spending on what is necessary, but a sneaky way to do it. Had the budget increase been higher, he may not have promoted the amending request. Today there isn't anyone who doesn't need more but if a councillor feels it is that important, they should include it in the negotiations and not leave it to a sneaky amendment at the end because the opportunity presents itself. The Mayor does not always make good decisions but in this case he is right to offset what was done by councillor Lauer.

The only reason they gained 24 seats was because the public did not want Justin back. So you go to the next best thing. Governments get voted out....hence, the opposition gains....try to understand that! When Justin quit and Carney took over, it was the final stretch and gained far more than your 24 seats.

Seems to me that your reasoning is just another excuse to relax while driving. Everyone must realize driving today is a full time job and requires constant total observation for the constant dangers out there. 40km limits are always well signed and there is no excuse for not seeing them in advance, period.
