BEHIND THE SCENES: Homeless encampment consuming frustrated neighbourhood

The people in this neighborhood are at wits end and have had enough. The recent Chamber of Commerce poll indicates that 91% of their members are "fed up with the affect of crime associated with drugs and homelessness. To be a vibrant growing City we need businesses to flourish and residents to feel safe. Law & Order is only good if you fear the consequences and these homeless and drug users fear nothing as their actions are ignored while at that same time we enable them by supplying food, clothing, drugs & needles along with safe supervised places to use. Time for a different approach - time to take back our City. Instead of installing "bicycle safes" to keep them from being stolen drug users and homeless how about locking up the thieves.

This is a popular beach area with lots of pedestrian traffic without the safety of sidewalks. Turning around, following, and ramming goes beyond rage; it is insanity. It is surprising more people were not hurt.

The whole mess is illegal and an embarrassment to the City that is in a year of past proud celebrations. The only punishment council can impose on the Mayor is a 90 day suspension of wages. The CAO can be fired. The Mayor can do the honourable thing and resign. For the reputation and pride of North Bay I hope the last 2 options happen.

King is correct by saying “those who are addicted need help” - the problem is help should not include needles, meth., and injection sites. Recently backpacks with space blankets, socks, toiletries and hygiene products were given to the homeless. What was missing from the backpacks was a garbage bag and a sharp container in hope the homeless would not discard their garbage and dirty needles on our streets.

Mistakes have been made. #1 - Council did not support Councilor Lowery's call to have the Mayor removed from the Police Board. The NBPS then could have investigated. #2 - Council did not support Councilor Vresbosh's call for a forensic audit. #3 - Council did not support Councilors Inch and Vresbosh request for special meetings to deal with this fiasco. #4 - we elected Chirico, Horsfield, King, Mayne, Bain, Gardiner, and Mitchell who did not support these corrective measures. If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

When you buy food that is not served at the table no tip is required. What next - tips at the grocery store for food bought.

Nice to see how well all the well intended solutions put forward by every organization (there are plenty) are just not working. "Tough Love" should replace the "Bleeding Heart Liberal" ideals. We need restrictions imposed or no help given. If those who need help don't care why should we care to give.

The motion was read and Councilor Mitchell with her "vast"council experience and thorough knowledge of the procedural bylaw immediately objected followed by Bain. Does anybody believe this wasn't a set up.

The old saying "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink" was never more true. When the horse bites or kicks you it is time for a different approach. We should take a page from "Mother Nature's Book" that is time proven. When you stop feeding the pigeons in the park there are no more pigeons. When the lakes freeze over the ducks fly south. To some Mother Nature can be cruel but she is very effective at controlling populations. There are more examples but I am sure I made my point.

Clearly there is something wrong with a person that stabs someone (known or not) and as long as there are "no arrests" the public is in danger.

There will be no gain in beating the dead horse. However there are 9 live horses (mayor & 8 councilors) that need a beating next election.

Does "released" shortly mean after the 7hs wait in the ER because he might miss the Leaders Debate today.

"Most of these are very complex investigations that require diligence, they require a collaborative response from our investigative teams and all sorts of frontline officers,"Wow!!! It was a stolen bike worth maybe $200. The above police costs would be in the thousands. Cheaper for the police to buy the guy a new bike. If my neighbor takes my bike from my yard without my permission and I go in his yard to bring it home, who is the criminal??? Yea, the guy who took it.

Spending $5557.77 in breach of the Code of Conduct in my opinion is theft over $5000.00 whether you pay it back or not. Council (7members) support the Mayor from the beginning. I doubt if there will be consequences. Hopefully the OPP investigation will result in a more appropriate penalty. On the upside I doubt a re-run for Mayor would be successful. Hopefully the electoralette also remember the 7 that supported him.

Carney seems to be the frontrunner gaining more support from MPs daily. This is not surprising as Freeland basically through Trudeau under the bus triggering his demise al. la. "Brutus". Whoever is the leader, a change in the ruling party is required. The promises of "replacing the Carbon Tax" is just spin as there will be a carbon tax: just under a different name.

When King first ran for Council and loss part of his platform a forensic audit for the City. Now that he is part of the old boys club he doesn't want one. The recorded vote has pre-marked my ballot for the next election.

The Beach is right around the corner from King's business. He doesn't mind them in other people's back yard; just not his.

OK they have no toilets. They also have no food. We feed them at the Gathering Place and just take a look at the mess in the area. We need a 180 degree approach to dealing with homeless and addiction issues and it doesn't include "bleed heart liberal ideals".

King - "it's complicated". It's idiotic, insane, brutal or just plain stupid. The application for a "HUB" is a red herring giving area residents hope and easing their outrage for DNSSAB's poor choice. There are no guarantees and the wheels of Government turn slowly - just look at the development of the addiction center on Lakeshore Drive. That location choice will prove to be "complicated". As far as location for this cure-al HUB we should learn from past experiences. The former Ontario Mental Hospital on HWY 11 North didn't have these problems of interaction with the public.
