Frustrated seniors say club is 'squeezing' pickleball court time

Ice time, ball diamond, soccer pitches, basketball and volleyball gym time, pool time….all public facilities where user groups book times. City makes available public hours, but they rely on user groups to book to ensure they have income for maintenance and repairs. Why should this be different?

I have read the letters and this article, and I don’t know if I have missed a significant point, but how is this different than any other facility? I understand that it is a non-secured “open” facility, but Ball diamonds are booked by slo-pitch and minor ball, soccer pitches are booked by Orillia Minor Soccer, rinks by Minor hockey, Hawks etc. Pickleball seems to be a growing sport, which makes sense that they would organize leagues and book courts. Courts will need to be maintained and repaired - revenue will need to be generated. Respectfully, what am I missing?

There can be the best of both worlds. Have an at large election, and then assign councillors to represent each ward. One of the complaints about at large was that candidates were not able to communicate their message quickly, clearly and economically. Advancement in tech has done away with those concerns. As someone living in a ward that typically only has a handful of candidates, it would be nice to have input on candidates that are more qualified. One election after ward system came into effect there was three options to choose from, and two were not strong candidates. Thank you Councillor Lauer for proposing this issue be addressed.

Let’s make it a sea of red and white and make some noise! Pack Rotary on Saturday and help keep the energy up

Great game boys! One game at a time. The rink was crazy last night and it was great to have that energy back in Orillia hockey! Keep working hard and results will follow. Congrats to Jordan Fuller who was awarded Ontario Hockey Association Player of the Year last night too!

Great attitude by the captain! He’s right - Game 2 is in the books, nothing you can do but move on. Still lots of hockey to be played. This team is playing with heart and passion. Keep it going boys, we’re with you!

Have to best of both worlds. Elect at large and assign councillors to a ward after elected. There was a year when my ward only had three candidates and another had over ten to choose from. Everyone should have input on who is making decisions affecting the city as a whole.

“We will play as hard as we can every night. If you support us, we’ll make sure we give you something worth cheering for.”…..these guys don’t stop. The skate, they dig, they fight for the puck, they don’t back down…..and they deserve our support. Orillia has a huge hockey history, and these guys definitely have the talent to add to it. Let’s support them.

This team is 27-3-1. Orillia, you’re missing out if you haven’t taken in a game this year. Saturday is sure to be a tilt and having the home crowd energy can make a difference! Let’s go make some noise!

Great heart and determination - never giving up and coming from behind to win in OT in Alliston’s rink. Memories for life boys! Just going to add - it was Josh Presley that had the short handed goal - and a beauty at that!

And parking. Designated overflow parking is at Rotary Place…..which has parking challenges of its own, especially during winter.

Anyone who enjoys hometown hockey would love this team. They play with heart and even when they get down, they don’t give up, as proven by Sunday’s win. If they play their game they can truly challenge for the championship this year. It’s that time of year to Believe…

Such a great article Tyler! I think you’ve captured the heart and resiliency this team has. It’s bound to be a great series, and Orillia seems to have the right mentality going in! That rink better be LOUD on Saturday! #godogs!

They are resilient and determined. Still lots of hockey to go - Just play your game and continue to believe. It has served you well before, don’t stop now.

After the excitement of last year, having the rink full of supporters, and a buzz about town, hopefully everyone who came out of the woodwork when the winning was happening, continues to support.
Second in division and third overall is impressive. Hockey fans are missing out this season if you haven’t been. A couple of highly competitive games coming up, it would be great to see the arena packed for the home side.
