All that can be said at this point is PLLLEEEAAASSSEEE do your research BEFORE you vote. Don't just walk in blind and vote incumbent without knowing facts. If you do proper research, you see what the parties are about, you see what they are offering and not offering, and you make an informed decision then great, vote for who YOU think is best. Don't just go by what left wing / right wing nuts are telling you, be informed. That's how a democracy is SUPPOSED to work. Once it's done, if your name wasn't on the ballot, don't complain. Just because you liked this candidate over that one and they lost / won, doesn't mean everyone thinks the same way. If we can just do that, things will be so much better off.
So, let's see if i got this right. He's stepping down, but staying on till a new leader is found, fair enough, but he prorogued Parliament until March 24 (2 and a half months ish) which means no party can call for an election until at least that date (assuming they don't extend it because they haven't found a leader to lead their sinking ship) which means the earliest date for an election would be what, sometime in May? so, that's enough time for Trump to get into power, and without parliament at full capacity we rely on who to counter all the threats from Trump and his team? then there is the Carbon tax increase which goes up April 1st which can't be contested until a new government is elected (again, at least May). So basically one last laugh and Canadian's expenses... Can't wait to see how badly this affects our economy over the next 4 - 6 months...
From what i've heard from attendees and vendors last year, it wasn't the idea of the event that is causing no one to want to participate, but the venue. Long line-ups with little to no shade, limited parking without a long walk, and little to nothing else to do. This should have been coordinated with one of the downtown street parties or moved to a more suitable location.who remembers chili fest down at the pavilion. At least it was under the tent, lots of shade, lots of parking with the mall right there and plenty of seating. So yeah, please don't go blaming the vendors for this one.
Carney has already said in multiple interviews that the carbon tax was implemented wrong. There shouldn't have been a consumer carbon tax (which came with rebates) instead it should have put even stiffer fines on industry and businesses. If this man knew ANYTHING about running a business, he would know that ALL businesses pass down expenses to clients... ALL businesses lol Even Chapman's ice cream who said they would hold price increases for a while due to tariffs will eventually pass on tariff costs to consumers if it's left on to long... And the best part, if it's all applied to industry (slash passed down to consumers) then as mentioned, no rebate checks, because there is "no consumer portion" anymore. The only thing Carney is really good at is finding creative ways to raise taxes. Any mention of Crime from him? nope... any mention about housing? nope... any mention on natural resources? ooo yeah, we need to put a cap and 20% reduction...
So the worst issue here isn't actually that it's being used, but that is HAS to be used in the first place. Our political system has become a joke of partisanship, when was the last time anyone saw legislation that passed by-partisan? And even if something get's passed, the courts have the power to throw it out based on the whims of a small minority of citizens that might be offended. Our society has become a joke, where anyone with a loud voice win's (or woke as they say) Even 20 years ago most of the country didn't know what the not-withstanding clause even was... People don't care of a law is good for society, they care if it impacts them in any way (taxes, freedoms and so forth). So, if you can prove to me that a proposed law is in the best interest of the nation as a whole, then have atter with the not-withstanding clause.
a LOT of question to raise... 1) Who's overdosing, regular users or casual users? 2) What is causing people to start using in the first place (mental health is an unfair blanket at this point) i know plenty of people that use recreationally that are well off, both mentally and financially. 3) Why is it cheaper, and more abundant to do/find drugs then just about anything else (if you can FIND something else to do in this city). Maybe it's time to start focusing some light on OTHER factors, we've devoted years to saying it's "mental health" that is causing the increase, and it JUST KEEPS INCREASING... So obviously all the efforts we are putting into mental health are not working, OR there are OTHER things contributing to these spikes... I'm not trying to diminish mental health as a cause, I'm sure there is a good % that this is the case, and it does deserve attention, but... what about the rest... Just saying...
i thought Doug Ford put a stop to these stupid bike lanes? that underpass is already trouble enough now you want to narrow it down to 1 lane and add bikes? (which i might add, i rarely EVER see riding around town anyways)? GIVE IT UP ON THE BIKE LANES ALREADY... you've made enough of a mess implementing them, so please, just stop. Just because you build them, doesn't mean people are magically going to start riding bikes.
hopefully this money will be "Added" to our road budget, and not funky accounting where they shuffle the money into pet projects like the downtown floating pool... We already have a report from the public works department that we need $30million a year extra over 10 years to get us to were we are "supposed" to be... and $10 million a year extra over the same period just to get us to "fair"... this is a good step. Let's put aside vanity projects, wasteful spending, and get it done! the city can apply for other funding pots for infrastructure as well right now, and we could close that 10 million gap at least.
The fact that this happens tells me that the Group Health Center has completely and utterly failed at its purpose... The whole point of the GHC was so that all family doctor's could be under 1 roof, with shared resources and expertise to help offset the cost of opening a private clinic (like this one). It was also supposed to be a 1 stop shop. Your name is on the list, we take care of everything, your family doctor leaves, we automatically assign you a new one if available. The fact that THIS is allowed to happen, on the hottest day of the year so far non the less, tells me that the board and managers at GHC should all be handed pink slips, and GHC should come under the direct control of the City. Even our city staff can run this place better then what's currently there... and that's saying something...And i for one, would rather see extra tax dollar going into a new City owned GHC, then other ventures the city has invested in...
