Crosswalks to be repainted to honour veterans

Adding up the numbers cited and it comes to as much as $25,500.00 for the 3 crosswalks which comes to over $5000.00 per year IF they last 5 yrs and $8500.00 if they only make it for 3 yrs. The concept of honouring Veterans is laudable but with taxes rising yearly and critical infrastructure needing repair and replacement in an ongoing basis I have to question if this is something we really need. A justification we have seen used in the past is to view the number as a percentage of the entire budget, be it municipal, provincial or federal which does make it seem less significant but when viewed in comparison to what many veterans are living on day to day you are more in touch with reality I think.Perhaps we could look for lower maintenance projects that could honour our Veterans and pass the savings on to organizations that are giving direct, needed assistance to these people who stood up for our nation!

ALTERNATIVE APPROVAL PROCESS is an end run on the democratic foundational principle of Secret Ballot as those using the option must identify themselves and it is Not a Yes or No ballot as would be presented for a referendum during an election. This process is only used by those opposed to the spending.I see this used when council very likely is fully aware that the spending would most likely be defeated if presented as a standard Yea or Nay ballot item during the scheduled civic election or through a special referendum. It is well known that many people are often not aware of the AAP being used and/or know but have concerns about how the entire process works and it being clear that anyone using the system is voting against the spending but not in a true Secret Ballot scenario. In my view an honest City Council would never use this process simply because it is not truly an open, honest way of getting balanced input from the electorate. Names of supporters noted for voting day!
