While operating the Sleeman center with no deficit may be nice, remember that other city recreation venues are also running at a loss, technically. Take for example our parks. We are not charged entrance fees to use a park, yet the city maintains it at a cost. The point is that many recreational venues cost money but they benefit all who use them. Is the Sleeman center or the River Run center any different from parks in that the cost to operate them must come from the city budget?
The cost to drivers of this voluntary taxation can easily be eliminated by driving below the speed limit. Speed limit signs are, unfortunately, perceive as minimum speed. Plan ahead, leave earlier and slow down.
The mayor is on track to produce a reasonable bylaw which will, at the very least, make it an offence for graffiti to grace our walls. But he needs to have a word with staff. The statement by the CAO that the city is not obligated to clean up graffiti is not just silly, it is infuriating!
