This issue is not unique to McIvor Court but runs rampant throughout the DSSAB controlled properties. Underfunding and poor management protocols are at the root but who is policing the running of these facilities? I would suggest the DSSAB board is willingly ignorant of what is going on in the facilities they claim to be responsible for.
Nothing criminal?! That is straight up criminal negligence causing bodily harm. Especially since she left a child there to bleed out, what if she had more serious wounds and died?!I can't believe the police just let this lie. Terrible.
Maybe the city should do a better job of scrutinizing these companies that buy our heritage buildings and place more strict stipulations on the conditions of those sales. Pretty soon we will have an abundance of historical building rotting, collapsing and partially reconstructed because of the short sited money grabbers. At this stage, it seems as though the city would sadly have been better off demolishing these old buildings for cheaper redevelopment instead of taking the quick fix.
The lack of basic information in your articles is getting very frustrating.I have no stake in this story but I am sure that many who took the time to read it as I have would like to know the answer to the glaring question of why the store is closing. I mean there isn't even a statement like, "When asked why the store was shuttered, St. Joseph Care Group declined to answer."Maybe its a lack of real journalistic education, who knows, but does anyone remember the 5 W's? What, Why, When, Where and Who... ringing any bells?
No city resembles what it was 30 or 70 years ago...not one. There is also the big difference between your access to information now versus 30 or 70 years ago and how much crime was going on that you didn't know about or care to know about since you were children and didn't pay attention to that sort of stuff.Additionally, I am genuinely curious how building more prisons would assist the police in catching an individual that is at large. We've been building prisons for almost as long as there has been crime and there is still crime. Neither of these comments has anything to do with this story and people have been complaining about the sate of their city's decay since Fred Flintstone... be the difference.
Typical COTB logic. Leave it sunk in the river to rot, spend nearly a million dollars to rescue it then leave it to rot on land until we decide to sink it or "recycle" it. Love what you guys do with our tax dollars... How is it nobody is facing a consequence for the decisions that led to this major disaster?
So... the day after a press release stating that inflation rates dropped last month and are expected to hold relatively steady we get this one stating that electricity rates are going up due to inflation. Sounds about right. Gas prices never go up right before long weekends either, right... The people in control of our economy really do treat us like we are stupid and it is getting old.
Could a brief paragraph on why the weekend news is affected while the weekday news is not, have been included in this article? Maybe a brief mention of what portion of an Act instilled 3 years ago is now suddenly affecting news coverage?I remember when I was a kid and there was a news program called W5 and how I thought it was a dumb name until I found out that it was based on a basic journalistic principle... or did I imagine that?
"Other people in other communities don't want it in their backyard so they put it here where we don't want it...in our backyard so it's bad."Getting tired of these people that talk about contributing to the community but only do so in terms that work for them.Somehow it's better to have empty lots surrounded by empty buildings than to help people find shelter then to try and follow through on positive solutions.
So people like Mr. Powlowski seem to think that this is some sort of concentration camp and that all the city's homeless are going to be transported to this new location. You are dead wrong. There are many court cases that prove that unless there is suitable alternatives, these homeless encampments can not be forcibly moved due to human rights issues. You can not like that all you want but its the facts. Double down on that with the planning stages already stating that there will not be enough temporary housing for all homeless and you have a recipe for simply building another homeless encampment while the other that are already there remain. Pick a spot where there are already homeless people living and build it there. This whole process is loony tunes and for people already living near these encampments this project should be seen as a blessing compared to what they are experiencing now. Marcus...your disconnect is showing.
Not about getting more money but getting rid of the free parking for 20 minutes and adopting the HIGHER rates instead of the lower ones for all parking.. Hard to not take that comment as an insult.
What is the purpose of this story? The article wasn't timely enough to notify anyone and there is literally no information given in this so called "Update". I don't understand the push on these stories that simply state, "stuff happened." I look forward to tomorrow's article, "Police doing police stuff somewhere, sometime. Details to come... perhaps."
How do they know they will not have staffing issues in October?! What a racket. Just tell us you are closing a location to minimize your losses during slow business or, if it truly is a shortage, have you thought of paying more to attract employees?!
Sure, why have a single representative for a ward when you can divide it among two people? Everybody knows how efficient a team is with two coaches or a business with two bosses. Does this committee have a directive in this process at all or are they just making stuff up. If we had 4 Ward councilors, 2 At large and the mayor we could even afford to pay these folks to represent our city as a full time position... imagine that!I would like to have our city council and administration make a New Year's resolution to not do general non-directed consultations with our tax dollars anymore so we can avoid pointless costs and wastes of time.Is the goal here to make things more streamlined? Cost effective? Create faster decision making? Better represent the citizens? To delete two positions and appease everyone so as to not make waves or work for anyone? It's great that we consider this issue but the methods, timing and lack of direction on this initiative has reached a painful status.
Mr. Gale fails to mention the fact that Thunder Bay has up to 10 times the amount of councilors per capita as cities with populations into the millions and we also have some of the highest paid managers in the country as well.I happen to think we should double the wages of our councilors but I feel that we should do that by axing half of them. Toronto has a councilor for roughly every 130 000 people, Vancouver is one per 60 000 and Montreal and Regina are closest to us with one for every 25 000. Just to apple to apple it we have one councilor for every 9000 people. As it stands we have more representation than almost any other city in the country and they are generally less effective, taking multiple votes to make decisions, consultations on every issue and spend more time restructuring and ignoring recommendations than researching the issues they are voting on.It should definitely be a full time gig, but you get what you pay for or in our case you get part of what you pay for.
