I'm not sure how you calculated your distances but Marathon to Aroland (for example) is only 50 km shorter than Thunder Bay to Aroland. And that is only if you use non-maintained industrial logging roads. If you stay on existing provincially maintained highways, Thunder Bay is much closer than Marathon.
Exactly right! Fire numbers hit on irregular and unpredictable cycles. 2006 was another extremely difficult year in NW Ontario with fires raging well into late September. It's impossible to predict how much resources are going to be required on an exact basis from year to year, So it's prudent to budget according to past averages and count on other provinces to help out when required (as Ontario provides resources to other provinces & USA when the are able).
