My feelings on the whole trump and a deal is MEH. He's been playing games trying to bully us and Mr. Carney has been using the time wisely. No deal is better than a bad deal - but this deal won't expire they'll just review it every year. trump is trying to get us to change the rules on dairy so they can dump their surplus into our market. Most of American food does not have the same quality as ours. trump was complaining that Europe won't take their dairy, their eggs or their meat - well duh Europe has a higher standard. The hamburg I bought two weeks ago was from Australia - very good quality. They have American hamburg at Walmart but at least once a year the meat seems to be on recall. trump will leave but no guarantees that we won't have to deal with the same nonsense in the coming years. Diversifying makes sense - we need to protect ourselves from trade temper tantrums.
I'm not saying Trudeau is perfect; but I don't like it when politicians keep saying 'everything is broken'. We have survived a pandemic, we had a large influx of newcomers and we don't have enough housing. We need newcomers to stimulate economy. Perhaps we are short term victims of our own successes. As a member country of the human race we are facing an extinction event if we can't successfully fight global warming - the fight will cost money. Sticking our heads in the sand and ignoring the problem won't fix it. We need a government to take immediate and positive actions and changes. Bravo for individual communities who have moved their residents away from flood plains and made other changes to combat the effects of climate change. We need to come together not battle one another while the planet dies around us. Please elect people willing to work cooperatively. Together we are stronger.
We need better health care - Dougie Ford has given us more gambling (and more addicted gamblers and families are suffering from that) and now he wants every one to get more alcohol. Why isn't he making schools better, long term care homes better, and health care better? Why is promoting unhealthy habits. He has allowed so many gambling companies come in to Ontario - Ontario is open for business - alcohol and gambling - good for Ontario good for families - not so much.
CBC is a national entity - what I enjoy about CBC is that they are public media so they present both sides equally - I might not like the 'other party to the one I vote for' getting air time - but I can't deny that all parties should get equal time. CBC has shows like "Cross Country Check Up' which features callers from across Canada and I find that I feel more united with others in the country when I realize no matter what party they support the majority of the people are Canadians first and political affiliations second. The show demonstrates we all have more in common that we have in differences. We need CBC to keep us united. I like that CBC will bring us news from around the world - it doesn't tell us what to think about the news it just reports the facts. When they make a mistake they admit to it and correct the errors so we hear the truth. I trust CBC and I trust Bay Today. CBC keeps me connected to other Canadians and Bay Today connects me to my community.
Well said - we need immigrants. Sometimes when refugees arrive we need to invest in them for a couple of years but then they become tax payers and they help grow the economy and the country. Immigrants are people arrive in a more planned method. They usually have some supports in place. They become tax payers and help grow the economy. Canadians are having smaller families than in the past so the population is shrinking. That's bad and causes inflation. Immigrants and refugees stimulate the economy and grow the population. Refugees often arrive with large families but that is because sometimes many of the children had lost their parents to war and this is the family the took them in (they could have been aunts, uncles, grandparents or complete strangers but they became a family. Let's be honest - Unless your ancestors were First Nations they were immigrants and refugees and you're the descendants of immigrants and refugees.
In response to KevinSoo - the concept of CERB was really good but there were mistakes in the roll out. We won't be waiting 100 years for the next pandemic (maybe 10 years) but the CERB was a good way to make sure people could get groceries and pay some rent - the errors that happened this time can be avoided. This was the first pandemic where governments gave any help to the citizens. Because of the help given the economy bounced back faster.
If those 'new' doctors are ones that are replacing doctors who had died, retired or left the province there's no increase in number of doctors. Support student doctors through medical school forgive their student loan debt each year they work in under-serviced areas (not GTA) or work as family doctors anywhere in province (including GTA). It's an investment in the future of our grandchildren and makes more sense than spending money to build a tunnel so more cars can be on the roads. Rapid transit is the way of the future - not more highways.
Ford just renames the organizations that manages services and then adds another layer of management while under funding the actual services. His focus seems to be alcohol and gambling. I see little hope for any improvements under the current government. We have less services and more homeless people and he funds big projects for his cronies. Ford has to go.
Ford was not, in my opinion, should never have been elected. His performance on city council in Toronto was less than stellar. Not every thing he has done as premier had a good smell to it. Why he was reelected - who knows? It didn't make sense that trump was reelected either - but here we are. Ford has done nothing but bring Ontario down. Time for a change.
Instead of wasting money on old fashioned highways why doesn't Ford bring us into the new century with a rapid transit system. All the modern countries are developing amazing rapid transit. We are going back to highways and gas guzzlers. With rapid transit you can relax on your trip to and from work - read a book, listen to music and the trip would be smoother and faster. We need people looking to the future. Waste money on highways that will only rip up in twenty years and the rapid transit will cost more to build in twenty years. Please give us politicians to bring us to the future.
Any homelessness in Canadian society must be dealt with as it's society's failure as a whole. I don't think it's a lack of compassion, but rather a lack of a viable long term plan to deal with the situation. It is not unique to our community. Other countries and other communities have developed successful programs. We need to fund such programs. What has worked successfully in other places was to provide proper shelter not emergency shelter to prevent death from the weather. A small apartment where you can lock the door and feel safe. The next step is to get people proper clothing, good food, services in the building to provide meals to those unable to cook for themselves for whatever reasons. Social services, addiction services, services to meet the current needs of the individual. As those needs are met, then the people can be encouraged to volunteer to help others or volunteer in the community. In time many will return to work and become tax paying citizens.
In answer to Gimmeabrak - the current municipal and provincial governments have done little to improve housing. The fact is a large part of the population is a few pay cheques away from being homeless. Landlords continue to rake in record rents. You can invest in corporations who control apartment buildings across Canada that do little but evict the people paying cheap rent and raise the rents for the new people and the government turns their head so they don't have to see this results. There is no logic to local and provincial governments handling of things. The federal government has programs to increase housing but Mr. Poilievre has ordered his fellow members of the federal parliament to not apply to get these projects in their ridings as he likes complaining about the lack of housing in Parliament. He has since that this kind of behaviour was rewarded in the USA so is employing same tactics in Canada.
What I remember is it has to do with the fact if it remained as a church then there wouldn't be a problem doing upgrades, but to convert it to the home it suddenly became a problem to the conservation authority. I believe the owner at that point said he should call it the church of common sense so he could avoid all the hassles they are giving him.
I used to buy gift cards - now I just send an e-transfer to the parents and they give the money to the kids so they can buy stuff for their online games. We eliminated the middle man.
Knowing how the ford government operates my first thought was maybe he has friends who want to build a for-profit jail so he has to create a need for this project because otherwise he might waste the tax payers money on health care.
As a disabled person I find that paying my rent by e-transfer when my pensions come in is very handy. Logically, if rent cheques aren't being picked up then you hold that money in your account until you do get it paid so you aren't in arrears. As a tenant you are responsible to get your payment to the landlord. I do believe Nipissing Housing's office is at city hall and you could drop your check off there quite easily. Before e-transfer we used to give housing 12 post-dated cheques so we didn't have to travel to their office every month. It was quite convenient.