I know it's been mentioned, but an 100% coverage option is poorly considered. you won't get 100% of the population to take this, so why have all the stock for nothing. I'd say have a stock pile of 25% at most, and if it becomes an issue, ramp up production accordingly. The thing is, COVID had a mortality rate of about 1 - 2%, so most of that was fear. H5N1 has a mortality rate of about 50%, and if it mutates to spread between humans, that would be the disaster... unlike COVID, there are vaccines available before it even gets started, so why not be ready. better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. And if you are an anti vaxxer, don't take it, that's fine. and if you contract it, i wish you well, but why are my tax dollars paying for you to be in the hospital, if your tax dollar can't be used to give the rest of us a fighting chance?
lol ok, really. Anyone who did not seeing this coming is completely blind... Even the negotiators working on the new deals TOLD the Finance Minister point blank to hold off on this until after the negotiations are done, because it would back fire... low and behold, it backfired. Now instead of potentially having a deal in the next few weeks, the negotiating teams will be starting almost from scratch against a brick wall.So seriously, do the Liberals within the Liberal party even talk to each other or KNOW what's going on? The only reason they want this tax so badly is because it's retroactive (another think that probably made matters much worse) and they see it as a way to rake in more tax dollars (which will get passed down to us users anyways obviously) to pay for i'm assuming all their failed policies? And yeah, let's not forget all the extra fee's we will be paying because of higher tariffs lol which knowing chester over there will be around 25 or 50%
I know this is a driver's fault, and so forth, but this honestly was one of the poorest decision's the city has made with regards to "traffic study". Elgin is a direct line from Wellington down to the mall, and it is well travelled (in both directions). And, as everyone who's stepped foot out of their house, everyone is in a hurry to get no-where, but especially in a hurry to get to Tim Horton's (Mall food court). This applies to all the side streets going from Wellington all the way down to / past bay. Having worked in the downtown core, i have seen countless incidents of people running lights, speeding and so forth down these streets (to and front work on many occasions). And with Albert already being a lawless street to start with, removing traffic signals on these streets was a disaster waiting to happen unfortunately. Unfortunately, someone is going to get killed during these "traffic studies".
I for one am in favor of keeping the USA flag up. We can't base all our opinions on the action of a small group of individuals who have no idea how their actions are affecting every day people across their country. The majority of American's still consider Canada an ally and friend, despite what this small group of people are peddling. Yes, there are going to be some individuals out there that follow the pied piper, but that shouldn't influence how we treat the rest of the citizens.
There are SOOO many things wrong with this article... 1) If we had been treated properly on his first trip to emerge the situation might not have escalated as badly. this is all to common a story coming out of emergency departments across the country, not just here. 2) Once he was discharged, the system should be setup so that he is automatically given a single point of contact while recovering, be it a temp family doctor / nurse practitioner, but something should be setup to help after, even if it's only for a few months till everything is resolved. 3) the MTO stating "the onus is on the driver to demonstrate they are cleared to drive, with supportive medical documentation from healthcare professionals." is an absolute joke given the the types of drivers we see out there on a daily basis. The MTO knows this type of situation comes up frequently and should have systems in place to help these individuals, not turn them away because "o you don't have a doctor"
Not to play devil's advocate here... but perhaps everyone needs to look at a bigger picture? Yes, we have slum lords in town, won't deny that, but we also have good land lords. BOTH have problems with squatters, and i hope i don't hurt anyone's feelings here, but you can rent an apartment for $100 / month, and you will STILL get squatters... The people that were breaking in, stealing copper and appliances and breaking windows, they won't pay for a place to live, period, no matter how cheap you make it. Until everyone starts realizing that SOME people just don't want any help, don't want affordable housing, don't want a job, don't want what ever, we won't be able to fix our problems. And this isn't a mental health issue thing, there are many individuals who are of sound mind and judgement that fit into this category of "i don't care"...
Just curious, but isnt this the same incident that was posted on the keeping the soo safe page where a few people mentioned seeing a car like that driving irratically downtown? We should get full facts before laying blame. The driver of the truck was still way out of line, but there is always more to the story then the last 20 seconds
Unfortunately, i find that news agencies have become the very thing they are saying they are trying to prevent. As they say, good news doesn't sell news papers, same goes for informative articles. News USED to be fully investigated, giving you all the information from every angle so that people knew exactly what was happening and potentially why. And readers are just as much to blame. No one wants to read a long article full of fact checks, alternate views, we'll researched facts and explanations that contradict what a majority of readers believe. And if they stop reading, there goes your source of income. So, lose facts, no explanations, and sensationalize titles are the norm in just about ever news room / news media... i miss the good ole days of real news...
wait... did i read that right? 85% of Algoma U's students are international?... not to sound rude or anything, but that sounds like a horrible business model... I mean great while it works, but we are now living in an era of anti-immigration, which we had to assume would eventually come up... Don't get me wrong, i have no issue with realistic immigration levels, but to base 85% of your organization off it... maybe i'm wrong?
